I love space. I love taking pictures of space and I have a couple of telescopes (which I love) to do that with. I'll upload some videos about taking pictures of space here, and hopefully you'll love that, too!
Antlia 3nm "Pro" Narrowband Filters - unboxing!
Watch me get excited about the brand new 3nm “Pro” Antlia filters! I’ll briefly take you through my journey into narrowband imaging before unboxing and fitting the Antlia filters into my filter wheel.

How to use StarNet++ on a Mac (If you don't have PixInsight)
Переглядів 8 тис.4 роки тому
This video runs Mac users through how to use StarNet if you don't have PixInsight. UPDATE FOR MONTEREY USERS, thanks to Capture the Atlas: It no longer works with these instructions. You'll receive a message blocking the script. Once you receive this message, pasting this command "sudo xattr -c *sh *so * " without quotations will work. Simply paste the command, enter, and you can add your file ...
My terminal is not working: "Debs-MBP-2:StarNetv2CLI_MacOS DeborahB$ chmod +x ./rgb_starnet++ chmod: ./rgb_starnet++: No such file or directory" - what is going wrong here?
Very good video, thank you very much. One question, do you have the Starnet v1 program for Mac? It is that version 2 does not work for me, since the operating system of my computer is old.
Good overview. Thanks!!
Link for the mac download doesn't seem to go to the download?Did it get removed?
Thanks for the heads up! I've put the new link for v2 direct download in place.
*Update Mac Monterey users: It no longer works with these instructions. You'll receive a message blocking the script. Once you receive this message, pasting this command "sudo xattr -c *sh *so *++" without quotations will work. Simply paste the command, enter, and you can add your file again.
Excellent, thank you! I haven't had a chance to test this out myself, but will pin the comment and add it to the description.
@@backyardspacedude4238 Thanks, hope it helps! ;)
Sorry, I'm not able to install it anyway. Once the command is pasted, the terminal says to me "zsh: no matches found: *sh". Any suggest?
Was hitting my head thinking why I didn't buy windows but then found out your video Thank you so much :)
Pleasure!
Sooo helpful❣️
Thanks for the info 👍🏻
No probs!
Excellent. Was looking for those terminal commands everywhere. You nicely provided a one stop shop! It's working now! Thank you
Glad to have helped! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks! Been using this on the PC, I will defo give it a go on my MacBook.
I cant get mine to work anymore, says "zsh: operation not permitted:" I've ran it on here before I'm assuming the Monterey update changed something. I've reinstalled and did the security settings, even ran the commands chmod +x ./rgb_starnet++, chmod +x ./run_rgb_starnet.sh which worked on the test photos. Edited the shell script to my photo file name, didnt work. Renamed my photo to the test photo filenames, didnt work. They are 16 bit tif files.
I am having the same issue. Does anyone have a workaround?
@@odinson364 I couldn’t find one. So I switched to starXterminator. I actually like it better
In the same boat now. It worked a month ago. Now, no joy.
Same issue here with M1 mac and OS12.0 Monterey
+1. 14" Pro, Mac OS 12.1, M1 Pro
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm now in possession of starless images. : )
Thank you so much for this treasure!!
This was a BIG help to me and has me more excited about my images! Cheers!
No problem! That’s really nice to hear, thank you.
I've not dared to touch Terminal before as a long while back users were advised to stay away for fear of corrupting their Mac but I dont think you can go far wrong following your video step by step and its working well for me. I made a couple of errors to begin with typing an Enter where I shouldnt have but apart from that, its all good. I assume I can delete both rgb and mono_test5 files and as long as any additional tif files in the folder correspond to the code in the .sh files that's ok? Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks, yeah you got it! Those test files can be deleted to tidy things up a bit.
excellent video!!
Thanks!
thank you dude...
My pleasure!
@@backyardspacedude4238 dude, does it have to be a .tif? can it be a .psd?
@@richardmattas4003 no harm in trying but I’m fairly certain it has to be a .tif
@@backyardspacedude4238 thanks...get to work and post more video's, because you're darn good at it...
@@richardmattas4003 thanks! If I had more time I would.
Which filter wheel are you using? I’m just starting to look into mono imaging and am not sure if I need the mounted or unmounted filters. I don’t know if most filter wheels will work with either type.
I’m using a ZWO 1.25” 7 position wheel, so it’s 1.25” mounted filters for me. Feel free to message me on Instagram I’ll try help you as best I can, if not you should be able to ask the retailer you’re looking at buying from and they’ll let you know what you’ll need for your setup 👍🏼
Thank you so much for this!! Helped so much!
No problem!
thanks for the tutorial, this is also very useful for those like me that have Pixinsight and M1 apple's chip.
Excellent, I was looking to upgrade to an iMac with M1 and worried about StarNet. I thought it would not run at all, but are you saying that it still works natively outside of Pix?
@@backyardspacedude4238 Yes that's right, it works using the terminal. Slower than it should, but fast enough. I did exactly what you show in the video to make it work :)
@@DavidQuad perfect, thank you!
Really helpful! Thanks a lot for the tutorial.
No problem! Glad to help.

Great video. Thank you so much.
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching.
Sorry. My fault. I missed a step. It's working now.
I was able to get it through the permissions on my iMac the first evening attempting this. Now, a week later, my Mac keeps saying "permission denied", with no options showing up under Security and Privacy. I see no way around this. Can you help?
Having the same issue. Have you figured anything out? Ive ran it on this imac before no problem. I think because of the monterey update its causing an issue
Thank you so much for doing this! I'd seen some of the posts on CN and tried following the instructions but never got it to work. I'd pretty much given up but thought I'd give it one last try when I found your video. It's so much clearer than trying to follow the written instructions. Starnet++ works brilliantly even if it can be a bit tricky making sure everything is set up properly. One problem I had was getting black images with nothing in them after it had run which turned out to be caused by the original .tif having compression enabled - disabling this solved the issue completely.
You’re very welcome! Thank you for taking the time to comment. That’s a useful tip about compression on the .tif, thanks!
Shame it cannot work on 32bit TIFF or Fit files.
I wonder if they’ll add that functionality. It certainly works on PixInsight natively.
Look forward to seeing your results. Nice video
An excellent video! :)
Thank you!
Bro, great tutorial, thanks for sharing!
No problem, thanks for watching!
Followed as per instructions on my iMac 2012 - keep getting resource unavailable
It might be worth heading over to a forum like CloudyNights or Stargazers Lounge where you have room to be a little more specific, rather than UA-cam comments. The first thing I'd try is removing the folder and downloading again, it sounds like there's may a file missing?
After watching the video it finally started working on mac, thanks!
No problem, happy to help!
Of all the tutorials on this program, yours was the best by far! Every other video I watched, the presenters were more concerned about showing off their processing talents and rushing through different steps making it impossible for a beginner like myself to follow. Thank you so much for taking the time and making this video. I subbed your channel so that I can learn more in the future. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for the kind words! I'm happy to have helped.
Thank you for the detailed video! I look forward to trying it.
No probs, let me know how you get on!
Thanks so much, this really helped. One thing to remember when saving the TIFF file is not to include information on layers. If you forget to uncheck this box it will result in an error message in the terminal.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching and taking the time to input.
It would be helpful to know what the error message is. Is it, “operation not permitted” I ask because I’ve never been able to figure out why I get this message. I’ve given the files permission like in the video. The message in the video under “security & privacy” doesn’t show up so it’s not that. I’ve tried saving the file flattened, 16bit, layered, no layers, everything I can think of and still no luck. I don’t even know what it means but the first time I tried Starnet++ the Terminal said that the “bash” thingy no longer works on Mac and to change it to “zsh” so I did. Does this have something to do with it? What I mean is, when I drag and drop the .sh file into Terminal and hit enter, the next line reads, “zsh: operation not permitted: (file path inserted here)“ My hair is in a pile on the keyboard. Someone who knows what this message means and how to fix it please help!
Some great comparisons in this video. I'm on the hunt for some 3nm filters and was wondering (during your research) whether you'd compared these to the Astrodon 3nm filters? The Astrodon filters are a crazy price and was wondering whether there's any difference in quality?
Thanks! I’ve not found a fair comparison between the two brands, no. Let me know if you do!
@@backyardspacedude4238 I certainly will... Closest thing I could find was a comparison between the 3 and 3.5nm. The difference is night and day, but not what I was looking for. I think the Antlia option is what I'll go for, especially as you can buy 2'' mounted.
The difference is still very big. I have antlia 3nm and test photos. You can send me your email and I will send it to you.
This was insanely helpful! Thanks so much for making this video!
My pleasure!
I don't know how to thank you enough. It has been a nightmare trying to find instructions to run starnet++ on a Mac without PI. Now thanks to you, even someone like me who has never used terminal is able to run it. Thank you so very much
Not a problem, happy to help!
Great tutorial thanks for posting 👍🏻
No problem, thanks for taking the time to watch!
Excellent tutorial, thanks so much for putting it together. I've tried to follow those cloudynights instructions a couple of times and I just couldn't get it right - your video was a huge help and now I'm up and running!
Perfect! Exactly why I made the video. Happy to help.
Great new toys 👍
Nice. How do you find the vignetting with the 1.25” filters on the 1600 sensor? Obviously flats correct, but is the vignetting strong?
Thanks! I honestly haven’t noticed it, but then again I don’t think I’ve processed un-calibrated data from this camera yet. Like you said, even if there is vignetting flats get rid of it completely. In-fact, I don’t think I’ve even noticed it when I’m auto-stretching the flats whilst I’m taking them!
I'm using an ASI1600MM-Pro with 1.25'' filters. Vignetting becomes more of an issue for me on faster scopes <f/5. I notice it on my newt (f/4), but that's down to my coma corrector, but there's no sign of it on my GT81 above f/5. The ASI1600 does have a smaller sensor, so that also helps hide it. I don't think you'd get away with 1.25'' filters if you were to use an ASI2600MM as the sensor is much bigger.
@@rv3211 cool cheers
Thanks for taking the time man! Can't wait for the results!!!
Many thanks for this video tutorial; as you say yourself, having a video to show what is required is easier to follow that the Cloudy Nights post from Midnight Dan. When trying this for myself I ran into a problem, the StarNet download did not include any .sh shell files. Do you have any idea what is going wrong here and how I get the .sh shell files to appear n my StarNet_PI-OSX folder? I am running MscOSX Big Sur 11.1. Many thanks, Eamonn
Thanks for watching! It sounds like you’ve downloaded the PI version of StarNet++, you’ll need the standalone Mac version. Should be at this link: sourceforge.net/projects/starnet/files/v1.1/StarNet_MacOS.zip/download
