Great video, Gabe! Informative and really fun!
Glad you enjoyed!
Another big misconception is you have to have a fast car with a lot of horsepower. But this goes along with your point about speed compared to lap times. A good example is a little over a year ago I was doing a track day, intermediate group, in my modified E36. I was watching the advanced run group. And was completely amazed watching a Cooper S completely destroying guys in zr1's and GT3 Porsche. I know part of it is he had that Cooper set up perfectly for that track, but mostly because he was that good. He was driving it at 99.9% on every inch of the track.
Must have been a beautiful sight! And yea, horsepower is really irrelevant when you’re racing in level playing field. Then it’s all about racecraft, car setup, strategy, etc.
Dude is a potted plant on NGS live streams.
🌱
Great video! Dropped right on my lunch break. I think one I'd add is the planning that has to go into racing. Being mostly a "one man crew", it's as much about logistics (managing the car, it's setup, and it's health on and off the track) as it is a driver game. If you neglect either, you're going to be slow, or not on the track at all. You get really good at "figuring shit out", because something is always breaking.
Love this one. So true. Reminds me I might be neglecting one of those right now 😬
Eye opening, keep em comin ked!
Thanks mench!!
Right now i am in the 10th grade. I have 4 years of school before i can go to a race school. And im doing it, my mom is not the biggest fan but I honestly dont care at all. This is my dream and my life so
Go for it! In the end, you’ll regret not trying.
@ yea i think i might take this seriously. Really want to get into gt3, school will cost 14k or 140000kr where im from but i thinks its worth it. And its far away, and i want that so i can be alone and reset if tou know what i mean
they have this track as a mod in assetto corsa not easy to find but was able to track it down on internet search or i put a link in a video showing it on my channel.can restrict the intake on the kart mod and add some kilos and the rotax is similar to the k1 electric at circuit
Didn’t realize this. Thanks!
Traction circle is a good way to augment what you talk about here.
For sure. I wanted to simplify it for non racers in a way that made sense for me, but traction circle would be a great concept for those folks!
What was pole position time ?
@@TracyDotson-p5p I think they were around 78 or 76 seconds? I recall being a good 4 seconds off pace.
3:14 I spent 400€ for my simgear, I've 15 years of experience in simracing. Actually I don't know what's happened lastly that a Logitech G-series is considered a toy, by people playing F1 by codies. Ah, clever, that ultraexpensive stuff got to be publicized. And surely are not 5000 per year, a simgear is something that lasts
@@mattiapresti7295 yes true, more like some time $5k than per year
One of the things that annoy me most are kart drivers with their magnesium rims and ultrasoft wheels saying that you need 7k for a kart. May a kart not be a spaceship? Back in time karts were more similar to carts, and this is what they should be
Well damn 😮
Yea…
I love the channel, I just found you and am binging your videos. I too have that itch to embrace Motorsports but I clearly have so much to learn. 👌🏻 keep up the good work, you found yourself a new subscriber
I appreciate it! I’m learning every day and still feel like I’m only scratching the surface 😄
@ good luck and thanks for documenting your journey
Thank you for making this video, Gabe, I dreamt of racing cars my whole life but just thought it's never gonna happen because it takes money I don't have, you changed my mind
That's awesome! What are you going to try first?
Great race and nice overtakes! When you’re going for fast laps, are you braking or just lifting
@@drummermike89 thanks! For fast laps, I only lift, never brake here. A decent to well handling kart doesn’t require any brake to get around corners at this track. Poor handling karts might, but those won’t be fast laps.
Worthy of the last lap 😂 what a season
Fantastic last lap :D Thanks man!
Great timing to find this video - getting a race license in a couple months, still haven't picked exactly what series to race after that. Got rid of the excuses, the self doubt is a little harder to deal with. Thanks for sharing this :)
@@GardigoRacing congrats! Getting the comp license will unlock all the possibilities. And yea, that self doubt is a pesky one.
Just found your channel, really appreciate you sharing your journey!
@@GardigoRacing heck yea, thanks for watching!
Yeah real racing is strange in that it's both easier and harder than sim racing. Easier because the car is talking to you a lot more and you can better understand how to drive it, but harder in that it's massively uncomfortable due to the heat and physicality/endurance needed to drive a car that hard for so long.
@@MoptopTofer agree! Plus the massive added risk in real racing makes it juuust a bit tougher
Have to be able to feel/sense grip. Not an easy task.
@@ronbelanger4113 absolutely. I think it’s both a talent and a skill.
Most sports car are just bad and unstable as you can see in this video. The car needs to be very stable and predictable at the limit.
Where did you draw that conclusion from?
@@gabeorlowitzracing I started reading about sports car from a young age, then started watching videos with pro commentary, then I did my own testing on track for years. Just look at the body movements and how sudden and quick you lost control you can't push hard because it quickly becomes unstable.
I've only been doing sim racing but it's already obvious from it that racecar driving is not at all like driving to work or even to drive fast on the Autobahn. I once did about 180km/h on the Autobahn and as the road turned a little bit I felt somewhat of a tyre slip, like the I felt the tyre changed shaped a little bit under power. It was still nothing compared to what you feel even in a sim. Driving at race speed is like skating: you have grip until you suddenly don't and you're always almost like drifting between states of what powers are controlling your car. I imagine it's VERY physical in a real racing car and also scary when you cross that grip line for a split second.
Great comment! I like the skating analogy.
amkes me wanna go racing but im poor so thats too bad haha
You could start with arrive and drive karting and work your way up!
Very cool video. Big soccer guy but to me racing and fighting are the hardest sports not to mention that it’s life or death even when well prepared.
Thanks! There’s definitely a realness to racing that gives you no choice but to be fully alert.
Spinning rr tire. Have you had your car on 4 wheel scales? Might be uneven corner balance.
It was corner balanced at the beginning of the year. Turns out this was due to a (failing) open diff. I’ve since upgraded to the Miata torsen diff and puff, problem solved.
There is such a thing called "trying too hard". If you're goal is to always get better and even when you win you're not satisfied, you're being too hard on yourself. You talk about working at it and need to do more sim practice. This isn't your job it's your hobby. Try to make it fun. For me driving is the fun part that makes all the work worth it.
I do put a lot of pressure, but it’s because my ambitious goal is to make high performance driving my primary source of income. Therefore it’s not just a hobby to me. It’s a long term career shift. But either way, your advice is sound. Thanks.
Trust the process! There's so much to learn in this sport but if you keep at it, it'll begin to come together. Thanks for sharing your journey!
Good advice, thank you. I'm trusting!
Nathan is top notch!

@@gabeorlowitzracing Absolutely! Its probably my favorite track on the sim. thank you!
I use RaceChrono app for trackdays, a mobile app. Works really well for me, and might help you too
Good suggestion! I used the track addicts app for a few of these sessions, but forgot to mention that since it wasn’t a focal point of our coaching.
Great walkthrough, and thanks for showing the mistakes. I have the same project coming up, along with replacing the lower oil pan cover. I think I'll be measuring what comes out 😅
Thanks. Good luck! Definitely measure 😅
Hang in there Gabe. You’ve got all winter to work on your technique on the SIM. Also, thanks for share your notes on Thompson, I’m racing there next week for the first time.
Thanks and good luck at Thompson! My notes were specific to my Miata, tires, and my driving, so take it with a grain of salt as you enter the race.
I believe you need to be in the right head space to hire a coach and use the coach.
Agreed. I wasn’t in that headspace last year when I started racing (though I could’ve been if coaching felt more accessible at the time). This year was a different story. I craved it so bad!
Wow. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ where is this 😅😅
K1 Circuit in California
Enjoying the video smiling and nodding and then wait a second. I know that hill, I know that turn, I know that pit lane, I know that slightly curved downhill then uphill front "straight" into a blind left hander over a crest. That's Palmer! And then I was hooked. Great video! Keep it up.
@@asiegel87 you got it!
Okay... I don't want to go racing anymore.. you talked me out of it.
@@jaytroxel3495 bummer!
On top of the driving-at-the-limit game, you have the Racecraft -- that is, how do you get past other cars that really don't want to let you past? I raced SCCA Spec Miata myself, and to me that's the really fun part! 🥰🤪
That is true
6:57 Where would you say is the most ideal city/area to move to in the US?
Great question but tough to answer as there’s not one single best area. There are fantastic tracks around the country. New England is great because we have a lot of tracks within a few hours, but of course we have winters, and mostly smaller tracks. Florida has some iconic ones. Cali too. Austin has COTA. Depends if you want variety or just want to be near one track you love.
@@gabeorlowitzracingI was thinking Raleigh NC might be a sleeper pick. VIR is 1.5 hours away as well as a bunch of other tracks in NC and VA. Greensboro is home to a lot of racing teams as well. Also to the west you have the Appalachian mountains for scenic driving unrelated to racing. Thoughts?
@@ScatterVolt Good choices!
Great video. Thank you. Subscribed.
Appreciate it!
IMO the hardest part of this, by far, is the networking. As an introvert, you lost me at 'go somewhere and meet people'. I have no idea how that works 😂
I’m the same way, but I’ve generally found that people are quite approachable in the racing paddock. All you have to do is ask about their car and boom, you’re in a conversation. But step 1 is being where the racing is, then once you’re there, see what happens.
Every man thinks he is good at three things; building a fire, cooking on a grill and driving fast, most are only average at the fire and cooking and are horrible at driving fast. Driving a car on that edge of control is incredibly difficult, the margin for error is very nearly zero. Add another 20 or so cars driving along side you and the stress goes up exponentially.
Spot on!
Kudos to you Miata guys but I used to have BIG problems with you. As a "secomd" class to race with my GT2 Porsche 928 on scca race weekends I also entered ITE, which spec miatas ran in. They seemed so involved with each other and often were doing bone-head moves, ignoring the fact that there were others in the race, too. I even had one use me to make what he called a "bank-pass" on another one...rammed me intentionally to bounce off and get ahead of another one. You do give a good idea of racing. It's not a track day at all. The fast line through a lap....not as important as staying in front. Sometimes you sit on a leader and go easy while your tires come back, then make the pass at the right time. Even getting to the start, well prepared, that's not simple.
I don’t endorse the bone headed passing! Agree some SM drivers can be wild. Thanks for sharing your experience.
This video does an excellent job of explaining how racing differs from regular driving and the challenges it presents.
Thank you! That was my goal.
gave a whole new perspective. thanks!
My pleasure!
Every turn is about covering up your mistakes, gets worse with traffic. Flirting with the limit consistently is so hard
Hey Gabe, how do you rate your arai gp7?
No complaints, just wish it was more colorful
And how do we win? By staying consistently on that line, one thing you should have stressed is consistency without it there are no W's. The ability to consistently manage all the different things that are going on is the difference between a champion and a back marker. Other than that, great video.
Thank you Gabe for making these videos about your journey. Keep making videos and keep racing
I appreciate it!
While not wheel-to-wheel racing, still great place to start is auto slalom events. Cheap to enter, can use daily car for stock classes, very little chance of crashing and blowing your budget on day one. Another benefit is that you can organise one yourself for dirt cheap if there's nothing near by. You can even get a couple friends and share a car in some events.
Thanks for the input!
