      @@jeffw4698 Thank you Jeff...yes, in the verse...I can hardly get to the chorus...lol....I'll keep practicing...still learning very basic stuff, I only chose this song bcz my sister covers it with her band and it makes us think fondly of our dad. The other tunes I'm working on, along with teaching myself notes etc, are: Tore Down, Angel from Montgomery, Can't let Go, (Lucinda Williams) and Dreams, (FleetM)...couple easy ones and a couple that are more challenging. I really need to get the basic fundamentals down...it's a challenge for sure. I've never played an instrument, and I'm LEFT Handed....and I'm 53....old dog, new tricks as they say. thank again for replying to me. BB

    Jeff - I notice your playing root octave for the groove....is the end of a line fill D-E-G#slide A?

    • @401Blues
      @401Blues 3 роки тому

      oops meant R -5

    • @jeffw4698
      @jeffw4698 3 роки тому

      @@401Blues Right you are about the root-fifth groove! If I’m looking at the right fill then what I’m doing is D-A-C#-B-A (that last A being on the downbeat of the new verse and is the first note of our new verse) so essentially, thinking relative to our home key of A major, the fill is 4-8-3-2-1. The 4 because it’s the root of the chord we’re currently on, D, then the 8 because it’s the five of our D and also the octave of our root, and then continuing the line down from our root, D, takes us neatly back to the 1 just in time to hit the downbeat of the new verse. When possible I always try and keep a bassline leading stepwise to the note JW want to get to, with just enough notes that I don’t arrive early or late but hit the chord change right on the downbeat. If that wasn’t the fill you were talking about then let me know what time stamp the one you meant was and I’ll take a look :)

    Jeff I started learning this (Bertha) song today....as you instructed on other song lesson videos....I took it nice and slow...whole note roots....then 1/4 notes for the verses. Then again whole notes for chorus...then 1/4 notes...put it all together added a bit of rhythm and left hand finger mute to give it that bouncy shuffle fell. I was surprised in less than 2 hours ...I had a somewhat acceptable foundation for this song....can't wait to hear how I play it in a couple of weeks. Tennessee Jed uses similarly arrange cords, using whole and 1/2 notes and 2x the tempo. Beach Bum Basses

    Jeff you are a Godsend! I started playing the bass 5 months ago. Earlier this week I got my 8 song playlist for a Grateful Dead jam band. I Know You Rider, Bertha, and Fire on the Mountain were on the playlist. Thanks for showing me how to approach learning this songs... start with roots, add octave, triads, etc. Beach Bum Basses
