Steve's Gravel Pit Poetry
Приєднався 18 сер 2006
I'm a Canadian poet who grew up lumberjacking, sitting around fires, wandering in the Canadian bush, and reading poetry. These days I want my kids to enjoy poetry like I did, and I want to keep enjoying it myself - so here I am reading it. For all of you stopping by I want you to ask yourself, when a concert ticket is $500 a pop why not pick up a book and try reading some poetry instead? If a guy like me with a voice straight out of a truck stop can do it, so can you.

Shropshire Lad XXVIII "The Welsh Marches" by A.E Housman, read by Stephen J.N. Bauhart

Poetry reading - poem: Wales, conflict, love, hate, history, recital.
XXVIII
THE WELSH MARCHES
High the vanes of Shrewsbury gleam
Islanded in Severn stream;
The bridges from the steepled crest
Cross the water east and west.
The flag of morn in conqueror's state
Enters at the English gate:
The vanquished eve, as night prevails,
Bleeds upon the road to Wales.
Ages since the vanquished bled
Round my mother's marriage-bed;
There the ravens feasted far
About the open house of war:
When Severn down to Buildwas ran
Coloured with the death of man,
Couched upon her brother's grave
The Saxon got me on the slave.
The sound of fight is silent long
That began the ancient wrong;
Long the voice of tears is still
That wept of old the endless ill.
In my heart it has not died,
The war that sleeps on Severn side;
They cease not fighting, east and west,
On the marches of my breast.
Here the truceless armies yet
Trample, rolled in blood and sweat;
They kill and kill and never die;
And I think that each is I.
None will part us, none undo
The knot that makes one flesh of two,
Sick with hatred, sick with pain,
Strangling-When shall we be slain?
When shall I be dead and rid
Of the wrong my father did?
How long, how long, till spade and hearse
Put to sleep my mother's curse?

"The Magic Word" written and read by Stephen J.N. Bauhart
Got my copy of the book today. I'm looking forward to reading it.
That's awesome to hear. This is my first collection so I really have no idea how it will go. Two things... First, if I stop posting readings here for a while, I probably have a cold and I'm finding those those take my reading voice out for several weeks. Second, if you find a favourite poem (or poems) in the collection, drop a comment and I'll give them a read when I can. Oh, and, if you feel it warrants it, leave a review on Amazon. Enjoy the reading Edward! Steve
Cuando yazca tirado en la cubierta, solo yo sabré si conduje mi nave hasta buen puerto
Read with much discernment, with terrific timbre of voice. Bra--vo, friend!
Thanks Christine! Funny thing is, the last comment I received on my voice itself was that it wasn't well suited for poetry. But, I've improved a lot since then and I'm really enjoying doing it. Keep an eye on my channel if you enjoy my readings. I'm down with a head cold right now, but I try and do several readings a week.
You've a proper pen, and knowing. This is wonderful, wise and well to present to a sere world.
Ah, a poet with meter owning. Well written, well spoke. I would love to see the text, and read more of your work. Many dots connect; we could talk if you've the time.
Hey, thanks - it's always nice to hear your work is being enjoyed. I mean, I'd be happy to talk, but you might be disappointed. I'm just a fellow who scribbles his thoughts - if I have insights, they're usually coming out in the poems more than anything else. Also, every poem will have the words of them in the description. If you want to see more of my work, this playlist is all my stuff: ua-cam.com/video/Z-rB_9d7_Hw/v-deo.html And I'm releasing a collection of poems later this month if all goes well. Thanks for the comment. I enjoy writing, and I'm glad someone else enjoys it. If you want to talk about any poem, just comment and I'll tell you what you want to know.
Damn... This is my first reading that has received more dislikes than likes. I thought I did pretty well with it. Any feedback on what didn't work with this one?
this is best one bro
Thanks. I'm pretty new at reading, so I never really know what works and what doesn't. It's always great to hear whether something worked - or when it didn't.
What all men know, but none have seen Where all men go, but none have been 👏
Yeah, I like that part too.
This is a good one!
Thanks! It's always a bit worrying when you're trying to do one of the most famous poems in the English language...
For anyone who enjoyed that check the rest of my page out. There are over 100 poetry readings on Steve's Gravel Pit Poetry and even two more Wordsworth poems, and likely more to come.
This is such a beautiful work, so glad this was recommended to me.
Thank you so much Phoenix! Wasn't sure if either the poem, or the reading, would be to anyone's taste. Feel free to look around - I'm coming up on a hundred recordings now. And, if you think the work is good, feel free tell some friends!
I love this so much! I've been going back to it quite a few times now and thought I'd drop a comment :D Its really stuck with me! Probably one of my favourite poems to date, an absolute gem and I'm so glad I somehow found it!
That is so nice to hear - thank you! I will say, if you like that one, it's actually the second sonnet in a five sonnet sequence. I've created a playlist for that whole sequence. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/Z4tuVAwiR6k/v-deo.html If you're interested in the inspiration for that, read the description. It's a response to some ideas from Friedrich Nietzsche, and I include a passage on there. Lastly, if you enjoyed, spread the word. I've only been at this recording thing for two months but I love it, and I think I'm improving. Would love to get more people checking out my work :) But, seriously, thanks. I've spent a long time writing with no feedback - that my work is reaching people is lovely to hear.
@@SJNB_GPP Thank you so much, I've been going on a little listening spree hahaha. I really, really love your style, every single one I've listened to has got me thinking and feeling - and I have already been sharing some of them with my mates haha. I was so shocked when I saw how few subscribers you have! Your writing is beautiful and I'm sure that eventually people will start finding you :)) please don't ever stop uploading, I can't wait to see what you'll write in the future :D
@@dracculent4061 Hey, I just wanted to thank you again. As a small time, obscure writer (and I guess now UA-camr) you're always wondering if anyone actually likes what you're doing. It means a lot to hear someone say "Yeah, this is great!" For your knowledge, I'm keeping what I consider to be my best work off of here - for now. I'm submitting it to journals and stuff, but eventually I'll get it all up here. Until then, I'll keep reading the poetry that made me love poetry - with the odd poem of mine up there. I wasn't planning on putting much of mine up this week, but I recorded one that I just wrote and put it up - it'll come up in about an hour. Not my best, but I hope you enjoy. Anyway, thanks again! Yeah, I wish my subscriber count was higher, but nobody owes me their time. I'll just have to convince them that stopping my Steve's Gravel Pit is a good way to spend a few minutes ;) Have a good day! - Steve
This was a very experimental reading. Let me know if it sounds terrible and I'll try it again in a profile that comes a bit more naturally.
For anyone watching this, this was actually a rush recording for Mother's Day because it's my mom's favourite poem - or, so she told me decades ago. I have a much better recording of it here ( ua-cam.com/video/wj2ZVtfTxG4/v-deo.html ) that I've done since then - or, at least, I think it's better. Honestly though, I was still learning the microphone even in the second one, so I think this will eventually need another re-record. Thanks for the views, in any case!
Alternative title: "Damned Kids!"
I'm glad people seem to like this one, but I actually think my reading for it is kind of flat. Any requests for me to do a re-record sooner than later? I will eventually, but it's not top of the list right now.
For the first half, Bukowski's reading can't be beat, he knows how to be insensitive and mean. But the second half, talking to the bird, yours is the best I've heard; you sound so vulnerable.
Thanks! I'm pretty new at this so I think I have a lot of room to improve, but it's great to hear that I'm hitting some positive notes. Personally, the O'Bedlam reading is my favourite of the ones I can find. ua-cam.com/video/HVdpfhsj6uI/v-deo.html
Oh hey, also... If you do enjoy what I'm doing here, sharing would be a huge help. Would love to get more ears on my material.
Keep it going, I look forward to a daily poem or two
Hey thanks, love to hear it! I have two little kids so there will be days I don't, but I just blew a big chunk of money on a fancy microphone so my wife will kill me if I stop now. Keep checking back and I'll keep doing more readings! Also, I had an old buddy named Eddie Porter. Did you grow up on an orchard, by any chance?
Excellent!
Thanks Strider! I have a ton of room to improve but I'm getting quite pleased with some of my readings. Going to keep at it - it's such a fun way to engage with poems I've loved for years!
Great poem!
Thanks Joel! It's Prairie Crocus season here and I'm bringing my daughter up to the big park in the city to check them out each weekend until they're gone. I kind of have an attachment to these little wooly purple fellas ;)
horrible poem from the morbid-minded
Housman is 95% sad, bleak, or morbid, but at least this one has a bit of a dark and depraved sense of humour about it ;)
Maybe give Flower Pot a try? It's a positive one.
Wonderful
Hey, thanks. It's always quite nice to hear someone enjoys something you wrote.
