I don't know a single chess players who genuinely seems smart. Maybe Carlsen and Caruana but I think they are just above like 130IQ which is not that high (I don't really believe in IQ btw). Intelligence is a combination of many things and top players spend too much time on chess alone to develop all the attributes of an actually smart person. You are twisting what he said to fit a narrative. The performance of Gukesh this year was exceptional. If you look at his performances over the past 5 yeats, this year was the beat so far. So you can't conclude based on the few tournaments that this is now his usual strength of play. If he performance likes this for 2 to 3 years, then myabe you can say this is now his normal strength.

And from many accounts including Hikaru, Nepo did the same for Gukesh in candidates. In fact, according to many including Hikaru, Nepo accused Hikaru as well and who knows who else. The thing is - as I think Svidler or somebody has said - Ding's prep didn't seem all that deep in the last world championship. Some novelties but maybe not that rigorous. And if he is prepping with the same team and approaching things the same way, maybe it's not like the way people used to prepare. In short, maybe WC games aren't going to be won in the opening nowadays.

completely disagree. I don't see how a stable champion would be the best for chess. Just gets kinda stale tbh. Unpredictability makes things interesting.

If anything, a world champion who doesn't want to defend his title is fake and isn't worthy of the title. It shows he is scared of the new generation.
