Perfect Bait Placement for Surf Fishing Success
Cast distance is for show, but placement gets results! In this video, we'll explore why bait location is far more important than how far you can cast. A common mistake I see is anglers wading way out into the water and launching their lures as far as possible, often casting right over the fish. Many beaches hold fish much closer to shore than you'd expect-sometimes just a few feet from the water's edge. I’ll share how I read the beach to find troughs, holes, and cuts, and where I prefer to place my bait when surf fishing. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned angler, this guide will help you refine your skills and boost your surf fishing success.

Crazy to see a Johnson Silver Minnow in your tackle box. We used those in Minnesota to slay big Northern Pike. A much different situation and species!
Shows how versatile those lures are. That will pretty much catch anything that swims
Love the kast master in freshwater, but I have too much seaweed in my area for the treble hook. Johnson Silver minnow works well if anyone was wondering what to sub
I’ve got those in my tackle box too. Couldn’t agree more
What should be the surface conditions in order for this style to work? - water clarity? - depth? - current?
This style is pretty versatile. I’ve had success in a wide range of conditions. That being said, I normally break this guy out when I can see fish in the surf to throw to. So, while it can catch fish in super rough conditions, I generally find the best opportunities when conditions are calm enough to see fish breaking in the surf.
Keep up the good vids
Thank you!
Dude you dropped that small fish like 4 times. You can’t even handle it.
Kills me rewatching this too. Learned a valuable lesson from this one: 1st goal should be getting a proper grip on the fish; goal #2 photo op and proper release.
don't brain wash public, circle hooks are worthless.
Interesting. I’ve never really heard someone say that a circle hook is worthless. What is your recommended style of hook for live and/or natural cut bait?
Maruto 348 Mutsu hooks, they are sold and advertised as circle but are a hybrid. Very effective hooks.
Carolina Rig??? That is a Palm Lake #1 rig---used as early as 1961 on Palm Lake in Slidell, Louisiana. It did NOT originate in the Carolinas. Nothing personal meant.
Can't say I have heard of a "Palm Lake #1 rig", but pretty cool history lesson. This is sort of like the old argument of where Mardi Gras originated... was it New Orleans, LA or was it Mobile, AL?? ;-) Thanks for the comment!
My Grandpa was winning bass tournaments in Lake Wylie SC with it in the 1950s.J/s
I've never switched out my treble hook but I will say every cast and retrieve on the beach I pull in one to two sand fleas on my treble hook from draging into the sand. Okay if you're collecting sand fleas but I have foul hooked small fish before so maybe switching to a single hook might be something I will try
Same with the sand fleas. I thought it was a fluke chance when I snagged my 1st one, turns out they are just so thick that they are easy to snag. I like the single hook personally, safer on you, better for the fish, and I think it provides a more solid hookup.
My thoughts as well. I live in the San Francisco Bay and I have foul hook small halibuts that were the size of a 50-cent piece coin and I felt bad for doing so I was using a diwa zakana jig which has been successful to me but I feel the treble hook is just a bully out there in the water for foul hooking
Where I live my jig pulls up clams.. Sand fleas when i fish towards marina ca to socal.. Thanks for your channel!
Good info, just don’t over explain the process. Just describe the rig and let us determine certain details.
Thanks for the constructive feedback. I agree with you, I was learning my voice sand getting comfortable in front of the camera on this one. Today I wouldn’t have made this video the same way. Probably would have wrapped it up in about 3-5 minutes. Here is a newer video where I feature the Carolina rig. Much different approach. ua-cam.com/video/gKITzzXD9BQ/v-deo.htmlsi=J7KADs2fL2mVrUlw
Nomad ridgeback long cast 40g is by far the best casting metal i've used, action is very unique and casts like a bullet!
Sick! I love Nomad Design lures. I may give the 20 and 40 a shot. What colors have you tried?
Problem with circular weights is the waves move them very easily, some of us prefer a weight that digs in--a little, into the sand. It can still be a sliding sinker rig, just not a barrel weight. Leader weight is HUGE, where I fish anyway, more like 6 pound, though I don't doubt that some places may well need much larger.
I have tried a similar setup using a Sputnik sinker, attached to a slider on my main line. That worked for starting put, but tangles were a bit of a problem. I have had some recommend a flat sinker, which I think would be great. However, not sure how big they make those. I’m thinking not much more than 3-4oz. What type of sinker do you use with your Carolina rig? Thanks for the view and comment
No perfect solution though in nice weather I actually have had luck fly lining 6 lb test with a sand flea, wading nearly to my waste. These days though a 2 oz Flat weight, sliding rig
What is that box you have your tackle in? Thanks, good video.
Love that box. Keeps everything neat, clean, and organized. Gamakatsu G-Box: amzn.to/3zRQrOn
That skinny fish is a Hound Fish. Pretty common in Florida. Super fun to catch them when they get 3-5’ run at mad speeds and jump like crazy
Interesting! That does look like a match. Thanks for the info!
Is this at pond or a an actual beach? Those waves are pathetically small.
It was an abnormally calm day for sure. Typically not this calm for sure
@@tightlineshightides, ah.. cool.
This was a very clear explanation of where to cast your bait. Thank you. If I could offer one suggestion, it would have been good to see an arrow or a circle showing exactly where the bait landed. Some of the Australian fishermen do this. You may want to check out Roger Osbourne's channel. He is a legendary Aussie beach fisherman. Kind regards MP
Most people have an obsession with casting distance. The truth is the fish will often be close in because that is where the food is. Cast too far and you will go past the fish. Its much better to try and " read " the water and figure out where the fish will be.
Yes! Completely agree. I think you would like the latest video I just posted that talks about bait placement. Perfect Bait Placement for Surf Fishing Success ua-cam.com/video/Wj5_95MCXKs/v-deo.html

i fish in thailand and use Fudd Fudo,Gamakatsu sumo hooks
Thanks for the view all the way from Thailand! What kind of fish are you catching over there?
Egg weights suck in the surf. Pyramid weights don't roll, they stay but.
Yeah, you need a pretty calm day if it’s going to sit out in the surf.
great video!
Glad you enjoyed it ;-)
I’m new to surf fishing. This is very instructive information. Thanks! I’m now a subscriber 🎣
Awesome, thank you!
Would 25 lb fluro help the presentation more?
In general, lighter weight line is less visible to the fish thus provides better presentation. However, you have to weigh the benefit of minor improvements to presentation vs more breaks. It’s a delicate balance that also depends on the fish you’re targeting.
Thank you. Great information
Thank you!

I live about 5 hours from a beach in FL and have never been salt water fishing . I’d love to go next time I’m at the beach
You should! 5 hours from a beach in FL. Where do you live?
Great video! And hello from all the way up here in Titusville!! lol. I fish out at KSC Cape Canaveral the most but also Cocoa Beach and up to NSB some too. Anyways, I’ve been looking for a decent artificial lure casting rod. Was about to pull the trigger on a 9’ rod. You convinced me to go down to 8’. I think I’ll be plenty happy. Glad I found this video.
Hey! Glad I could help guide you. I have been tossing a lot of artificial on the beach recently. My go to rod for the heavier stuff is this custom 8’ rod. I like to throw my metal jigs, long cast jigs, and heavier plugs with that. I’ve also been trying to throw smaller lures like the soft plastic artificial shrimp. But for those I generally use my lighter rods with lower lure rating. Bottom line, be sure to check the lure rating of your rod and try to best match that with the size lures you want to cast. Gives you best performance. Also, I’m a custom rod builder so let me know if you ever want to pick yourself up a custom rod built for you.
Have you fished any Unfair Lures?
I haven’t Paul, but I went right to their site and they look pretty nice. Also, the engineer in me is intrigued with the concept of the “sonic signature” and the father in me loved the concept of “keeping the kids fishing”. Thanks for pointing me here!
@@tightlineshightides I own Unfair Lures and all the IP. Shoot me your address and I will send you some. The 3D gill, molded swivel etc are all unique.
Very cool! My father used to own a small fishing lure company called Zetabait back in the day as well as a rep agency that specialized in hunting and fishing sporting goods. Was the ‘prehistoric fish’ a piper?
I think it was a ribbonfish.
Saltwater beach casting. I've found the only thing needed to catch everything that swims is a spinning reel (20lb mono), any rod, a tin full of swivels and hooks (#6 to 5/0), 1-ounce egg sinkers, and fresh whole shrimp from the fish monger (never frozen). Not the small or large shrimp - all medium, about like your thumb. Always peel off the body armor and squeeze off the end tail of the shrimp. The swivel stops the sinker. The leader can just be another length of 20lb mono about 36". I never trim cut off line tag pieces; it's too toxic to end up in the environment and the fish don't care. You don't need a net or gaff - just gently carefully drag the fish up the sand. Do have in your pocket a long nose needlenose pliers. If you have to, you can double the sinkers to achieve 2 ounces of weight. And you can always put two or even three shrimp on larger hooks.
Great comment! I will try your setup for sure. This sort of sounds like a Carolina rig setup with the sinker above the swivel and a hook/bait at the end. Am I right? Solid setup. My only issue is I sometimes, in rougher conditions, have had issues with tangle. Is this a problem for you at all?
@@tightlineshightides Yes, you're right. It's worth a try, very handy. To avert the tangle, I keep the leader quite short - only 10". Literature says 36" but it will actually tangle if that long. (I think this length is meant for largemouth bass fishing). The short saltwater 10" leader is still enough to sense the fish pull away with the bait.
Great advise! Thanks for the contribution!
I’ve got 6000 shimano Saragossa and I’m using 20 lb braid which gets me just about 300 yards and I use a 40 lb fluro leader is this good?
Perfect! That’s a great reel and 40lb will work fine to
Is your custom rod a medium-heavy or medium-light?
The one in this video is on the heavy side.
Been fishing that way for years...only difference is I use dead shrimp in addition to Bites. I also make my own rigs. Good video, my friend.
Thanks! Glad it hit home. Have any tips on keeping that dead shrimp in the hook during cast?
@@tightlineshightides fishbites or fish gum after the shrimp piece
Great video love the simplicity. Would that rig up north on the east coast i fish in maryland we don't have pompano
That’s actually the great thing about this simple rig, it catches everything. Not just pompano.
@tightlineshightides Thank you brother for the reply
Thanks for another great video. I’m not a video type guy, but you are perfect for it. My fishing rig scissors is a cat nail clippers. It’s also the same kind of clippers but larger size that I use to cut the gardening drip lines. Perfect clean cuts. You should try it. Thanks again for sharing your experiences with us.
Does it cut through braid too? I may try this out, good scissors are hard to come by
Yeah. Clean cuts. It has a groove to keep the cat nail in it. I actually bought the bird nail clippers, but my parrot died and that’s what I use. Everyone says that it’s a cat clipper. I don’t know the difference. It’s probably the same tool.
This is a perfect setup - simple and functional. Thanks for the pointers!
Thank you for the vote!
Does a 30 inch leader monofilament work well for using these types of lures and maybe like spoons as well
I think 30” is kind of long. I generally use between 12” and 20”. That being said, the reason I stay in that range is because I try to keep the knot out of the guides as much as possible. But, if you can tie a good line-to-line knot that doesn’t catch on your guides on the way out then you can use whatever length leader you want. For braid to mono or fluro I use the FG which glides great through my guides.
@@tightlineshightides great thanks! And what I’m using the lures that you were displaying in the video kind of like spoons and Clarks spoon diamond jigs should I use fluorocarbon? Maybe like 30 pound fluro with 20 pound braid?
I like to use 30# fluorocarbon. It’s a little more abrasion resistant than mono, and 30# usually holds up to most fish I catch on the beach. Just be sure to check for damaged line between cast.
@@tightlineshightides great thanks, does the fluro sinking a little more effect the spoons movement or does it not work as effectively if it drops lower in the water
I would say, for these jigs, buoyancy isn’t really a factor. The weight of the jigs is pretty high and they will drag either one to the bottom pretty quickly. If I were using a lighter swim bait in calm waters, I might consider buoyancy of the line, but not so much for surf.
What is that cutting board set up you have on your cart
That actually came with the beach cart. It’s a great accessory. It fits in the rod holder and has a small cutting board and a basket. The cutting board has some holes and slots for hooks and knives. The basket is great for holding sand fleas and also is a great rinsing basket for when you get home.
Thank you. Great info. Im interested to know why you had the mono on the up front over fluro? Still learning
In all honesty, it was somewhat convenience. I pretty much always have my rods rigged with braid main line and a fluorocarbon leader tied on with a FG knot. On this day, I wanted to use the Carolina rig, but I also didn’t want to cut off my FG knot and Fluro. So, to save time and line, I decided to just tie on the barrel swivel and mono to the existing fluorocarbon vs cutting off my fluro and tying the swivel to my braid. I could have gone braid to swivel to fluro Or Braid to swivel to mono Or Braid to fluro to swivel to fluro All would have worked the same. Hope this helps and thanks for the question!
What type of fillet knife is good to use, i bought one but it wasnt good enough to fillet a flounder
I have a classic Wusthof boning knife at the house where I clean delicate fish like flounder. It’s a bit of a pricey knife and I don’t bring it in the beach or boat. On the boat I have a few bubba blades to clean fish. They do alright on most fish, but I bring flounder home and break out the wusthof (sharpened)
does the fluro break easily or something?
No, it’s just that really toothy fish can cut you off. Some people will fish with wire, but that really hurts the presentation if you ask me.
Using Power Pro for inshore fish is only saying how bad you are as an angler.
Interesting. I take it you are strictly mono for inshore fishing? Curious as to why you don’t like braid? Thanks for the view!
@@tightlineshightides Better abrasion resistance with mono, Better elasticity for casting lead. Better invisibility, Fish can clearly see the braid line. Inshore fishing has rocks, docks and whatever in the and around the water. Braid frays and you just don't need the strength of braid for inshore fish. So way pay so much extra? Braid is better suited to offshore fishing with lures.
Good points on the elasticity and abrasion resistance. It’s a trade off for line memory and capacity. As for visibility, I use a good bit of fluro leader which I think takes care of most of that concern. Fluro is less visible than mono in that regard. Also agree that braid cost more, but there are several instances where I was glad I had the extra line. The strength to diameter ratio of braid helps stack on quite a bit more. Tarpon will spool you in a second, which we catch inshore. Always looking to improve my tactics, but I’m not sure using braid makes someone a bad angler. Thanks for the feedback
How far do you cast?
With the jigs, I cast out as far as I can. With my 8’ rod in this video and a 1 1/2oz jig, I’m probably getting it out there between 50 and 80 yards.
I use 6'6 rod
Nice! Out of curiosity, How often do you feel like you needed a little more rod?
@@tightlineshightides I only have 2 rods . Another is a 6ft ultra light rod 😄
Fish with what you got! I love it man.
I just got a 10 foot six rod for some long casting distance for surf fishing would you recommend a Shimano Saragosa 6000?
That’s a great reel! I have one and use it regularly. I actually have a couple, one on my surf rod and another on my big offshore spinner.
Love how his kid is always chilling in the backround
lol. He’s my buddy. Always up for a trip to the beach.
Could I use a shimano teramar xx se 8ft rod for surf fishing? Or should I do a 10 foot st Croix siege?
Man, those are some great rods you’re looking at. I’m a rod builder, so I generally use my own rods, but I could probably get behind either one. Here is my take though, if you’re going to throw more artificial lures, meaning casting 100+ times in a day, go with the 8’. If you’re looking to do more passive style fishing, casting a line out and letting it rest in a rod holder between strikes, go with the 10’ rod. You can’t go wrong in either case, you can fish artificial with the 10’ rod and you can soak bait with the 8’ if needed. However, if you have an idea of what you plan to do most often, then get the rod for that.
Looks bad to the bone It is amazing how some money and TLC breathes new life into older boats
Thanks man, I love this boat and am still out in it every chance I get. Worth every penny on the restoration.
