Saw him and Lidell at Panics back then. Pulling in the barrel from the peak on every wave. Nobody at that time was doing that.

His surfing was decades ahead of what everyone else was doing then.

It was Hawaiis Buttons and Larry BERTLEMAN who inspired pioneer skateboarders the ZBOYS of Dogtown. Stylish carving and turning inspired Venice and Santa Monica surfers to hit the asphalt and concrete

Id like tonsee some modern pros riding the same style boards. Im curious if the thicker curvier boards of the late 70s and 80s were better suited to the waves or if these guys were just that good

It would have been funny if the death threats weren’t so real. Buttons, Mickey Neilson, and Marvin Foster intervened and saved my life. It was all quite shocking to me because I have always had great relationships with all the Hawaiians.“ AB “The broadcast footage, aired at a later date with the live scores on the screen, indicated that Alan Byrne had decisively won the close event. But on the day of the event, the organizers had no choice. There was no way they could give the win to Alan Byrne. Not without a full-scale uprising.
