RAMMED EARTH MUD HOUSE
DTD Studio, who is in the process of building a Eco-friendly building. Look out for the design of the home we made as per their needs and how we faced various challenges in shelter making. With the genuine interest in living in a home, made of natural materials, we inquire for support in the form of consultants, natural builders, artisans, workers, material vendors, and the list goes on.
But, if we see in many rural areas, we can find many owners building their home using cement and concrete, in a conventional way, where the responsibilities for building the home are handled by the owner, as per his needs. But in the case of making a natural building, he/she needs to find answers suitable for his land, available materials, and climate, to make decisions, just like in farming
Location: near Kelambakkam, 20-30 km away from Chennai.
Plot area: 1,800 square feet.
Total built-up area: 2,700 square feet (250 square meter)
Type of the building: Mud building

Can we use this roofing for room size of 30 feet x 20 feet? Since the span is large, can we use 14 inch steel beams as a replacement for wood rafters?

We in Punjab had similar roofs back in old before switching to RCC. These roofs kept the house cool

This is not eco-friendly. This is very expensive than RCC roof and very very heavy when compared with RCC.
Vanakkam sir, Eco-friendly construction actually means in terms of reducing the carbon foot print on the planet,giving a healthier space to live in and not reduction on paper money. Yes they are expensive as we need skilled artisans to make the roof. Madras terrace roofing technique is heavier, which helps in thermal insulation (keeping the indoor temperature less by 5 - 6 degree Celsius) and that is why their life span of Madras terrace roof is more than 200 years. The old buildings you see in and around Tami Nadu which are more than 300+ years have these roofing techniques. RCC in no where in comparison to these time tested techniques , as RCC will give you a lot of heat into the spaces and has very low thermal insulation.To make it precise,the life span of concrete slabs is not more than 70 years.Since Mardras terrace roofs are not been used by larger scale of people, they are expensive. Till 1970's, Madras terrace roofs were cheaper than RCC slabs.
