Youth Basketball Drills
Micah and I spent a little time in the driveway doing a few different drills. No common theme amongst them, and I didn't initially film them with the intent of posting them to UA-cam. But after watching them, I figured others could benefit from them.
I labeled them youth drills because of the focus areas I noted in the video. But truthfully these drills should be done by more advanced players, with focus on things like keeping the ball from the defender, avoiding travels, deception of the moves, etc.

5 Ways to Guard PnR - Part 2 (Switches)
Переглядів 37Місяць тому
In a continuation of this series, we go over the second way to guard Pick and Rolls - switches (and how to counter the defenses choices!). It's a longer series, in more of a podcast/discussion type format (everyone has a podcast these days, so why not me too?). I'm joined in today's video by another basketball nerd - my brother Aaron. By day, Aaron works in the medical industry, but by night he...

Hand the Ball off Like Daymond
Переглядів 2138 місяців тому
The handoff - so simple, right? Well, we couldn't make it work on our 4th grade team last year, so I watched some Draymond Green tape to understand how he makes it work for the Warriors.
Form Shooting and Basic Footwork

Third video in the series from a practice we spent on individual skills drills. This part of the practice was devoted to form shooting and basic footwork going into a jump shot.
Motion Ball Handling - Youth/Beginners
Переглядів 1058 місяців тому
Second video from practice where we did a few motion ball handling drills. This is beginner level stuff - a more experienced ball handler should implement more advanced footwork into their ball handling routine. These drills are meant to get youth/beginner players thinking through a few core concepts of dribbling, namely: 1) keeping your dribble away from the defender 2) the importance of using...

5 Out Play - Motion Toledo

This is a simple toss/handoff or fake toss/handoff play designed to give players multiple options based on what the defense is reacting to. It's simple, but variable enough to give options once the defense knows the play.
Moves and Countermoves - Play Variations
Переглядів 4310 місяців тому
A basketball play is meant to be more than what is drawn up on the play diagram. What happens when a defense sees the play a few times? Players must be able to react to the defense and provide a countermove, otherwise teams would need to have dozens of plays in their arsenal to keep the defense off guard. In today's video we talk about some variations to the play we call "Smash". One play can r...
Two Simple Plays for a 5 Man Out Offense - Youth Basketball
Переглядів 26811 місяців тому
Two simple plays for a 5 man out offense that I use for my 4th grade youth team. "Smash" - a backscreen for the point guard to shed an aggressive defender and prevent backcourt turnovers. "Stagger Low" - a stagger screen for the corner man, and a bonus backscreen if the initial stagger screen doesn't result in a layup.

    Difficult for some of us 90's players that were trained this was carrying or double dribble. I still can't bring myself to carry and these younger guys have no issue.

      The game is called very differently today, and IMO it's important to adapt or you'll be left behind. That drift move that 90's players would call a carry is the most lethal weapon on the court today. Can't afford to not learn and use it.

    could you explain what hedging is?

    • @Runk-TCBasketball
      @Runk-TCBasketball 6 місяців тому

      Sure! First off - in the context of a screen or a handoff action, hedging pertains to the defender guarding the screener or player handing off the ball. The defender is 'hedging' when they step out in front of the ball handler as they go around the screen/handoff. In a scenario where the defender hedges, they are attempting to push the ball handler either back the way they came, or toward the sideline and away from the basket. You'll hear it being referred to as "stretching out the ball handler". Important to note: hedging is not a switch. When a defender hedges, they are buying time for their teammate guarding the ball to get back into position, at which point they'll recover to the screener.

    How do you feel about practicing free throws for someone who plays pick up ball? Practically you'll never take them but they do seem to translate to jumper form

    • @Runk-TCBasketball
      @Runk-TCBasketball 8 місяців тому

      FT shooting % correlates directly to jumper FG%. So yes, i think it's a good idea. You see me working on them in this video for that very reason. Even in the refereed games I still play in, I don't take FT's often. I practice them to work on my upper body form. Since the distance is always the same, and I'm not engaging my lower body to the same degree by jumping, it reduces the variables in the shot that can go wrong. It's essentially an extension of a form shot.

    Shooting is the most important skill, more than ball handling. Points are scored by shooting, not dribling.

    • @mateusz4419
      @mateusz4419 8 місяців тому

      It's true, but if you want to shoot from good position you have to dribble and get this good position even with a weak hand(in my opinion)

    • @pabl0x11
      @pabl0x11 8 місяців тому

      @@mateusz4419 thats an option, but shooting of the dribble is more difficult than catch and shoot. You can access a good position thru cutting. Look at klay 43 points with only 4 dribbles

    • @Runk-TCBasketball
      @Runk-TCBasketball 8 місяців тому

      I disagree, but we're all shaped by our experiences! I was always my teams good/great shooter, but never better than the 3rd scoring option because I couldn't separate to get shots. 95% of my shots always came from someone else's dribble creation, which left me open due to a cut or help defender collapsing. But the beauty of basketball is that it doesn't have to be played one way. If you combine great shooting with elite off-ball moving and teammates that know how to space and/or screen effectively, you can certainly score in volume without dribbling much. Ideally, you can do all 3 really well!

    No idea why you showed up in my feed but it was a solid video. You've got a good manner of speech and you matched the video length to the amount of good content you had. Some content makers try to turn 4 minutes of worthwhile info into a 15 minute video. That is a waste of time. This video was not a waste of time. GL.

      @@29DarkBoy I think he's right, from a technical perspective. Example; 0:50s - if you freeze it, you can see my fingers are "under" the ball for brief moment as I push it forward. My opinion is that a ref is unlikely to call that, but they could! I'll cover it in a future video.
