Every great project starts with a plan, so I began by sketching out the design of the knife on paper. With the design in hand, I moved on to cutting the knife out of a steel plate using a 4-inch angular grinder. This required careful handling and precision to ensure the basic shape was just right.
After cutting, the knife needed to be smoothed to remove any rough edges. Using a bench grinder, I worked on smoothing the entire surface, preparing it for the detailed work ahead. To achieve perfect balance, I drilled a hole in the center of the knife, crucial for a throwing knife to ensure it flies straight and true.
Next, I took a file and meticulously smoothed the four edges of the knife, focusing on precision to ensure each edge was even and ready for sharpening. With the edges smoothed, I drew lines on the knife to guide the edge-making process, serving as a roadmap to keep the edges consistent and sharp.
Using the angular grinder again, I carefully crafted the edges of the four blades, requiring a steady hand and attention to detail to ensure each blade was sharp and symmetrical. To fine-tune the sharpness, I used a file to sharpen the edges, aiming for the perfect edge that would make the knife effective and precise.
Once the edges were sharpened, I smoothed the entire knife with a file, preparing it for polishing and ensuring a flawless finish. Polishing was a multi-step process, starting with 60 grit sandpaper and gradually moving up to 1000 grit. Each stage of sanding removed imperfections and brought out the knife's shine. For the final touch, I used a buffing pad to give the knife a mirror-like finish, enhancing its appearance and ensuring it's smooth to the touch.
Finally, I reveal the completed 4-blade throwing knife in all its glory. Watch as I demonstrate its sharpness and precision in action, showcasing the results of this detailed crafting process.
