NeverEngine Dev
Приєднався 29 кві 2024
I'm an Ex-Blizzard/-Ubisoft Engineer developing my own game engine from scratch after having worked in the AAA games industry for the past 10 years. Now finally I've decided to actually make a game with it.
I Was Laid Off From Blizzard - NeverEngine Devlog 0
Hey there! Thanks for checking out my first devlog where I take you through the journey of the development of my very own game engine, the NeverEngine!

You never did any work while on their time or equipment right? If so they may own it
Oh look, another one that reinvents the wheel...
I've always wondered how game engines were created this was really fun video to watch
Impressive 👍 You must be exhausted
Any VR capabilities?
Hey, did any of those companies have a clause in your contract saying they own everything you make on and off the clock? A lot of companies do, and if so, they may be able to seize your engine for themselves and sue you for using it.
That's a good question! It's very common for bigger companies to have those types of clauses, and so what I've done from the start has been to explicitly list my engine as an exception in the contract(s) to ensure that I wouldn't end up in the situation you're describing.
@@NeverEngineDev glad to hear it! It would have been super sad if some jerkweeds stole this from you. Good work so far, best of luck in your future endeavors!
Does it only support 3d game development or 2d also?
This is ridiculously relatable. Love it. Cant wait to see your project grow. Also, Blizzard laying you off obviously was a hardcore fumble on their part- great opportunity on yours. You’re gonna do great things I can already tell.
Will it support Linux? Or is Godot the only engine that is Linux first focus?
Damn this is exciting
Making your own engine is pretty rad, can't wait to see where this goes!
you tend to rhyme a lot, it sounds like rap at some points :^)
Its funny. I wasted the last 10 years making a compiler to make games in my own programming language and just recently released a game on steam. I don't really consider it a waste of time either since it gave me a reason to keep learning new stuff.
subscribed!
Wow the intro was VERY dramatic but as a fellow game developer I support your cause
Back in the day there were no game engines. You had to program everything from scratch. If you were lucky, or younger, you had compilers to help and you didn't have to write in machine code. LOL Ahh the good ol' dayz....it SOOO much easier now. LOL Kids these days have no idea. :\
You have a nice voice.
You can try to submit info on your engine when ready to @GamesFromScratch Channel might be of interest to that community. Hope to see more of this engine.
What was the best game engine in ur opinion that you have used. Was it unreal, snowdrop, or something else? I am not talking about ease of use.
Wow, are you planning to release this engine as Open Source or something? Cause so far now Unreal Engine is currently the only engine I can use because of its Blueprint System (I have mental issues when it comes to reading and writing) and it be great to know that there is an alternative engine I can use for any reason.
Hey, I'm still in the process of fully figuring out the open source aspect of the engine or not. I'm thinking that I might do something like it in the future, just have a few things I need to setup/get sorted before that!
I agree the music is a little loud. I hope you produce using average-sounding headphones rather than studio so you can have an idea of how your stuff will actually end up sounding to the user. Nobody really enjoys content with studio headphones so why would content be produced using them?
Fantastic work! I've considered hybrid/derivative ECS models for my own game engine work before. Thank you for sharing the links to the videos you referenced. As someone 6 months deep into writing a game engine, it's really inspiring to see what other (primarily) solo devs can do after 10 whole years! Subscribed and best of luck!
Funny. The way you realized about music being a passion and hobby... I realized the same with game dev just last year in 2023... I personally don't find it worth the suffering to make a living in this laughing stock mess of a gaming industry, much less even for freelance work. Not even surprised Blizzard gave you the boot. In fact, I am surprised you still managed to remain employed for a few more years up to Spring 2024 after the shenanigans that company did, even with the acquisition by Microsoft and exodus of devs leaving.
You do not sound Swedish for a former Swedish boy... Were you born in Sweden, yet raised in the USA?
Hahah, nah, fully Swedish, grew up in Mariestad and lived in Sweden until I was 23, then I moved to Canada, which is where I live currently
@@NeverEngineDev Then why is your accent so similar to a North American's instead of the typical Scandinavian's? Were you born abroad to Canadian parents or something?
Cool stuff man, sucks you got laid off ,but there's way more opportunities out there that are drastically better than AAA. AAA is not its all chalked up to be tbh imo.
so interesting !
so... you spent a decade to make a weaker Unity/Godot?
Does it onæy create 3D games, or also 2D games?
GIGANTIC ASS respect, man. This is epic.
good luck!
if everyone losses their job hu will be buying stuff?
I would love to work in this engine!
This is a really cool project, I look forward to seeing more devlogs!
Very interesting. Will keep an eye on this
cool engine, but if you are going to show it off on UA-cam could you make it less gray? :\
This is a great suggestion, I definitely have some ideas to make it a little bit more colorful and readable!
Fellow game dev here, just wanted to say that the movement in The Division 1 was my favourite part of the game! I adored the movement mechanics!
I'm really happy to hear that! It was something we put a lot of effort into and I had an amazing team of designers and animators that really deserve the bulk of the credit for it!
Good luck with your indie journey. It's something I have to postpone until I retire. What gapi do you use in your engine? Are you planning to ship on consoles?
I'm using DX11 currently, but I have ideas about supporting DX12/Vulkan at some point! I would like to ship on consoles as well, but it all depends on time and such!
Genuine question why make another C++ engine when there's already Unreal. If you're trying to make it easier to use why not just develop an Unreal Engine Plugin? If anything the only kind of game engine that's being sought for right now is one written in Rust to avoid memory crashes that Unreal and almost every C++ game engine is cursed with. Bevy (rust game engine) is open source and you could also be a contributor in it's development.
That's a great question, there are a few reasons, the first one being that I originally started working on this engine/project to learn about different programming disciplines. Then I started to get into the weeds of systems architecture and it's really difficult to make big sweeping changes in existing engines if you want to stay compliant with future versions of the engine as well. Then I find that the way that I've developed the engine I straight up have more fun working in NeverEngine than I do/would in any other engine.
I'm creating my own 2d engine in the odin language
I'm sorry to hear that you were laid off. It seems like it's happening throughout tech. I've been made redundant twice recently so I've been in similar situations. Your game engine looks fantastic! Can't wait to hear more about it.
good luck bro, god speed
AAA gaming is a flamboyant joke
Great journey! It would be amazing to also be able to script with a small and easy to learn script language like Lua. I wish you all the best and success with your engine and the devlog channel!
I was watching a video on UA-cam about server meshing, I was curious if your engine will ever have features based around implantation or the least option to be compatible with such a thing?
Sucks to hear you got laid off. But happy to hear you get the chance to do your own thing! I've been working on custom engines in my spare time and would love to get to a point where I can just make my own games full-time. Hoping it all works out!!
Holy shit! I've never seen anyone who knew about Kruger Entity Model. Cool devlog! Show those naysayers that it can be done! Looking forward to more videos. Make sure to show off that animation system.
My question and…hope…i suppose, is will it be open source at any point? Or do you intend to charge? Would be amazing to have more open source options, but I understand the need to survive.
Playing around with both ideas at this point and trying to figure out the best way of keeping the project going, and whatever that might look like!
With game engines as user friendly and advanced as unreal engine 5 out there I feel like designing new ones is a lost cause. I sort of compare the effort to building a new operating system. Sure it's entirely possible to build a better windows but when everyone is using windows, mac os or Linus, is it really worth the effort to build a new one in the hopes of getting a few interested users?
I can definitely see where you're coming from and if I were setting out to compete with Unreal or Unity, it would be a ridiculous undertaking. However, this whole endeavor started off as a way for me to learn about all the different aspects of game/engine development. And the main point of the engine right now is to have an environment where I have fun making games (hence why I'm now finally focusing on making a game, hahah). The hopes is also to get it to a point where other people can use it as well, but currently it's to help me make games faster and to be able to collaborate with others easily while doing so. I really appreciate the question and I hope that little ramble answers it as well! :)
The music is loud and repetitive, it made it hard to watch the video :(
You are awesome 🤩🤩🤩 I love it the video!
