Anchoring My Catamaran At The Sapona Wreck For The First Time
Переглядів 912 місяці тому
Anchoring is always a nerve-wracking task no matter how experienced you are (see Captain Lee swearing up a storm on Below Deck), and anchoring in front of a giant, rusting chunk of metal and concrete in a surprisingly swift current is a challenge for us newbies. The Sapona wreck is located just south of the Bimini Islands in the Bahamas, and it's a shallow water snorkeling must-see. We bring th...
Would You Get In The Water Here?

It's one thing to sail to the Bahamas in your sturdy, safe sailing catamaran, and it's another thing altogether to venture out on your tiny dingy with its 4 HP motor. But it's all about new experiences for us, so we went exploring Bimini for the first time on Safe Mode (she's Reboot's tender). I know, rationally, that stingrays are not dangerous to be in the water with, but my brain kept saying...

    Dolphins could really hurt him if they decided to. Even drown him. It would depend on his luck.. and the personality of those actual dolphins he encountered.

      @@RebootTheCatamaran I actually meant the dolphins with sharp teeth that you or I would refer to as sharks but a dog probably wouldn’t differentiate from a dolphin. I mean it’s grey and it’s in the water!

      He’s chased a deer far into the woods before, so I don’t know if he’d do the same with a dolphin. One of the scariest things ever to see your normally super obedient dog see a deer for the first time and decide he’s Rambo 😳

      I’m not gonna lie, I am afraid of sharks. There are precautions to take that keep him as safe from sharks as we are when we’re in the water (he’s never in the ocean without us). Certain times of day we don’t swim, and we check around the boat first for aggressive species like bull sharks.

      I think that the truth is somewhere in the middle. People anthropomorphize them and give them positive or negative human characteristics, but they’re really just big, smart wild creatures

      I’ve read that some fishermen have hurt dolphins that have taken their catch from a line, so not all dolphins feel positive towards humans (for good reason)

    That is a great improvement, great job! I am considering to cut my sofa, for a more rectangular sofa shape...looking forward to see if you are doing something "wild" to the sofa during the coming episodes...

    • @RebootTheCatamaran
      @RebootTheCatamaran 3 місяці тому

      Absolutely! A rectangular seating area is on the drawing board, I’m looking at making the seating area the same depth as standard outdoor cushions (22” x 22”, four across the back and three on each side) so I can easily and cost-effectively replace the cushions without having to do custom sewing.

    While the Aventura's are really interesting, I am not seeing any actual customer reviews, how they sail, how they hold up long term ( they have been about for a while now ). The pricing is incredibly attractive but without that knowledge of reliability, sailing ability and longevity it becomes really difficult to take them seriously. Especially in the current climate with the failings of modern leopards, lagoons, marsaudon/ORC etc etc.

    • @RebootTheCatamaran
      @RebootTheCatamaran 4 місяці тому

      I think it’s more a case of there aren’t a lot of them out there yet, and most catamaran customers aren’t UA-camrs, so I think it’ll be a challenge for them for a while. I look at catamarans like cities, not like cars, so for me “reliability” doesn’t come into play as much because each catamaran is so individual. We are hull 533 on our Lagoon 380s2, and we met hull 536 last month, and it is amazing how different the two boats are! They were likely on the line together, but the choices the original owners made and how they’d been cared for and upgraded over the years was SO different. From what I can see with the Aventura, they are making solid choices with the boat infrastructure like good furlers, sails, engines, so they should behave predictably for their build level, which I would say is equal or better than the big 3 are doing right now.

    I tried Lanolin and found it left an orange mess on the deck every time I brought the chain back in. Also, lanolin can effect the zink coating on the chain. Key is to rinse the salt off the chain after each use.
