A well wrapped Christmas present for my grandchild
Everyone wished they could surf like him back then.
Saw him and Lidell at Panics back then. Pulling in the barrel from the peak on every wave. Nobody at that time was doing that.
His surfing was decades ahead of what everyone else was doing then.
That redline has my heart pumping 🙌🏾🙏🏾
He was da man with bertleman and lidell back in the day
Everyone will unfortunately only remember him wasted away on dog the bounty hunter
Never saw that so I remember him the way he was in this video.
@joeblow1942 good for you, dude
Great song…
Oof.
70s.
Remember seeing him on a episode of dog the bounty hunter
I watched this dude in the 80 ts so cool and back then no holding the rail free stand that’s surfing man 🤙
It was Hawaiis Buttons and Larry BERTLEMAN who inspired pioneer skateboarders the ZBOYS of Dogtown. Stylish carving and turning inspired Venice and Santa Monica surfers to hit the asphalt and concrete
Unfortunately the ICE got the man. He was a fantastic talent and person.
what happened
@@87gn199 battled drug addiction really lost his way. Got sober but died at 54 from lung cancer. Battled drug addiction for a long time. Good hearted person, ice will destroy you.
💖
James Jennings dropped in on me at Kirra,1979/80,once and i boasted about that till this day, cause i'm a kook from Rocky.(he said"Sorry Mate,i didn't see you"✌️
Nice story and memory to have , definitely worth boasting about ua-cam.com/video/UCqModvn7kU/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
@@loachy06 Nice memory mate. You would be in a small group of hundreds I suspect with the same tale. :)
My cousin Marvin rippin.

Is that how good meth feels.? What a living legend….
Style Master 💪
Id like tonsee some modern pros riding the same style boards. Im curious if the thicker curvier boards of the late 70s and 80s were better suited to the waves or if these guys were just that good
I’m sure those boards will be “trendy “ again someday. The surfers were good though!
On a single. One of the best styles. So loose and agile
“I always used to go to Pipe and surf it by myself in the super early dawn until the sun came up and it got crowded. I wanted to know the place. By myself. But it was no love affair. That place kicked my ass 100 times. But by the time I showed up for the Pipeline Masters in 1981, no one understood how experienced I was. How well I knew that wave.I It was pretty windy out there, hard to see on takeoff and when Buttons accidentally dropped in on me in the semifinal and he got that interference call against himself, well, you know the North Shore, it’s frontier justice over there. The locals went ballistic and wanted to kill me for ending Buttons’ chances to be in the final. There was a riot on the beach after the heat. It would have been funny if the death threats weren’t so real. Buttons, Mickey Neilson, and Marvin Foster intervened and saved my life. It was all quite shocking to me because I have always had great relationships with all the Hawaiians.“ AB “The broadcast footage, aired at a later date with the live scores on the screen, indicated that Alan Byrne had decisively won the close event. But on the day of the event, the organizers had no choice. There was no way they could give the win to Alan Byrne. Not without a full-scale uprising. In a hurried nervous beachside award ceremony, the first place trophy and $16,000 went to Simon Anderson and his new three fin thruster design.” Matt George “Buttons and Simon and I were cool. Real cool. We didn’t want any trouble. It was just the lay of the land. But still, I always wanted to be a Pipe Master. That was my moonshot. I tried seven more times, up until I was 39 years old. But 1981 was my year for that dream. And it became my nightmare.“ AB
Well Ab, I've never realy been a competition surfer, & never been to Hawaii, my belief has always been, just go surfing Man 🏄♂️
@@pubgutt2076 sadly Allan Byrne passed away 8 or so years ago after a motorcycle accident
I surfed Hawaii in 1977-78. Several North Shore locals, on finding out that I was a Kiwi, told me that everyone watching the final knew that Allan Byrne clearly won over Simon Anderson in 1981.
That's 1987-88
Cool board 🤙

Thanks for sharing this AB ,it i really very interesting ,as for the the footage of Buttons its the most exquisite and graceful backhand at pipe ever😊
I wonder if the 7 man final was the result of "persuasion" by thuggish locals.
I’ve posted an Allen Byrne quote Interesting read
Pretty sure Buttons should've won.
That layback was ballsy!
that first wave he nearly made was a ten now days! never seen this footage, love the old grainy colour , the blue turns turquoise'y looks like a classic pipe day, just got home after a shitty day fencing in the rain in North wales U.K p.s subscribed x
Cheers. I found my old surf videos. This is from Ocean Fever which features Buttons a few times. Fantastic surfer
what ever happened to him since then
From which movie? Savage Cuts?
