Curriculum Maps for Elementary General Music
For the Upper Elementary vocal improvisation, do you ever find it a hard jump from echoing to improving? I find that my kids freeze once it's time to stop echoing and make up their own thing.
Sometimes, yes! That's where the scaffolds at 8:22 can help. :)
Thank you so much for this and all your lessons! With all sincerity, your channel redeems the internet. 🙂
During the 'echo/improvise' exercise, are you asking the kids to reply all at the same time (which I imagine sounds chaotic) or are you calling on them one at a time? I teach at a school that caters to kids that struggled mightily at public school - ADHD, PAD, anxiety, etc. They can be amazingly creative, but cripplingly shy when it comes to 'performing' solo in front of anyone.
Amazing question, I should have mentioned this - Everyone improvises all at the same time :) It's chaotic in a beautiful way. After some whole-group improvisation, we can open up for solos for people who volunteer.
Beautiful!
Wonderful video! I always like hearing how other educators start using the bar instruments. I'll be using the book 'Mortimer' by Robert Munsch while students play in the direction of the words. Also, @Victoria, I'm very interested in the pencil grips which hold the mallets. What did you use to stick them to the wood? Do you have a link for pencil grips?
Wonderful guide- just what I needed! I will be borrowing your signals immediately. Thank you Victoria!
Hey that's great to hear! Thank you for watching :)
Love your signals and pencil holders. If I can just repair the few posts that have broken, I will be dusting these off now that I'm back in PK-5 this year. I also have a rope that needs to be nailed in, but that might take a little experience to repair.
Thank youuuuuuu!
Love this. Could you give us a list of her favorite song games that she mentions towards the end. Several of them are in foreign languages and it's hard to find online by just guessing at spelling!
Hello! Black Snake Agua de Limon Zinyama Redu Who Stole my Chickens and my Hens? Apple Tree Doggie Doggie Round a Doobop Cha Tsubo Bump Up Tomato Soy una Serpiente Chickens and Foxes Grizzly Bear Bluebird Bluebird Oh Who Are You? Plainsies Clapsies Son Macaron Highland Gates
In your experience, is it better to teach chord theory (Major/ Minor, built in thirds, the role of harmony) before, after, or during teaching Ukulele? Next school year my 4th Graders are studying Jazz unit 4 and I want to teach Ukulele and harmony unit 3 so students have a basic understanding of chords as chords are so important to Jazz (12 bar blues, etc) but am not sure if I should teach chord theory before, during, or after ukulele?
Completely untrained music teacher here, so forgive any ignorance in my question. 😕 I see a lot of videos using non-English songs, such as the one you use here. If I'm teaching a native English-speaking class, wouldn't using a Spanish song give the kids even more to concentrate on, thus adding to their potential confusion? What's the reasoning behind using foreign language songs with an English-speaking class? Thanks so much for your videos. They've been enormously helpful!!
Hello! Beautiful question, I'm so glad you asked this. I completely agree that we want to teach one new element at a time. In this case, Pajarito Tan Bonito would be a known song that we would introduce with the singing game first. The new material would be the C chord, layered on top of the known material, the song. For many students in America, Spanish is not a foreign language :) For students whose home language is English, these are still simple songs - children's songs - that English-speaking students are very capable of learning. You may be surprised at how quickly they pick it up! Sometimes adults are more trepidatious than kids about singing outside English :) Does that all make sense? What do you think?
My students love Jenny Jenkins. I am excited to try Aiken Drum and Buckeye Jim. Thank you!
Love these videos! I'm happy I found you!
I love this song! AWSOME song next you should get friends and do the Alabama gal dance!!! Please do it ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm starting an Orff Ensemble at my school this year, so this video could not have come at a better time! Love Josh's stuff.
He is the best! Thanks for watching
Excellent content. Thanks for this!

Thank you for these nuggets about assessment! I remember watching this video some time ago and it helped me to understand what I needed to work on with assessment. I like that you acknowledge that you are still a learner and I'm interested to see where your thoughts lie on assessment now. Lately, I've been finding that assessment is most flawed when my goal is to only assess skills. I've done a bit of reading on concept-based curriculum and have found that when I can assess understanding of concepts (based on skills) then students are able to better make connections and transfer their learning. One thing I am still working on is making assessment of understanding manageable when seeing hundreds of students per week. I think this is where deciding on what's most important to assess comes in and really laying out curriculum so that it spirals. Thanks again for all your nuggets of information!!
Immensely valuable. As a professional composer recently "roped" into teaching at local preschool & elementary schools (long story), your videos have been a godsend. I can't thank you enough!
Where can I find the Repertory List and can you write out the syllables you use for quarter, half, whole dotted half, eighth and 16th notes, please. Thank you. I have done this same type of planning for years of teaching, but have never seen it put together this way. I have had to write my own music theory for elementary students from scratch and this has been helpful to know that I have always been on the right track. The challenge is finding music and activities for each concept. I have had to come up with all of this on my own. So this has been helpful. I am hoping to improve my curriculum as I teach through my scope and sequence that I have created. My situation is that I only see my students for 1 day a week, but for a whole hour.
Fantastic! Just discovered you today. I look forward to seeing all of your work!
Thanks for watching!
Super helpful for getting me into my teaching and planning mindset for the beginning of school. Thank you!
I love your activities. How do you maintain your voice when teaching all day. I teach 5 (one-hour) blocks. By the end of the day (Kindergarten) my voice is very tired.
Hi! That is certainly a lot! Here's a conversation about vocal health that can help: ua-cam.com/video/PA0ST9wllbw/v-deo.html
Chords to "I've Waited All Day to See You" First half ("I've waited all day"): I V I / I V I Second half ("But now that you are here"): vi IV / vi V I

Do you have the name games as a separate document that is for purchase?
Hey John! These are all inside The Planning Binder, and currently I don't have them up as a separate product.
@@VictoriaBoler Thanks.
The kids would love to play the drum for the ladder song what's easy for them if they are fourth and fifth
For the first day, the teacher can play the drum. After that, if you want to do the rhyme in later classes, students can play a steady beat :)
The chords pls❤
The chords to the first half of the song are: I V I I V I In the second half of the song: vi IV vi V I
I love your videos , can you make a video for ukuleles beginners how to strum and make nice sound
