Last NHL game before the infamous season long lockout
1:29:58
Both teams need these uni’s again permanently.
Keon plays with intelligence, logic and intent. He seems difficult to contain and neutralize. A difficult and problematic foe that requires advanced planning and structure.
The usual overhyping in NY. The up coming Devils with Rookie Marty vs 8 Dynasty Oilers, 6 Hawks w/ Keenan & 2 Rangers. There’s way too many better series then this one. The Stars vs Devils, Sabres vs Devils, Isles vs Flyers, Avs vs Det. and Flyers vs Devils easily.
2:12:56 ...And Then But It Happened.
I remember I was in my room listening to this on the radio when Zelepukin scored. Couldn’t believe it, but that’s the rangers for you
Great gamd the hurricane and oilers wow a upset
Was there ever a better play-by-play announcer than Bill Hewitt? When I was a boy, I used to able to close my eyes and listen to Bill who described the action so vividly, I could picture absolutely everything that was going on. He was the absolute best, although Danny’s Gallivan and the great Dan Kelly weren’t far behind…
Even though I’m not a fan of the Penguins logo at the time, I will still rock those jerseys.
Any use of this video without the express written consent of the National Hockey League, President Gary Bettman, and the Toronto Maple Leafs is wholeheartedly encouraged.
I love the NHL on NBC way more than on ESPN
This is when society peaked. No internet. no social media. no selfies. no POS orange coverage...no damn digital ads on the ice whilst watching the game on TV , no stupid ads on jerseys... turn 42 tomorrow.. and I can honestly say as a 14 yr old in 1997... the future looked sooooooooooooooooooo promising... every league was great to watch.. NHL.. NBA... NFL... MLB... I am glad I was a child during humanity's last innocence
It will a very long time before we see another team from Canada win the cup
Back when a GAA under 4 for a goalie was considered pretty good.
April 25th 1971
The nets were cooler looking back then than todays square soccer type.
Giacomin had the coolest mask.

10 yrs from 84 Oilers..... wow times change. Messier , Lowe playing in New York New!
What great memories. Also, I laugh every time I see Lindros with the C on his sweater.
Why is that bro??
Greatest 7 game series of my lifetime
Daddy bettman been taking care of Tampa and Panther fans for the last 20 years this is why I dont watch hockey anymore shit is rigged as fuck.
Unless you're angrily trolling, I'd like to know what events convinced you of this. Both of these clubs built up talent and suffered heartbreaking losses before finally winning it all. Florida was a perennial doormat prior to 2021. FLA - 1998 to 2021 - 3 playoff appearances, all first round exits. The Lightning have advanced to six Eastern Conference Finals since 2015. Yet only two Cups out of six deep playoff runs. They were also one of the most penalized teams for most of their run of dominance. These clubs successes and failures directly correlate to their high end talent and team health (or lack thereof).
Roloson doesnt get hurt,Oilers win
can't believe those 2 idiot fans giving lonsberry crap near the end of the 3rd period. Roscoe played for the Bruins in the late 60s. I guess he got the last laugh.
I’ve been a Ranger fan since 1962. This was the first time I ever experienced them winning a series in the playoffs.
The Thrashers will be missed
And now In 2024 is the remake with two of their rivals Florida vs Edmonton
20 years after one Florida team won their first Stanley Cup, another Florida team won their first Stanley Cup
The Tampa Bay Lightning became the first NHL team in the Southern United States to win Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals ten years after the Houston Rockets became the first NBA team in the Southern United States to win Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
How is it that no other purist hockey fan(s) posted any comments. This game was unbelievable. Everyone can observe just how talented the NYR really were, and how dirty hockey was back then. What is a penalty today is a routine hit in this generation. There were skaters, there were hitters, even in this era. Exciting nonetheless. Tremendously exciting action ❤❤❤❤
Who’s watching this after the Oilers Forced game 7 against the Panthers
ME
came here to see oil lose, its a treat.
1:49:44, 1:59:39 can never forget Josef Vasicek, shall he rest easy
This game was unbelievable. Action, saves, hits, scoring chances. INCREDIBLE ❤❤❤
This game was non stop end to end action. This game was no joke compared to present playoff action. All the thrills, hits, you could ask for and more. GREAT GAME. ❤❤❤❤
The best game I ever attended, sat just behind Boomer Eliason, got his autograph and then overtime winner!!!! No live game will ever come close for me.
‘The parade will follow the usual route.’
Watching these Red Wings is exactly like watching the Florida Panthers of this season and last season (2023-2024), and as a Bruins fan, it makes my stomach turn. A team that refuses to lose is willing to sacrifice anything to win. If an opposing player gets the puck, they know that the opposing team has instantly targeted them and are now closing in to try to hurt them. When you play a team that is so willing to hurt themselves to stop you, and they take the lead, and have elite goaltending on top of that.... you may as well give up because you won't beat them. You absolutely cannot let a team like this get the lead, and just one defensive mistake is all it takes to give them the lead. This is what the Oilers will be facing this year in the finals. They are all going to get hurt badly if they find a way to beat the Panthers. Oilers fans should be praying to give their team strength right about now. You can take these 97 Red Wings against any NHL team today, and they will have a good chance of winning. It's unreal. Look at the freaking legends on the ice here. I blows the mind!
Like I said, the goal at 13:02 in the second. Petit takes his eye off the play to look back at the bench and slowed down, leaving the entire right side of the ice wide open and thus giving McCarty far too much room to move the goalie around. Had he skated his ass off to cover the right side approach, he takes away the option to move the goalie to his other post, and is faced with a low chance shot against a well position goalie with a clean line of sight. Never take your eyes off the play kids!! Never slow your skating while chasing an opponent into your defensive zone.
2:17:53 Tikkanen gets tripped, second Devils player sticks stickblade between his feet again to make him lose balance. Haha
Looks like Matteau was hooked as he scored. Even more impressive.
The difference was huge between the old teams vs the new teams 1967- 1971…
Great video quality. I was 16 when this game was played. Great series!
As a Rangers fan, this might be the first time I’ve ever heard Gary Thorne’s call on Matteau’s goal. Sounds like he was a little confused when he said 1940 is history. That would take another seven games to be true.
I remember this I was 14 years old
Looking back on this game as a Canes fan, the most underrated thing from Game 7 to me was the impact Erik Cole had on the game in just his 2nd game back from a broken neck that he suffered not even 3 and a half months before. He got his legs back under him in Game 6, and then was an absolute banshee in Game 7! Didn't register a point, but his defensive play on the boards set up the first goal, he drew the penalty to set up the power play that got the second goal, and was just giving the Oilers D fits the entire time he was on the ice
The thing that amazed to me most about this game and the thing I didn’t know is the fan stood the entire game. I’ve seen people do that for overtime in the playoffs, but never for the entire game. People can say whatever they want about hockey in the south, but we do love our hockey

If it wasn't for that penalty does Coaches Corner ever exist?
