    Does a 30 inch leader monofilament work well for using these types of lures and maybe like spoons as well

    • @tightlineshightides
      @tightlineshightides 20 годин тому

      I think 30” is kind of long. I generally use between 12” and 20”. That being said, the reason I stay in that range is because I try to keep the knot out of the guides as much as possible. But, if you can tie a good line-to-line knot that doesn’t catch on your guides on the way out then you can use whatever length leader you want. For braid to mono or fluro I use the FG which glides great through my guides.

      I like to use 30# fluorocarbon. It’s a little more abrasion resistant than mono, and 30# usually holds up to most fish I catch on the beach. Just be sure to check for damaged line between cast.

    • @tightlineshightides
      @tightlineshightides 2 дні тому

      In all honesty, it was somewhat convenience. I pretty much always have my rods rigged with braid main line and a fluorocarbon leader tied on with a FG knot. On this day, I wanted to use the Carolina rig, but I also didn’t want to cut off my FG knot and Fluro. So, to save time and line, I decided to just tie on the barrel swivel and mono to the existing fluorocarbon vs cutting off my fluro and tying the swivel to my braid. I could have gone braid to swivel to fluro Or Braid to swivel to mono Or Braid to fluro to swivel to fluro All would have worked the same. Hope this helps and thanks for the question!

    • @fraudsarentfriends4717
      @fraudsarentfriends4717 3 дні тому

      @@tightlineshightides Better abrasion resistance with mono, Better elasticity for casting lead. Better invisibility, Fish can clearly see the braid line. Inshore fishing has rocks, docks and whatever in the and around the water. Braid frays and you just don't need the strength of braid for inshore fish. So way pay so much extra? Braid is better suited to offshore fishing with lures.

    • @tightlineshightides
      @tightlineshightides 3 дні тому

      Good points on the elasticity and abrasion resistance. It’s a trade off for line memory and capacity. As for visibility, I use a good bit of fluro leader which I think takes care of most of that concern. Fluro is less visible than mono in that regard. Also agree that braid cost more, but there are several instances where I was glad I had the extra line. The strength to diameter ratio of braid helps stack on quite a bit more. Tarpon will spool you in a second, which we catch inshore. Always looking to improve my tactics, but I’m not sure using braid makes someone a bad angler. Thanks for the feedback

      Man, those are some great rods you’re looking at. I’m a rod builder, so I generally use my own rods, but I could probably get behind either one. Here is my take though, if you’re going to throw more artificial lures, meaning casting 100+ times in a day, go with the 8’. If you’re looking to do more passive style fishing, casting a line out and letting it rest in a rod holder between strikes, go with the 10’ rod. You can’t go wrong in either case, you can fish artificial with the 10’ rod and you can soak bait with the 8’ if needed. However, if you have an idea of what you plan to do most often, then get the rod for that.

    • @tightlineshightides
      @tightlineshightides 8 днів тому

      Personal preference, but I recommend braid for main line and then either mono or fluro leader. I like braid because of its strength to diameter ratio. This means you can fit more line, of higher strength with braid vs mono.

    • @tightlineshightides
      @tightlineshightides 8 днів тому

      I think the best braid to fluorocarbon/monofilament knot is the FG. I usually put a 3 to 6’ leader on my braid, and the reason I love the FG is, if you do it right it will slide right through your guides without impacting your cast.

      The one I was throwing in this video is a custom rod I built that is fast action. That being said, keep in mind that action is somewhat relative, but this one is mostly flex in the tip, so pretty fast compared to most rods.

    • @tightlineshightides
      @tightlineshightides 9 днів тому

       If you’re planning on fishing this with mostly active fishing with artificial lures, you might want to consider finding a slightly shorter rod. The reason I say that is because, with artificial lures, you’re going to cast 100+ times a day. 11 ft rods are pretty big and those big rods will wear on you after about 30 casts. For artificial lures I like to use somewhere between 7’ and 9’ in order to reduce the weight. Now, if you’re looking to use this rod for more of a passive style fishing rod. Something to put bait on, toss it out, and wait for something to bite, then that 11’ rod will be money!

    • @Dylan-o8n
      @Dylan-o8n 9 днів тому

    • @tightlineshightides
      @tightlineshightides 9 днів тому

      As far as distance goes, I don’t think the difference between a fast action and a moderate fast action matters that much. The fast loads up a little faster and the moderate a little slower, but they both load up in the end. I find the difference comes in to play when working your lure and fighting your fish. The fast action rod generally gives you a little more control and helps you put more direct action on your lure. Always happy to help!

      Thanks for the view and feedback! The setup I have is #20 fluorocarbon and #20 monofilament. I’ll be honest, this was more of a convenience thing more than anything. I always have fluorocarbon leader tied on to my main line with FG knot. There I just swap out lures through the day. In this case I need the barrel swivel to hold the weight up the line so, instead of cutting off my leader, I just added to mono.

      Oh man, if it swims you can catch it with a Kastmaster. Maybe a slight exaggeration… I have caught a ton of species. Most commonly on the beach I catch bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, ladyfish, speckled trout, and jack. I have also landed some flounder, redfish, and snook in the rivers and around jetties. @tightlineshightides 21 день тому

      I have foul hooked my fair share over the years. However in my experience I hook the majority of them in the mouth, not a snag. That being said, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some people purposely trying to snag them with a treble. Not worried about a strike at all, just ripping hooks through the water. Pretty interesting strategy, just not my cup of tea. Thanks four the view and comment!

      Thanks for the view! The blank in this video is MHX. Moderately priced and holds up really well for all I put them through. I abuse my surf rods quite a bit as I ride a good ways with them in the back of the truck. I honestly build with a lot of different blanks though. It all depends on what the customer is looking for.

      Thank for the view! I’m glad you liked it. I generally use VMC. However I have also used Mustad, BKK, and Owner and have no complaints. Size depends on the jig, I like to try to match the weight and width to the table hook that was on there as close as possible. For the most part I am somewhere between a 1/0 and a 3/0 for the jigs I use in the beach.

      Do you have the rod specs on hand or are you looking to buy a new rod too? The rod will give you the range of lures and line power that it was designed for. It is usually right on the side of the rod. If you don’t have a rod yet, I can certainly help you pick out a nice setup. Just let me know what kind of fishing you want to do.

    • @tightlineshightides
      @tightlineshightides 22 дні тому

      Lighter tackle setup, I’m generally around a 20# braid and #20 fluorocarbon leader. As for lure size, your rod should have specs on lure rating. Usually these lighter rods are somewhere between 1/4oz to 2oz.

      I can’t 100% confirm this spec, but I think it is IPX8. In any case, the reel in this video is several years old and exclusively fished saltwater. I try not to dunk it, but it has gotten soaked a few times over the years and is still cooking. I have a stick cleaning routine after every trip and service them annually.

      9’ is a great length for the surf. Usually rods will have a lure rating on the top let you know the optimal weight that rod is designed to throw. With that being said, the shorter answer is yes, your rod will work great. Just get out there and give it a shot!

    • @tightlineshightides

      There are fish in just about all depths. What I like to do is cast out as far as I can, past the swells, and the work the jigs across the troughs. I usually try to cast at a bit of an angle if I can so I can keep the jig in the trough as long as possible. Here in East Coast of Florida, the troughs are pretty close to shore.

    I use egg sinkers on days when the surf is calm and/or the current is minimal and coin sinkers on days when the surf is rough or the current is swift because egg sinkers are easier to retrieve while coin sinkers do not roll.
