Round 15 1993 Hawthorn v Fitzroy - AFL Replay.
Strangely enough narrated by bob Harnett who was more recognisable in WA sporting circles
South were the real fairytale story of 1970. Had some stars like Skilton, Bedford, Rantall, Pitura etc but Saints had a very strong even team also. In my 60 years of attending footy, this is the only game I ever went to that didn't involve my team.
American who learned of the game in the late 80s but didn't get to see Bulldog in his prime. Being that Fitzroy is STILL my AFL club of choice, it's amazing to see this footage of what made him a great player. It's a shame that the package isn't longer, though.
Bond was a criminal con man.
The Bulldog always went in hard and had a go.
Classis Geoff Raines goal when he was in his prime at the Tiges. Twomey's was a great running goal in the wet. Superboot was an absolute classy champion. Robertson and Kennedy looked like twins. Nice goal by the Cats.
Geoff Raines' goal was pure class, but David's goal was a massive effort in those conditions, so I think the decision was totally correct.
casual 75m+ barrel on the run. Amazing skill level.
Started following footy in 1971 so I saw some of Murray's later years on TV replays, he was tough, fair, skillful, one of my all time favourite non Collingwood players. Seeing interviews and profiles on him he was a person to be respected, an elite footballer who could be looked up to on and off the field
Great player.
Barry Davis vs Murray.Who was the better player?
He's underrated. If he kicked liked Skilton he would be rated higher.
Both teams fell badly and did not recover until the late 80's
Both teams were unlucky not to have made finals during the mid-1980s. Collingwood did make the finals in 1984, making the Preliminary Final. On the other years, Geelong just missed out of finals in 1984, 1985, 1987 & 1988. In 1987 they should have made the finals, but lost games unexpectedly to one or two bottom teams. Collingwood just missed out of finals in 1983, 1985 & 1986, & missed out because of inconsistency.
No expense spared with the studio set at the ABC🥴
Didn't know that famous Bosustow goal was early on when Geelong were up 2 goals to 0. Makes it feel even more significant than I realised.
Was this the game when Garry Sidebottom missed the bus?
That was the following week for the Preliminary Final against Collingwood.
3 great goals in the final quarter won it for the Magpies
I played in that game for the old Roy's.we was robbed.
Collingwood went on to lose the Grand Final. Another loss in their drought. Surely that sting in the tail alleviates any hurt feelings. But this loss was an important loss. Peter Moore throwing his runners up medal away ended participation awards and sympathy medals. GO PIES!!!
How did Bernie’s second last not win??
Yeah, that was a monster!
Growing up watching the footy in the 70s and 80s we always hated the Ghost. In every interview I've ever seen from him since he retired he seems like a really nice bloke.
From one-eyed hill at the other end, I thought he threw it downwards, and it accidentally hit Sutcliffe’s leg. Now I realise it was a deliberate of disdain.
what a match! one of the best of the 80s
Totally agree with you. Arguably it was the best match of the 80s.
The Buzz. Geez, what a player he was in this era.
What a player
Superstar
@ Pete?
Change the rules back to 1979 rules.
Good job, although I was only 5 at the time, Carlton was the team to beat in 1981.
Dons had won 15 straight before N Daniher did his knee in Rd 21 and they wooda remained undefeated for a long time if that never happened. Carlton was also very lucky to avoid ,Fitzroy, who clearly had their measure.
And Collingwood would have won after being on top of the ladder most of the year before getting injuries and colliwobbles. @hanajinks1044
@hanajinks1044 Exactly spot on mate. Essendon & Fitzroy both were extremely unlucky in 1981. In fact the Top 5 ladder finishers in 1981 were extremely even.
@@hanajinks1044 Wooda, coulda, shoulda....
Barham's was easily the most difficult.
Sam Newman getting polaxed by Mick Malthouse!
Im always in tears when i watch this, this is one of Australians biggest sporting moments every
I'm currently listening to 1980 Tim Lane calling the footy and 2024 Tim Lane calling the cricket at the same time! Love it!
Brilliant stuff Rhett, doing Gods work
BOSUSTOW!!!
Geez that beretts
Who knew 7 years later brad would go on to win 3 premiership with Geelong
How’s the state of the goat track? Didn’t they have groundsman back then?..🤪😂🤷♂️
ABC being contrarian here methinks.
Bernie Quinlan with a stab torpedo....
Buzz #2 Bernie #2
I like Jess but not a good thing for the poor pig
This show was just an Australian ripoff of the Tonight Show with David Letterman. I'm surprised it actually ran for 4 seasons (1990-1993), last longer than I thought.
*Late Night with David Letterman
Those red shorts look great, great memories of VFL park
Go Dons!
What happened to the full tapes of these games ? - this is the first time I have seen footage since 1980 …..
A bit weird watching Bruce McAvaney mention Rugby League. What's also interesting is that this programme was produced out of Sydney as Graeme Hughes was in the studio but appeared outside what looks like Stadium Australia.
I bought a ticket for cost price ( around $25.00 I think) off an Essendon member who had been gifted a better seat.I joined the EFC at the start of the 1985 season. What a wonderful time to be a Bomber supporter.
Some great stuff by Rob Wiley, what a great player he was.
Some things don't seem to have changed 😅 Greece on fire, government ineptitude and contradiction, various wars...
Timmy and Tosca always travelled First Class
I remember this match quite well. Geelong were unbeaten at the time, having won their first 7 matches of the season. They were raging favourites to continue their recent dominance over Richmond. But the Tigers had other ideas. The Cats eventually got their revenge over the Tigers at this venue 7 years later with a 157 point demolition that set an all time record highest score kicked at this stadium which still stands today.
I bet 24 years later Crocker would've of thought he would be coaching womans football
I love Timmy ❤
