I think so. Targaryens are very mobile but they are also extremely fragile, plus the scorpion is much more threatening against cavalry. Being outflanked protects the ranger hunters from the token dump targaryens have become notorious for, and unless they can take two ranks off the ranger hunters in one go they still have a very significant threat against most everything. Especially with pyke aggression in the deck, dragons are at a high risk of getting one shot.

Thats great input, thank you! I think he might still struggle, between othell, the objective shots, and the scorpion I think he might have still gotten whittled away enough that cotter could break through the front door. But that would have probably been closer.

@@BrokenBanners yeah. And I just had a game this evening that I lost in part to being TOO clumped up so that my sentinel charges failed because there was no room! So it's possible to err too much the other way...

Most bang for buck position of Outriders is really in the center so that there is a higher chance you can pull off the Tactical Reposition shenanigans.

Barristan Selmy can't cancel Selyse & Shireen's once per game as it doesn't target (because the ability doesn't let you choose a specific unit out of multiple possible targets, it's not a tactics card or order that mentions the unit or belongs to the unit, and the word "target" is not used). If Selyse & Shireen would be somehow canceled then you could use the ability later that round to save a unit because it also cancels the "once per game" part.

Half of the challenge of using Barristan properly is knowing what Barristan can interact with! Thanks for the explanation, no one caught it until we started discussing that play much later.

It definitely makes my non-rerolling archer unit even less efficient, 100%.

Glad you enjoyed. Part of the draw to Targs for me was the diverse cast of units, it was fun to try and showcase other units for a change.

No, in the 2021 edition of the rules (current edition) an NCU MUST have a tactics board zone that they can claim. Even in Here We Stand, where an NCU can take a spot on the tactics board, they must have a spot on the Tactics Board available. -Esad

Funny enough I don’t think their offensive power is an issue. People often cite to that as the issue but they’re not the hardest hitting unit in the game, not by a long shot. I think the issue is To The Last is too much on them and is too big of a “list check.” That strong of a defensive ability on such an offensive unit is insane and I think with Brotherhood without Banners on the horizon we’ll truly see what King’s Men are capable of. I am adamantly of the opinion that To The Last should be replaced with Relentless. -Esad

@@BrokenBanners that TTL is there so KM wont get oneshoted. We have such aggressive meta (Victorian SM, Gregor CRHG, Pyke, Khal) that TTL is required, as they dont have any other defensive ability.

Hard to disagree with that. Season 5 may not be as bad as Season 3 and the Golden Company Swords meta but there are still so many commander-unit combos that consistently kill a unit in two attacks. Maybe I'm just bitter that Rose Knights still suck. -Esad

You are notorious for failing charges; even 2+ charges are (generally) a challenge for your Baratheons so it was great to have a game where you nailed so many charges. I think this game, and the way you played it, is a great lesson for anyone interested in competitive play. Everyone will make "that" mistake, or miss "that" roll and put the game in a losing position. Being able to pull it back and at least make it a closer game is huge for tournament scoring. I've seen many a player edge out the difference between third and second based on that kind of play, and a few times even the difference between first and second! -Esad

Its an interesting dynamic. Threaten and some other tools available to targ drastically improve the survivability of a dragon, especially when fire made flesh is factored in. They bring a lot of unmitigatable damage on a unit that essentially doesnt take panic damage. But I think we’re seeing a lot of tools coming out with other factions that help keep it in check. Baratheons have gained some mobility and damage consistency, combined with the infamous final strike. Starks have a lot of alpha strike still and with their mobility I think even with one of (but not multiple) of a targ player’s tools a dragon can get beat up. I agree that with all of the tools available its very difficult to kill a dragon. I think control elements are going to become more and more important as factions, including targs with MOD, gain access to some really powerful and hard to deal with units. I want to get some more games in against dragons with not-Renly 2 and see how it fairs, as well as some nights watch. I think MOD buffs are nice but I dont think they pass drogo… yet
