    From a garden to a city… that’s where the crux of the argument lies, it seems. That’s the point at which one may choose to finally agree or disagree with his postulation that the West and Christianity are essentially separate and not equal. And his position offers no definitive explanation for if he’s correct then how to reconcile God leading man from a garden to a city. I think that’s exactly the difference he’s getting at though… both the West and God can lead a people to a city. Once built, however, those cities will look very different from one another and the fact of two different builders will be indisputable. From this, one can fairly presume that some individuals might be able to see that there is not one but two being built sooner along the timeline than others, which we would attribute to God’s action and not theirs. The fact that they cannot definitely explain more than that they see two cities rather than one, with some differences noted and evidence given, doesn’t mean they aren’t right. The fact that they don’t know what, then, that other city looks like at its completion is meaningless. Stones for one city may have been place and set for entirely different reasons and purposes. They may have also been placed using different means/technology, and perhaps that’s the point. And I actually think there’s a case to be made that that is the point. The city of the West has been born, one could say by natural generation, by human choice, or by a man’s decision. The New Jerusalem might have been born, “not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.” We know that its members share this quality, though what that means is still much a matter of conjecture. Though I’d say that if you’re not experiencing it, you would not have any way of knowing. You can’t see what you can’t see. And you can’t describe what you’ve never seen. At best, you might be able to relate other’s explanations of what they’ve seen or claim to have see/see, but even then you’d have no way of distinguishing between even those two accounts. It’s very unlikely you’d come even remotely close.

    This guy would greatly benefit from some time lifting weights and in a boxing gym. Such a weak man lecture. He is incapable of seeing that the real reason that the modern world is in a crisis is due to the self-loathing weak and feminized men like himself. The history of the west is not "Judeo-Christian" in the least. It could be best and clearly described as "Pagan-Christian." "We are not sheep and donkeys, not helpless prey animals to be herded and caged, we are the sons of Odin and Mars, we are the sons of wolves." Embrace your true nature. It is not your enemy. Men like this one are the real enemy within.

    This is a passionate, interesting speech. Unfortunately it is from a very naive person. It is similar to Plato's Republic trying to set up the perfect society with perfect leaders. If men were angels or if angels were governed men as James Madison said, we could have the kind of society this man wants. But men are not angels and angels do not govern them and therefore we need the type of society that we have to keep it civilized and to protect us from evil. I had a missionary tell me once that the United States is necessary and its prosperity is necessary so that missionaries could go around the world and do their job. Without freedom and some amount of financial resources, missionary work would not be possible. As Thomas Sowell often says, beware of the Utopian academic who has grand plans to fix the world.

    Ancient Christians considered it their highest honor, their greatest achievement in life, to die a glorious death for the noble and worthy cause of Jesus Christ, they loved their lives not so much as to shrink from death. What shall we say then? Have I not told you all that you need to know? Yes, following Christ is possible and highly rewarding, even in a lost and dying world. In a world full of false idols, cheap inspiration, lies of peace, toxic laziness, damnable heresies, endless blasphemy, treacherous dealings, hopeless experiences, and never-ending let downs, Jesus Christ is still there waiting for you to come to yourself and let go of your life. Unfortunately, most people have lost the ability to listen and you may therefore consider my conclusions a waste of time or merely academic. I say that uncovering the truth is never a waste of time and exposing the lies of deceitful devils is never academic. Fortune favors the bold and where no risk is taken, no rewards follow. As for me, I want more from my life than what this world can offer and very graciously God has given me the opportunity to be a Christian, so I intend to make the most of it. I am determined to walk worthy of Him and His Gospel.

    Far too much leaning to "because of," rather than "in spite of." People much desire wealth everywhere and at all times, and Christians are far from the most covetous of gold. It was Christians, not Jews or Muslims, or Buddhists, or Hindus, or even American Indians who developed and normalized extra-tribal charity (if such a thing exists in many parts of the world even today). We have seen, objectively, that compared to job creation, welfare fails at the task of improving lives. God made Adam a gardener in Eden, then made him and his sons farmers and herders in exile. You are in exile, not Eden, and that, too, was God's will. Joseph's money paid for Jesus' tomb. Perhaps He would have popped up just as well had they heave-ho'd Him into a refuse pile in the Valley of Hinnom. That's not how the story went, though, and one presumes God had a reason for it. "Social justice," is not about the rich putting their wealth to some good. Social justice is an expression of the religion of Diamat, whose aim is a complete leveling, an annihilation. Kulaks begin as wealthy peasants, and end as a family that has one more chicken than you. Do not be so foolish as to think they will stop at the "wealthy," no matter what you think that word means. Of the millions starved and butchered by Cambodian Diamatists, none were wealthy by American standards. Ascetics built Christian culture most of all under the protection of Christian kingdoms. Hard to preserve the writings when Viking savages burn the abbeys down. Sure, those monks had a say in Christian culture, but so did Constantine, Charles Martel, and the Emperors of Byzantium. You may reorient yourself while you yet live in the warmth that remains of the West, but make no mistake: the Machine, the Marxians, and the Muslims absolutely desire to snuff out that flame. Your holy inaction will lead to the loss of any ability of those who follow to act, to orient, toward Christ. Christendom barely survived the Romans who were far more ecumenical than the children of totalitarian ideologies. So, go with your soft hands and self-satisfaction. Just do it over there on the side and out of the way.

    Wonderful speech, and, like others have said, I hesitate to offer criticism, but I believe the ideas Paul touches on here are central to understand the present moment, that engagement with them is sure to be fruitful, and even that improvement upon them is possible. I admire Kingsnorth for his incisive, courageous, truthful speech, and his uniquely tuned perceptiveness. Still, as someone well schooled in Jordan Peterson, I do believe Paul's read on him is not quite charitable enough, neither is it dead-on accurate. Peterson, perhaps, over emphasizes the concordance of Christianity with properly operating cultural institutions and solutions, with the instruments of conquest and power. Paul, in turn, perhaps under emphasizes it. Just as God, in the prophetic literature, condemns decadence and opulence, scripture elsewhere speaks of the corollary relationship between right action and worldly regard, even wealth and power (see Proverbs). Jesus, after all, "grew in stature before God and men," even while insisting emphatically that it is all but impossible for the rich to inherit the Kingdom of God. Ultimately, Kingsnorth here goes too far when he states, "Christianity is impractical," and "It's designed to kill you." When I read the gospels, I see a relationship between the primary good of following God through Jesus, and the whole suite of secondary goods that, as Paul perceptively indicates, we are so tempted to idolize. "Seek yee the Kingdom first, and all these will also be granted unto you." This is what it means that Christ is the Logos in the beginning, the world is ordered around his Word, and his Way is The Way to true life. Christianity is designed to lead us to true life, "life to the full". Unfortunately, in our turbulent culture of disposable relationships, usury, immediacy, and instrumentality, we are forced to ask, like Habakuk, "why do the wicked prosper"? The answer, like it was in Habakuk's time, is that judgement is coming. The ultimately impractical culture is proving to be our culture in it's supposed practicality. When we look around and see that the world and Christ are irredeemably at odds, like Kingsnorth here, we are perceiving something all too real, but we are not taking a view with a long-enough frame. Christ, the Word in the beginning, has structured reality in such a way that He and His way prevails. He is making all things new. Peterson, for all his faults, offers a powerful antidote to nihilists committed to the essential evil and corruptedness of reality: He who wrote the laws of the cosmos desires to dwell in your heart. Our humanness is decidedly good, we are created in God's own image, and, when we subject ourselves to Him, our human efforts can even contribute and figure into His redemptive arch. You can, indeed, "have life to the full", but only if you never forget that such life is only found through "denying yourself daily". We fell from the Garden, but are returning to the New Jerusalem. And as God restores all things, I desire only to walk the path Christ has laid before me, grateful for the luminaries and guides such that both Kingsnorth and Peterson have been to me. If nothing else, I am grateful that civilization and techné have brought these two great teachers to me.

    Bro, how are you supposed to love your neighbor if you don't have a city? And of course Jesus Christ was civilized. What is the logos if not the spirit that moves everything into order in its proper hierarchical place. What do you think the Heavenly Jerusalem is? And even though I don't agree on a lot of subjects with Peterson, that was a weak blow you gave him. Picking at him because he didn't say Jesus Christ in a short film is judging on the surface. I hear a lot of folks claiming the name of Jesus only to give some credibility to their nonsense. Here is a window of repentence for you, Paul.

  • @EdMcB
    @EdMcB 26 днів тому

    ‘Do not resist evil’ is not as difficult an instruction to implement as people have supposed as a result of its translation. ‘Resist’ is what we would nowadays mean by ‘fight’. It intends the same meaning as Nietzsche when he wrote ‘He who fights with monsters should take care lest he thereby become a monster’, and it is also what is meant by Bernard Shaw with the phrase “Never wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it”. To turn the other cheek is a metaphor. It does not mean a person should stand by and do nothing to protect another from harm, it simply means to not be provoked or baited by negativity, which always seeks to recruit people to negativity through retaliation.

    • @emilymiller1792
      @emilymiller1792 22 дні тому

      I think the meaning of "hate' your parents" is that if they are seriously not in alignment with God, then you should choose God. That is for extreme cases. I don't think He means for us to hate them, considering he put up near the top of the commandments to love our neighbor as ourselves, and to ask ourselves, who is my neighbor?

    • @EdMcB
      @EdMcB 20 днів тому

      @ Yes, once again it is a translational problem. It’s meaning is steeped in esotericism and really means to be able to ‘leave’ or forget your parents, and most likely refers to acceptance of death and the acceptance of the end of transient physical relationships entirely. The message is that attachment to earthly loyalties can obscure your relationship and understanding of the true nature of God.
