Jaguar XJ6 Series 1 Launch 1968
Gordon Wilkins reports on the release of the Jaguar XJ6 Series 1. Gordon talks to Sir William Lyons, the founder of Jaguar, about the new design and his hopes for the future of the company. To see how the new car fares on the road, Michael Frostwick takes the XJ6 for a test drive on the Le Mans circuit. Clip taken from Wheelbase, originally broadcast on BBC Two, 27 September, 1968.

My wife had a Mk1 xj Daimler soveriegn and he was right about those low profile radial tyres, they were a life saving game changer. I had a Rover 3.5 coupe on it's original cross plys and it would go into a 4 wheel drift on a wet roundabout that was on my regular route from work, I fitted a set of those dunlop XJ white band radial tyres which not only made it drive as though it was on rails even on said roundabout but looked beautiful.it is a great shame the way Jaguar has been turned into a laughing stock.
Jaguar have always been at the forefront of vehicle evolution, time will tell if the new Jaguar direction will continue that.
Regency Red??
Correct
What happened to Jaguar over the decades? Growing up in the late 80s and 90s they were popular. Nowadays in the states you barely see any.
Not enough people bought the cars. Over the last 25 years they’ve tried to compete with the Germans firstly with X & S Types then E & F range and failed primarily due to poor product planning. The cars were good but it took the until 2016 to release an SUV, 14 years after the Porsche Cayenne when a re-bodied Range Rover was a simple option. It also took until 2023 to introduce a hybrid when Land Rover had hybrids from 2013 and the technology was available within in the group.
Good classic ! Good 2025 Year for All !!!(Happy 2025 Everyone !!!) HoHoHo!!! 🎉
Indeed!
Well, I am an old man, but I have to say that Jaguar XJ6 was and still is my favourite car of all times. Maybe, I don´t why but it´s truth. You can trust me. That´s all.
It’s one of the greats
What a fantastic historical segment from what I've learnt to appreciate is a brand that's staked a pivotal, significant and profound place in motoring history ! Truely one of the touchstones.
Hopefully what comes next makes them even more significant going into the future.
A nice video about Jaguar to wash out the absolute puke the company has spouted out of late!
The XJ was revolutionary for its time
Why oh why cant Jaguar build cars like this anymore? The reason is the WOKE and EU morons have taken over. Shame. Another great British car gone.
I can't understand how few people are standing up to this woke rubbish.
The XJ was revolutionary for its time
The reason I love Jags, what a beautiful car.
Stunning cars
The worst of it is, the XK, XJ, XJS and F-Type continued the history of magnificence. Engineering and stylistically, Jaguar was and still is brilliant. It’s management. With the exception of a brief respite from ‘86 (end of the BL era) to probably about ‘15 or ‘19, Jaguar had real hope. Its independence, the Ford era and the Ian Callum era really saw the top models of Jaguar return to form. Yes the X-Type, lower variant S-Type, XE and XF models were a misstep, and the whole SUV thing, while necessary, is depressing. But in terms of XJ? XJS? XK? F-Type? Project 7? Project 8? Anything with the Supercharged V8? The XJ220? All brilliant designs, badly managed. And now? Well let’s reserve judgement for an actual production model…but, if history is anything to go by….a brilliant designed ruined by bad management.
Jaguar is faced with a big problem. The current range was not profitable and the customer base is ageing.
What a glorious brand Jaguar was! What shame, cause bad marketing strategy the iconic brand is going down.
Not sure if marketing is to blame, sure the new ad was strange but the real issue has been poor product planning. They’ve tried to compete with the Germans firstly with X & S Types then E & F range and failed. The cars were good but it took the until 2016 to release an SUV, 14 years after the Porsche Cayenne when a re-bodied Range Rover was a simple option. It also took until 2023 to introduce a hybrid when Land Rover had hybrids from 2013 and the technology was available within in the group. Now they need to try a radical approach.
Get your hands on a practical descendant.. The relatively modern x350 before they go through the roof
Great cars the X350!
i like royal made England 🤴🤴🇬🇧🇬🇧🚗🚗
As English as tea and biscuits
Aloominum😂
Need to speak American
For some of us of a certain age these "Jags" will always be the real deal. Where did it all go so wrong. Todays Jags just look like any other Euro box and to think they will be removing the " cat badge" whoever thought that would be a good idea. Goodbye Jaguar it was nice knowing you.
Electrification is standardising everything. Historically you would buy a car because of the way it is engineered. A 911 Porsche for the flat six, a BMW the pure driving machine, a Merc for the engineering, a Jag for grace, space and pace. Why buy a Porsche Taycan over a KIA EV6 GT when the only thing different is a badge and an interior? Over the last 25 years Jaguar tried to compete with the Germans and failed. JLR is hugely profitable, banking £1.1 billion in the first half alone driven only through the Land Rover brand, this is not a struggling company. The options for the Jaguar brand were to either fold or start again. Time will tell if this is the end or a new beginning.
@@LouGuthryMotors Funnily enough, only this morning, I was watching a Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV following a Porsche, possibly Panamera, along the road and thought the Hyundai actually looked better and more like a Porsche at the back!
This vid is PRICELESS!
Love the old footage
What was the story behind the Commodore wheel falling off? Snapped studs? Or wheel nuts not torqued down properly and fell off?
No idea, footage and information on this race is very rare.
@LouGuthryMotors fair enough, yeah I rewinded the video to try and see but they didn't catch it on camera when it fell off lol not a very common thing to happen.
@LouGuthryMotors thanks for the upload though was fun to watch love my old Commodores and I've spent countless hours racing that track on Gran Turismo on Playstation over the years so it was so unusual to see a VK on that track. I wished GT7 added some Aussie cars back to the Gran Turismo series, atleast we've got Bathurst though.
I’ve been lucky enough to own two series 1 XJs, truly brilliant and beautiful cars.
We had a S1 Daimler Double 6 in our private collection for a while. Rare, wonderful cars.
ACCESORIES AND ALL ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS FOR CAR FROM LUCAS ''THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS''
Hahaha
Series 1 XJ6, still a looker from any angle, and the last to come from the great man himself. He got it spot on.
💯
The great man himself!
Yep
Time when Jaguar made real cars.... 🤦🤦🤦 R. I. P. , Jaguar (September 4, 1922- December 3, 2024) 😢😢😢🤦🤦🤦
The XJ was revolutionary for its time
And Mercedes and BMW and Saab and Volvo and Citroen…all very sad!
@@briannumme9337 In a way I'm happy that Saab is gone, so they will never be subjected to the same abuse Jaguar has suffered at the hands of the woke globalist clowns. Every Saab you see on the road was built in a time when the world was normal and good.
@@LouGuthryMotors It's true! 👏👏👏😍😍😍
Today: a bunch of gays….destroying a myth
Jaguar today - the lunatics have taken over the asylum
Definitely moving in a new direction
Utter Woke Junk. Lyons would be turning in his grave....
Wonderful
Great to see the old footage
I had a Series one in 1982/83 , 4.2 Auto, Grace, Pace & Space, absolutely lovely car, only downside was fuel consumption, I still regret letting it go..
Yes fuel was not really a consideration, they make excellent classic weekenders today.
My late father bought one second hand in 1977. 1972, Series 1, 4.2 Auto in sable brown. Gorgeous thing, and at a time when petrol was dirt cheap, so the fuel economy wasn't an issue. It was the pinnacle of William Lyons' vision, and in V12 form, the best car money could buy.
this host is great. better than now.
Old fashioned hosts are the best,
Look where Jag is now .... Nothing !!!!
Times have changed, that’s for sure.
Thankyou LGM for the comment .... As I'm not British anymore, I hope you don't mind me saying that that is the story of British Industry .... Your Bentleys/Royce's and I think even Aston Martins are owned by the Germans and now you want to rejoin the EU .... Germany won't have it!!!!
We are Australian
IMO the 1968 XJ6 has styling that is as close to perfect as a 4 door sedan can be.
Agree, especially the early SWB saloons
Quote: "Enough room to fit a V8 or V12 engine if someone was so minded", well that's just what they did in 1971 with that silky smooth 5.3 litre V12 making the XJ6 into a fabulous machine.
And the fastest full 4 seat saloon available in the world at the time
I had a 96 XJ6 with 40 k miles on it. Gorgeous from every angle, but the driving characteristics were nothing special. w126 I had felt like a much more solid car in comparison. Same for the 70s cars I assume and 80s XJ and W Mercs.
3.2 litre X300s cars can be underwhelming. 4litre cars and supercharged cars have a lot more oomph
@@LouGuthryMotors mine was 4.0 na. Motor was fine. The ride was very fragile it seemed. Brakes were just ok. Car didn’t feel solid like a w126 I also had at the time.
Driving characteristics nothing special lmao, theyre the finest handling most agile sports saloon cars in the world, from this series one onwards up to final x351.they simply cant be beaten.magnificent luxury cars.
@ W126s are one of the best engineered cars of all time.
1 comment ! THIS is why l love You tube ! I was priviledged to own a very early 4.2 Auto in 1976 . It really had fantastic performance and road holding . Proof ? I drove the Shaldon to Torquay road to work . One very rainy day l was driving out of Torquay to Shaldon when a mini cooper "s" appeared in my rear view mirror. We approached the notorious series of "S" bends , very tight "S" bends ! Truthfully , as l gently drove through those bends , the Cooper "S " with it's wide wheels gradually disappeared in my rear view mirror. A few days later Gerry , popped into our pub, he was the Cooper"S" driver . Je could not believe l was "gently " driving through those "S" bends ! For me , that encapsulates the greatness of his car. I had a LWB series 2 later and it was no longer the car it once was . Really enjoyed this . Thankyou
Thanks for sharing. Early SWB cars with the IRS were remarkable for their time.
XJ 6: not one bad angle! It must be one of the best proportioned saloons of all times.
Agree and they are aging very well too.
Great to see a good documentary about Jaguar cars~!
Glad you liked it!
It wasn't the end LOL
No it was not
Jaguar should go and BEG Ian to come and save them. Man, how far they’ve fallen…
The cars that Ian designed were great but not enough people bought them.
My grandad had one of these. This is the reason I’m on my fourth jag, beautiful cars.
It does get passed down from generation to generation.
Is it a Japanese import?
No, the car is Australian delivered.
Incredible
Very rare example with excellent provenance.
This is brilliant, thank you. I have been out there in Timmins for Jaguar, back in the day...
Glad you enjoyed it
Best
Series 2s are a great car
How much is this one
This one has been sold.
However, what price would be approximately for such condition vehicles, in future
Beautiful
Thank you
Nice one Mr Guthrie, i know ive been unkind about the S Typs before. But i really like that one.
These last of the series with the mesh grille, BBS alloys and S-Type R air dam are the best.
Styling wise it reminded one of the 1991-1996 Mazda 929 but the Jag in terms of design dates back way further than that.
The design has its origins dating back to the 60s and the series 1
Only the inline six cylinder engine is worth owning. 4.0 or 4.2 L. What it does need is a six or eight speed automatic transmission.
Even a 4 speed makes a big difference
Thats my daily driver- and it is a great car. I have had good luck with maintenance- but I still tell people its like marrying a stripper- you know how it will turn out- but you cant help yourself.
Hahahaha
