Jeep WJ 4.7L AC Bypass
Переглядів 5 тис.5 років тому
So, I did an engine swap back in 2016. First run was great, but had an annoying squeak ever since. About 10 months later, after replacing the idler pulley, I broke down and replaced the AC pulley. That pulley finally failed me, but when I went to replace it today, I found that the compressor needs to be replaced (last few seconds of this video explains why). Until I can get a replacement, I dec...

Response to ua-cam.com/video/onpmFNsXFr4/v-deo.html First video using the X-Box Game DVR in Windows 10. Very easy to use, but it does not capture dialog boxes, which makes the video a little odd, but it works. I'm open to suggestions on other software to create videos from the computer screen. I have Cam Studio, but it's a bit of a resource hog. Also, apologies for the audio... apparently Dell ...

Don't replace the field coil if you don't have to... that snap ring is a serious PITA. If you don't have feeler gauges, cards work. They're about 0.0115 each, so 2 of them is 0.023, which puts us right in the middle of the 0.018-0.030 spec.

Not-quite-off-road with my Jeep. Driving up to Peak Knob on Draper Mountain. It's private land, so no.. you can't go. I took the video out of sheer boredom. Sorry about NPR in the background, it was either that, gospel, or some really bad country.

Doesn't sound too different than my old engine, but put this up to solicit opinions.
WJ 4.7L Engine Swap - First Run
Переглядів 1,2 тис.8 років тому
The engine in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee dropped a valve seat at 249,512 miles, so I swapped it with a Jasper Reman that only had 12k miles on it. This is actually the second run, as the first real run was for just a few seconds to check for fuel leaks. More on my saga at www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/top-end-grenaded-3857721/
Quick walk to the basement

I'm going to have to haul a 400 pound engine from the parking lot to my basement. Planning on getting a large wagon, but it's still going to be a chore getting it down there.

1 minute of BUBBLES!!! Life doesn't get much more exiting than this!
so smart
WHAT'S THE FKN POINT ???...
There was absolutely NO point... yet this idiotic video with 1 minute of bubbles has 61k views.
THE POINT IS THAT NO ONE REALLY KNOWS A GOTT DAM THING ANYMORE THAN I DOO
Great engine
Thanks! Had to replace it like 3 years after this video. New engine has ~5 years on it and doesn't look anywhere near as good.
Awsome job, bro. You might have children, but you have a wife, and you're continuing your life. You're in your 50s, according to what i heard , so have fun for the rest of your life
Congrats!
6PK2120 or K060837 or 83.7"
Could you tell me what belt number that is? I could sure use one, my ac is out
Belt part number at AutoZone ?
Just did this oh thank you guys ac compressor in may of 2023 don't need ac in the winter
Hey good morning, I also have the 4.8L and wanted to know what belt size or part number for the serpentine belt was used? It would be greatly appreciated👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Move the board without holes?
I lost the bleeder screw fml right! Anyone know where I can order one ?
👍 👍
FYI Dorman sells a A/C bypass pulley. Just look up Dorman 34292. its also on amazon and its dirt cheap.
That "cheap" part cost more then a shorter belt lol
What coolant is that? I thought it had to be yellow I’m all confused
You’re right. Don’t use green coolant. G05 or whatever it’s called ONLY. This block is aluminum and I’d be surprised if the truck in this video is still running.
Just to remind everybody make sure you do this when your vehicle is completely cold then open up that plug otherwise you're going to be rushed to the hospital
Do I have to turn on the heater?
Is there a way to do this with the divide tool? I've tried editing the component, and going through the procedure to divide the circles but it won't them let me push the holes through the board. It keeps making the circles their own component instead of making them part of the board like it should (triple-clicked on the board).
Great tip, thanks
You quickly skimmed over the most important step. That’s not the was to do and instructional vid.
Great but how do you fill them back up. Everyone seems to skip this part.
Glad I found this. Thank you so much. Shame I spent so long the first time because I didn't know how.
Just replaced water pump, t stat, fan clutch qnd now not getting any heat through heater in my 2002 ram 1500 4.7. Would a clogged heater core cause slight overheating?
Also noticed upper rad hose had tons of air pressure.
low vis, same thing happened to me. did you figure out what the problem was?
@@parkerprecision6675 so i flushed heater core with water hose and got some stop leak gunk outta there which greatly improved my heater but still had overheating. noticed my coolant smelled like gasoline as well so i tore apart the whole engine and found out i blew my headgasket lol
@@parkerprecision6675 what issue are you experiencing?
@@lowvis7413 i blew a radiator hose a few months ago. replaced it and the tstat. went to use my heater today and it only blows hot air for a couple of seconds then gets cold. also it stays on vents. will not change to defrost.
Exactly what I need to do... thank you for your help.
I dont like how they made the resorvoir and radiator closed on these models
Mine sprays like a fountain. seemingly no air bubbles, coolant warm so thermostat should be open. no heat. My guess is clogged heater core? anyone?
Did you do it when its cold
Did you ever higher this out I’m having the same problem
Try a $25 thermostat first. 30 minute job with the refill. That's alot better than paying a shop $150 to "diagnose" and tell you your thermostat is likely bad.
@@IxSkiddlesxIdid you get the problem figured out?
lame
Very lame, yet it's got 44k views and you even took the time to comment on it. Thanks for dropping by!
What belt size did you use? And would this work on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 overland?
Hey, I think it should. If it looks like this you'll be fine. I have an 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. This video was a lifesaver, but I'm sad he never responded with the belt length. It's very important to remove the pulley from the compressor or else the belt rubs against the bottom. That was a nightmare for me, but it was burnt to crisp so it took lots of wd40 and whacking to get it off (and the snap ring sucks too). The belt I used was from O'Reilly, MasterPro K060832. It is the 83 3/4" length (took me 6 belts to figure it out). It can be done! mine looks just like the video and runs fine (at least so far). Hope this helps!
Sorry, I have a bad habit of tossing stupid videos up and never paying attention to the comments. IIRC, stock belt is 87.6", the bypass is 4 inches shorter at 83.6"
@@troy.s what was the dayco belt part number? Or whatever belt it is?
I have this engine in my Jeep and the A/C compressor went out on me last week. I was fixing to replace the compressor with a pulley, but I see I can just get a shorter belt and bypass it. What is the length of the serpentine belt that you put on this? Thanks!!
Very help me! Thanks!!! it's so quick!!!
From 4.0L to 4.7 v8 ? ... what transmission you use and what about the wiring?
No... broke 4.7 w/249k to used reman 4.7 w/12k miles on it.
what size of hex key did you use for the valve? I have an 01 wj, I did a flush and none of my keys SAE or metric fit. all too small or too big. this is blowing my mind I was told its a 8mm but 8mm is too big, 7mm too big, 6 too small, and 1/4 too small and 5/16 too big. this is blowing my mind i have my jeep sitting waiting for coolant as i type this
Pretty sure it's 8mm from the factory. IIRC, I had to hammer mine to get it to fit.
@@troy.s thanks, i dont know what was up with it, but yes it is 8mm, so I took the 8mm hex, took my grinder and shaved off a mm on a few sides and then it fit in . but it was too tight(probably factory seal still-past owner did barely any maintenence) so i smacked it around to bore it to one size larger so I could fit my 5/16 socket in and then used a breaker bar on the ratchet to get it to spin. I cant believe the effort I had to put to pull that screw, but finally finished the flush haha!
right at 1:46...how did you copy the 11 circles? That part happened to fast without enough explanation. HOW???????
Ctrl while moving
@@troy.s, Ctrl while moving and type x11 and Enter
I lost my bleed screw where can I find one to replace my original.
I've now lost 2 of them and going to salvage yard to get 3rd.
right at 1:46...how did you copy the 11 circles? That part happened to fast without enough explanation.
After copying with move tool (M > Ctrl), direct type in "xN" which N is the number of copy including the one you just copied. Example: Click on object, press M, move in the direction, press Ctrl to make copy move, input the distance you want, press Enter, input x3, and then Enter to get 3 copies
What happens if coolant is leaking from out of the bleed screw with screw in place?
Try some high temp thread sealant. if that doesn't work, you'll need to pull the timing cover to either replace it or get the bleeder machined for a new plug.
May have to re-thread the cover. Shouldn't be a biggie. After the thread is clean, then try some sealant.
You're right about turning your heater on if your engine is over heating but as for opening the windows is a joke in a Dodge truck. I've replaced each window regulator in my wife's '03 Dakota just for each regulator cable to snap. They make them with cheap plastic parts that hold a cable with alot of tension. I wish I could replace them with a the gear ones but they won't work. I may make a trip to our local machinist to copy the parts with metal. But other than that totally agree.
Life doesn't get more EXISTING? What does that mean?
Hello Troy. Do you use a Sketchup Pro version?
Bubble viewer 19,580 here...Troy, while purging (bleeding) the air through this port is your radiator cap on tight?
I believe that as it bleeds you should be adding coolant to keep the radiator full, thus the cap would remain off.
Hello Troy, That was so quick I had to rewind it and watch it a couple of times. Thank you so much for answering that question, your way is much faster. I have posted your answer in the comments of my own video, Cheers One question:- When you selected the first row of holes you did not select the rectangle even though some of the edges were inside the selection box, how come?
When selecting, if you don't draw your marquee completely around an object, it will not be selected. Happy to help!
Ah Ha, what I noticed is you have a solid line when selecting so I watched again and you select from left to right to get the solid selection box. I've been selecting from right to left and get a dashed selection box. Anything that falls inside the dashed box is selected. Thank you for your help.
Troy, isn't overheating like 1/16 past the center mark on the temp guage???
Technically, perhaps... I don't know for sure. I've gotten mine quite hot on a few offroad trips, but compensate by cranking up the heat. If you're overheating, make sure your fan is operating correctly (mine is the hydro version, making regular fluid changes pretty much mandatory). If you have no other choice (long slow climbs), roll down the windows and crank up the heat. Uncomfortable for sure, but it makes a huge difference.
***** You can change fluid in the thermoclutch? Yep, no electric here either, besides a/c condenser.

I am relatively need to my WJ 4.7. Could someone explain why you would bleed air through this port as opposed to from the radiator cap? Please let me know, thanks!
The bleed port is the highest point in the cooling system. Unfortunately, there are plenty of other places where air gets trapped, so it might take a while (weeks? months?) to get it all out. I think Chrysler pulls a vacuum when doing the initial fill (hence the spring in the lower radiator hose to keep it from collapsing).
Troy Settle I am having an overheating issue after installing a new t-stat and I believe I bled all of the air out but I am starting to wonder if maybe I do have pockets of air although I do have heat and hear no sloshing around in the dash via the heater core... Any suggestions???
I need to order an allen keyset. but didnt want to spend a lot of money on a full set. Do you happen to know what size is needed? and if it's metric or sae? I assume SAE.
it's 8mm. just get the set, it's cheaper in the long run.
Good video. What size allen wrench fits the bleeder screw on the 4.7 engine?
Price 8 mm
Heat on or Off? Inside jeep
doesn't matter, coolant always flows through the heater core.
quick question, did you have a bleeder funnel?
You don't really need one , but if you want you can make one yourself ,out of a orange juice plastic container
this works the best thank you
How long this take?
Just a few minutes once you're up to temp. The bubbles actually won't stop, as the coolant is boiling in the engine block, releasing gasses. But once the big air pockets are taken care of, just seal it up and let it run. Additional air will purge through the reservoir.
FWIW, this was taken after replacing my radiator when the upper hose connector shattered. The engine did overheat, which lead to replacing the timing cover gasket a few months later. At that time, I flushed out all the green crap and switched over to Zerex G-05. Fast forward to this past August, we suffered a dropped valve seat. The right head grenaded when the rocker came down sideways on it's lash adjuster, dumping most of the oil all over a Walmart parking lot. After replacing the engine with a slightly used reman, I got to bleed the coolant yet again with some G-05. Moral of the story... do NOT let your engine overheat. Ever. You will drop a valve seat. Maybe not next week or next month, but eventually it will drop.
