These are just some home-made videos of me playing and singing solo with an acoustic guitar. I perform lots of covers and traditional songs and have a few originals.
Norwegian Wood (The Beatles) with Jack on Lead Guitar
A classic Beatles tunes that my son Jack and I like to jam out on. Jack is playing his amazing Epiphone Sheraton Pro II, and I am playing my Yamaha FG830. Thanks to anyone who checks it out or leaves a comment--Tim.

Do Right By Your Woman (Bad Company)

One of many great old songs by Paul Rodgers and Bad Company. I have kind of played this for years and years, so I figured I should document my version of it. God bless Paul Rodgers, right? What a singer, musician, and band leader, and he is STILL going strong and sounding incredible in 2025.

A great old tune by Mr. Steven Forbert, an excellent songwriter and musician and very cool person.
Angel From Montgomery (John Prine)

Here is a classic tune from John Prine, made famous by Bonnie Raitt and covered by many artists over the decades. I have been working on this track with a friend, so I figured I would upload a take of it. Thanks Tim.
It Ain't Me Babe (Bob Dylan)

Here is a classic Dylan tune that's been covered by lots of people over the years. I got it in my head, and I had to get it out. So here you go, for better or worse Tim
You're Gonna Quit Me, Baby (Blind Blake)

This is an old blues tune from Blind Blake. I heard Bob Dylan do it years ago, and I thought it was a cool song. It's tough to beat a good old blues tune Tim.
Jam in D (Epiphone Sheraton Pro II)

A little jam on my son's new Epiphone semi-hollow body, with a delay effect. Something a bit different for me.
Midnight on the Stormy Deep

A classic bluegrass ballad from Mr. Bill Monroe. I can never get enough of old tunes like this one, TBH. I actually forgot one verse. Sorry to any of the purists out there. It just addresses how the girl marries someone else, but she still thinks about him in moments of weakness. And our protagonist isn't having any of that, as evidenced in the last two verses. Thanks Tim.
Angry Young Man (Steve Earle)

A great song from Mr. Earle's stupendous album "Exit 0," which was an extensive influence on teenage me to play guitar and try to sing. Thanks Tim.
Not Fade Away on a Martin DR-2
Переглядів 139Місяць тому
This is my old Martin that I played for over 20 years. It needs frets and strings and binding work, but it still somehow sounds pretty decent. This is a cover of the Buddy Holly Classic, turned into a wild jam vehicle by the Grateful Dead. Thanks Tim.
I've Been All Around This World (Traditional)
Переглядів 188Місяць тому
First recorded by Grandpa Jones in 1946, this great traditional outlaw song has been performed in many ways by a bevy of different artists. I learned it from Jerry Garcia's version. It has always been a fun tune to do Tim.
Cactus Flower (Mapache)

This is a cover of a great tune by this fantastic duo called Mapache. Please check out their music and support them live if possible. This is a redo of a version I recorded on my phone and posted here. Thanks and Merry Christmas Tim.
Warm-Up Jam in Em #1

This is my typical warm-up music for these old hands of mine sometimes.
Loretta (Townes Van Zandt)
Переглядів 329Місяць тому
Townes Van Zandt wrote around 100 songs in his life, and they were all pretty significant. There just wasn't a more poetic songwriter than Townes, and this particular tune certainly highlights that.
Red-Haired Boy (Fiddle Tune)

This is an ancient fiddle tune, also sometimes called "Little Beggarman." Many great players have covered this one, and I am not among those individuals, lol.

Standing on the Moon (Phil Lesh Tribute)
very nice, great job both of you
@@harrietbarbir8579 I really appreciate the feedback and am very proud of my son, who has come a long way musically in just a few years. Thanks again--Tim.
I'm having a good listen to your stuff Tim. I Love John Martyn also! Also how do you rate Alvarez Guitars vs Martin and Yamaha Tim? Thanks!
Man, I love Martyn, too. His stuff can be really challenging, though. Alvarez IA pretty good. Yairi is as good as anything. Yamaha is my favorite builder overall. I love a lot of Martins, but you have to be careful. They seem to have a lot of troubling QC issues, like binding popping off, cracks in the wood, necks warping after a few months. I kind of do not trust them. It really sucks, because they are capable of great things, but there are too many conplaints.
@timtsh Thanks Tim. I'm interested in Alvarez. I'm considering one as my next guitar. I'm hearing a lot of good things about Yamaha though.
I am not sure what you are looking to spend. It's very hard to beat Yamaha's LS/LL16 series, which comes in at around $1K (US). Their FS/FG9 series ($4K US) is absolutely unbelievable, dream guitars.
@timtsh Thanks Tim I shall check those out!
You see tim I wasnt lying! haha Loving your version.
Gosh, thank you so much. Jack actually arranged it more than I did. He is something else.
nice to see father and son playing a Beatles' song....bravi padre e figlio!
Thank you for the very kind words. Jack and I have a very good time playing together, and he is incredible for a 16-year old playing for about 3 years! Best wishes--Tim.
Awesome, you guys! Well done! Nice to hear and see you both playing together! - Glenn
Thank you so much, Glenn. We had some fun with this one! Best wishes--Tim.
I just maybe the first person to trip out to Jack's playing! You both sound great! Rock on.
@LonePigsyAndCub LOL, my friend. I told him that he's starting to sound like Steve Kimmock's and Dickey Betts' love child 🤣🤣🤣. You are the best, my friend. Thank you for the love--Tim.
Love it!!! Sounds great 👍
I really appreciate the comment. I have been thinking about deleting the few fiddle tunes that I have recorded because I think I am kind of bad at playing that way (and I have gotten some fairly harsh feedback from a few bluegrass people). But if a few folks like what I am doing here, that is good enough for me. Thanks again--Tim.
@ You’re welcome!! I feel like there are too many mean spirited people in the bluegrass world at times. But in my opinion music should be about building others up. If you love what you’re playing, then other people’s opinions don’t matter. I hope this helps. Keep up the good work, my friend!
Oh, I have been around the bluegrass world all my life, and I have met some wonderful people in that world. This is more internet trolls who just like to dig at folks. I am not really a bluegrass player, more of a singer who accompanies himself. I appreciate the reply.
Excellent song performance - this piece always gets me thinking about life and what I'm willing to live with.
Thank you, my friend. It's a very deep song, kind of dark actually, but Prine was sort of dark.
@timtsh I write often. I had no idea how much John Prine impacted my writing. ua-cam.com/video/x-EL04BiC-0/v-deo.htmlsi=sGq3ETEJ3CJQjM1g
Hey, Matthew the beginning and ending of that tune sounded a bit like John Prine. The middle was a bit more experimental. Lyrics wise, I would call you more of an impressionist than Prine, although he often used subtle metaphors. Anyway, I appreciate the share--Tim.
@timtsh Well put, I appreciate your listening and consideration. Yes, I write with free associations and imagery. At times, my stuff is difficult to follow.
I am more than happy to check out your tunes, Matthew. I make music because it's a fun release from the dirt of everyday life. All I can say is keep writing, playing, and singing, especially when people seem to be responding to it. Best wishes--Tim.
Tim, very unique style of playing and very unique dedication to the world that is coming back at these very changing times and coming back fast and steady. Well done. And cheers. Yamaha is cool.
Hey, Vladek. I am glad you are well. Thank you for the wonderful wonderful words. I am glad that my little take on John Prine's great song was all right. It's really good to hear from you. Best wishes--Tim.
I love that song. Great job. It sounds beautiful.
Thank you very much. I love that song, too--Tim.
Really nice Tim. I really like the way you play around with the phrasing on the vocal. This is as fine a vocal as I've heard from you and I like a lot of them quite a bit. And, of course, your accompaniment is right on. I play this a lot too, but have never recorded it - I don't bring anything in particular to it. I just enjoy it.
Gosh, Ray, thank you so much. I have been working on this to record with a friend, and she's really good, so I wanted to give it my best. Anyway, I hope you and your family are doing well and staying warm in this cold weather. It is very cool to hear from you. Best wishes--Tim.
Very nice, Tim! Maybe John Prine's best song, certainly his best known song. Lovely to hear this, Tim! - Glenn
Thank you, Glenn. I think the version that Aly and I are working on will be really pretty. In the demos, she really sounds angelic. You are the best, my friend. I would still go for Sam Stone as maybe Prine's greatest. It's hard to pick, right?
Nice! You always have the ability to put your own spin on songs!
Well, thank you, my friend. I just took the tune down half a step from where Jerry sings it and came up with the simplest arrangement I could muster. Anything that might seem like a spin is really my limitations as a singer and player, lol.
Fantastic! Well done, Tim! ✌❤❄
Thank you, brother!
Beautiful!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate the kindness--Tim.
Nice work!
Thanks a lot, Chuck. I appreciate the comment--Tim.
Fantastic version. Love your voice. What is the model of that Yamaha guitar?
@@danielblackvideo Thank you. That is a Yamaha FG830, surprisingly good acoustic. I appreciate the kind words--Tim.
@ wow what a great guitar. Is it rosewood or mahogany back and sides?
@danielblackvideo It has a solid spruce top, with laminated rosewood back and sides. $350 plus tax. I guess you would call it a beginner guitar, but I just play and sing as a hobby. It's good enough for me, lol.
The UA-cam algorithm blessed me today. I really enjoyed this natural and raw rendition 😊!
Well, thank you so much, friend. I appreciate the nice comment, and I hope you have a good day. Best wishes--Tim.
Man nice work. That was a fine bit of playing and singing. Really enjoyed it.
Thank you for the comment and encouragement. Man, Richard Thompson is still underrated! Best wishes--Tim.
This sounds great!
I appreciate the kind words on my very meager playing. Best wishes--Tim
Oh, very nice, Tim. I sure remember this song from way back. You did a sweet job on this, Tim. Well done! - Glenn
Thank you, Glenn. I always think of Sonny and Cher, lol.
Nice sounds from that Yamaha. Good singing too.
I really appreciate the feedback and encouragement. I recently watched the new Dylan movie, and this tune got stuck in my head. Then I thought of Sonny and Cher's version, and it almost ruined it, lol. Thank you for the comment--Tim.
Great playing and what a fantastic guitar! What mic are you using?
@todd92371 Hey, thank you. It's an Audio Technica AT2020.
@@timtsh Awesome. Keep playing.
The guitar is a Yamaha FG830, very inexpensive but good. Thank you for the comments and the encouragement. I really do appreciate it--Tim.
@@timtsh That guitar sounds awesome. I cannot believe the price they sell at. Good time to be playing.
Todd, I think I have played around 6 different copies of this model, and they were all good. I am not a great player, but I have been at it since 1985. I would still say this would be a great dreadnought for any player at any skill level. My son is more of an electric player (Hendrix, Wes Montgomery), and he picks up my FG830, and it sounds great. So I would check one out if you are ever at a guitar shop with Yamaha in stock.
Very nice job, Tim. Just right on this! Well done! - Glenn
Thank you so much, my friend!
Excellent cover. I've loved Steve Earle's since Guitar Town.
@MatthewWhatleyLiveMusicThrift Thanks for the encouraging words. I was honestly a bit unsure about that one, but I have been a huge SE fan since the mid 1980s, so I like to honor him when I can. Happy New Year--Tim.
@timtsh You're welcome. I didn't know how much he had informed my songwriting until I I wrote this piece and listened to it. ua-cam.com/video/ZS1w25PjImc/v-deo.htmlsi=wK-6x3Oplr9FAWTF
Buen trabajo colega, está muy muy bien, felicidades una vez más desde Madrid y gracias por compartirlo, like 2
Thank you, Jose from Madrid. The beautiful thing about the Internet is that I can record myself playing in my house in NC, and you can see what I am doing across thousands of miles of land and ocean. I appreciate the comment and your kind words. Best wishes--Tim. Happy New Year!
Lovely job on this, Tim! Well done! Merry Christmas and have a great new year! - Glenn
I am so glad you enjoyed it, Glenn. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Ole girl sound just right!!!!
@AdamWillisWilkesMusic Oh, man. That guitar is a wall-hanger at this point. I played it for a friend of mine overseas who wanted to hear it. I appreciate the comment, Adam. Have a great Christmas day, and God bless you--Tim.
You guys are great 👍🏻👍🏻👍 ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
Thank you, my friend. It's hard to get my son to record something. He is so busy. Best wishes--Tim.
Tim, this a great cover. I'm glad to see you're continuing on this path of devotion and dedication. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and all the best to you and yours in this upcoming year.
Hey, Vladek. It's very good to hear from you. Thank you for the kindness, and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as well. I hope everything is going well for you. Peace--Tim.
Good stuff - will check out Mapache so I can name drop them to look cool to the youngsters. 😝
They are two young guys who were in a group called Grateful Shred with bassist Dan Horne. They have since formed their own group. Great singers and songwriters, pretty good guitar players, too. I dig them. Thanks for the love, my friend--Tim.
Well sang, well played. Thank you for posting this piece.
Hey, thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate the kindness. Merry Christmas--Tim.
Fantastic jam!!! ❤❤
Thanks so much. I do a lot of stuff like this, but I never know if it's worth posting. I appreciate the feedback--Tim.
Sounds good, man! My hands get so cold in the winter I'm wearing hand warmers right now!
I actually work in a freezer, but I am old, so I get kind of arthritic. This kind of playing helps me get everything loose to play chords and runs. It has very little structure. Just an Em to D and whatever else pops up, lol. Thank you for the comment and stay warm, my friend. Merry Christmas, dude!
Oh, very nice! Hard to miss with a TVZ tune. That was very nice, nice and relaxed and down home! - Glenn
Well done, Tim! Great old flat picking piece! Great to hear! - Glenn
Thank you, Glenn. Longer comment on AGF.
Really nice version of a classic Tim. Captures the mood perfectly. There's a moment or two of what sounds like a strained vocal, but that's more of an observation than a criticism. Very few of us are great singers, and going for it shows commitment, which is ultimately more important than virtuosity IMO.
Ray, my friend, it is really good to hear from you. I appreciate you taking the time to listen to my little version of this great tune. I am getting over kind of a rough cold/flu, so that might be part of what you are hearing in that recording. I am certainly no virtuoso of any kind, whether singing or playing, just a guy who likes to play a few tunes as a hobby. I would only hope my efforts sound heartfelt (which they are) and not too unpleasant a listening experience (and there's the rub, lol). Anyway, I hope you and your family have a great holiday season. And shoot me a message any time. It is always a pleasure--Tim.
Sounds great
Well, thank you so much, friend. Happy holidays--Tim.
Well done, Tim! Sounds great! - Glenn
It is definitely one of my favorite tunes. Thank you, Glenn.
Great job on this great old song! This is one of those songs I used to play when I was just learning to play when I was about 16 years old. Man, you do a great relaxed job on this! Well done! - Glenn
Thank you so much, Glenn. It is a favorite of mine as well--Tim.
They most certainly are! Nice tune, and your Alvarez sounds great, bro!
@@LonePigsyAndCub Thanks, my friend. Good to hear from you. Best wishes--Tim.
Nice!..........................................................................
@BobWarnerBarn Hey, thanks for the comment and kind words. Best wishes--Tim.
Lovely job on this, Tim! Sounds great! - Glenn
Thank you, Glenn. I posted an extended reply on AGF!
Very nice! 👍 ✌❤❄
Thank you, my friend. That is the closest I will get to a Christmas tune, lol!
You are a pleasure to listen too great guitar thanks for sharing
@allanyork244 Thank you for the incredibly kind words of encouragement. This is what keeps me hitting the record button. Many good vibes--Tim, NC.
Great rendition my musical friend love the solo peace and love to you and yours
Greetings from the UK Bravo my musical friend peace and love to you and yours
Thank you so much. It does mean a lot--Tim.
A fitting tribute to Phil Lesh, Tim. Very nice job on this. - Glenn
Thank you, Glenn. It took me a while to play and sing this without getting too emotional. It reminds me of Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, and they were major musical heroes of mine--Tim.
You got me right in the feels! 😭Your voice sounds beautiful, bro! I've been feeling so melancholy knowing another one of my heroes has gone. Gonna go have a cry now for reals!
Thank you, my friend. It took me a week to be able to do this without crying. Peace and best wishes--Tim.
Beautiful slow and easy reading of this tune, Tim. Your strumming and singing are just right on...
Ray, I appreciate the comment and am glad that you dug that take on it. Best wishes--Tim.
