MTH UP F-3 ABA freight version with grey trucks and no steam generator (comes that way from MTH), for use in freight service only. On the roofs, you will notice no steam generator vents or exhaust. Hauling a mixed freight of all MTH die-cast semi scale freight cars. It was a very heavy train, but the F-3's pulled them with ease. Some of the LED lights appear to be blinking (or pulsating), to th...

MTH Premier 4-6-6-4 Challenger released in February 2024 and acquired in May. This was the first time I ran it. Item 20-3895-1, purchased from Mr. Muffin's Trains. It has the excursion scheme with silver painted axle journals on locomotive and oil tender, (I like the removable smoke deflectors). But in our world of toy trains, she is hauling freight back in 1940's. She is a great runner and ver...

From 1996, MTH's first Premier Scale Hudson (3020LP or 20-3020-1). It's a Premier NYC Hudson with Proto 1 and still fun to operate. With a BCR battery replacement, the Proto 1 engine is a solid runner. I forgot to change the chuff rate (you can change in Proto 1 settings). Next time I run her, it will be 4 chuffs per revolution. I love the haunting sound of the whistle. It's pulling a mixed fre...

I always have been happy with MTH. Nice to see a new engine that has been put out. I have the first one in P1 upgrade to a P2. I still run it on the layout. The smoke unit still puts out a substantial amount of smoke. I have to keep fluid in it for about every scale mile.

I just sold my 1994 MTH Challenger, it was a great runner and it still used the PS1 system. With a BCR battery, these old engines still have a life of running and enjoyment. Many people say that your playing Russian Roulette with older PS1 boards going bad. NOT true, I run older engines all day for 6 hours on a museum layout pulling heavy loads. I still have my Rio Grande Premier Challenger from 1994 (MTH first engine). True, no command control but still fun to operate. I only sold it, as I got a very good deal on this brand new one. You can see it running a few months ago: ua-cam.com/video/HZOX15Yo2Eo/v-deo.htmlsi=tkvtJIU9jxp3X_ZF

This layout is beautiful!!! Everything about it. The lighting, scenery, the glass protections, and the track layout. It is so nice to see an actual prewar 700E operating on this beautiful layout, I'm so envious. I have a 1937 700e which has survived the zinc rot issue showing no sign of swelling, rot or growth. I was given this locomotive by my Father in the mid -1980's as a birthday gift because he got it in an estate sale , got it at a reasonable price and it needed work as in replacing missing parts. We went to the Fall York TCA meet in 1985 and found every replacement part (all original pieces themselves) from the likes of George T-Bolt and others who are gone now. I meticulously reworked that locomotive. We bought an original diecast steam chest and a solid brass replacement steam chest because it looked so good and I used it in place of the original though I kept the original as well. Nothing was repainted (except the brass steam chest). Motor brushes were replaced and lubed, gear box was opened up and cleaned with new grease going in. Remember, this is a 1937 model - no grease screw in the bottom. The last thing I did was replace the lubricator arm on the engineer side. These eighty seven year old locomotives stand up against and with the modern, highly detailed scale locomotives of today and so they should, they are the Grandfather model. AND, they will run even after several years sitting on a shelf or in storage. With these high-tech models, it's a game of Russian Roulette, it may, it may not operate without servicing. As I get older, I just want to see them operate. No bells, whistle or even smoke, just the clickety clack of metal wheels on steel or metal rails, very soothing to hear. This video warms my heart.

Thank you for the kind words. And also sharing your story. My 1938 Hudson is not perfect, I would give it a solid "8" out of 10. But as you can see, she is a great runner. I do not plan to run her allot, just once in awhile. I'm 62 years old and cannot see my prized Hudson sitting on a shelf for the rest of her life or my life. As long as we handle these old locomotives with care, they will be fine, enjoy them and run em'! Take care my friend..

Fireball409, this is a very old steam engine made by Mike Train House (MTH) in the early 90's and not made anymore. You can search eBay for a used one or sometimes a "mint" condition may come around, but not very often. There is one on ebay right now for 759.99 (used).

Frank: I loaded D.C.S. 6.1, and after that, my trains would never run again (and haven't). *I enjoyed near PERFECT operation "pre-update", and later I would learn that 4.2 cannot be "had" to reload*. So: Disheartened (amid no "fix"), I haven't looked at a train since ... ("just you guys"). It's amazing how I STILL read about all this (all the issues), and after those IDIOTS at MTH told me: "then just don't buy it Sir", I (again): NEVER went back. *IF you should know HOW I could ever get 4.1 back, tell me HOW sometime OK ? ... "Thanks for the kind thought Frank" !.

I have all three engine numbers 2903, 2912 & 2921, so I won't be spending $200 each to upgrade them to PS3. Their still fun to run the way they are. Thanks for looking.

Well here are 3 UP AC6000's with the 6000 HP engines original delivery units, the motors were from Duetz-MWM of Germany, these engines were actually rated at 6250 HP. The first batch delivered had the 4400 HP diesels. The engines in this video are the actual 6250 HP units. Sadly, all have been converted to 4400 HP. I know I'm going to catch Flack for this but every time I see a super layout like this all this time money and skill building this I have to say why didn't you just go 2 rail O scale? Same time to build same skills involved and if you got enough money to build this layout you could have built a 2 rail. Just my opinion can't see spending all that kind of money on 3 rail toys. If you got a couple of hundred thousand to spend on a car you come home with something exotic. You don't spend it on a Ford Escort. Nice video wonderful layout. I'll pretend it's 2 rail.

    • @RichardModelTrains777

No flack here and I don't feel insulted either. Yes, the 3rd rail looks bad and not used in the real world. There are many awesome 3 rail layout's around the country, probably many allot bigger and better looking or just as good looking (scenery wise) than 2 rail layouts out there. So why go with 3 rails then? The answer is long and a bit complicated... Lionel started down this path over 110 years ago. 3 rails reduced electrical shorts for kids playing with trains, you could make reverse loops, make an insulated track section and hook up a RR crossing flasher, or other accessory all without electronics that did not exist at the time. About 60 years ago, you had many kids that played with trains and grew up and got into collecting the trains they played with as a kid. Being that Lionel was the largest toy manufactured in the world for a period of years in the post WWII era, most train collections were Lionel 3-rail. These collectors spent huge sums of money to buy trains in "mint" condition or produced in low numbers that made them highly valuable. Many adult collectors will collect an entire Lionel catalog from say 1956 that they dreamed of owning as a kid and spend thousands of dollars and many years to fill their catalog. Many of these collectors that started their collections in the late 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's went on to build layouts with, you guessed it, 3 rail track. Many of these collectors have many, Lionel engines from the prewar (before WWII) and post war (after WWII) that all run on 3 rails. Today these collectors go on to buy modern engines and rolling stock and will buy something that can run on their 3 rail layout. Take me for example, I got into the hobby in the 90's while in my early 30's. So I could have started with 2 rail O scale, but started buying Lionel post war trains. I remember in the 90's people in 2 rail O scale either bought brass, or made their own and had very few engines/rolling stock from a few manufactures to choose from. Many were home made or modified 3 rail and many looked like crap (sorry). Many engines were Lionel 3 rail, converted to 2 rail, and details added that looked okay, but you could tell not original. Today it's a different landscape. You can buy 3 rail engines that transform to 2 rail right from the manufacture! Rolling stock that comes with 3 rail trucks and can convert to 2 rail down to Kaydee couplers. So what do we collectors with vast amounts of older Lionel engines/ rolling stock from the post war era do? We keep buying 3 rail. There is no debate, the 2 rail trains are more realistic. I am in a position that I can always revert to my HO roots, as I have a vast collection of Athearn, Proto 2000, Atlas engines and rolling stock that has also been run on my now defunct closed HO club days, and was once run on a world class HO club San Diego museum layout. The moral of the story... Different strokes for different folks. Thanks for looking.

@@RichardModelTrains777 thank you Richard didn't expect anyone would get back to me. I understand everything you're saying and I know exactly why the three rail is so popular. Tell you the truth a few years ago I almost went that way myself. Just couldn't bring myself to do it LOL you're talkin to the same guy that couldn't get over when Ford made the change from the original Mustang either. I think the word for that is anal LOL you guys have a beautiful layout seriously. I grew up in Stratford Connecticut my dad was an investor in Gilbert in New Haven so I grew up with American Flyer. If I was going to get back into it it would be S gauge. Thanks for taking the time to get back to me wishing you and yours happy holidays keep making those videos thanks again.
