Discover the Essence of INTBAU Summer Schools
Traditional knowledge offers a wealth of long-tested solutions to modern problems of the built environment, but much of the necessary knowledge has been either lost or overlooked by recent generations of architects and urbanists, as traditional design and crafts are only included in the curricula of a tiny minority of architecture schools around the world.
To increase awareness of the critical role building traditions must play in securing a better built future for people and planet, significantly more opportunities and programmes are needed to reach more students and practitioners, alongside engagement with schools, colleges, and practices.
Each year, INTBAU delivers workshops, summer schools, conferences, study tours, and online seminars for a diverse international audience. Our programmes allow some of the many eager students and practitioners to increase their knowledge, which in turn helps shape their work as designers on behalf of both people and the planet.
In 2024, INTBAU is pleased to continue offering summer schools in traditional architecture and crafts across various countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Australia. Additionally, we're excited to announce the remarkable establishment of two new programmes in Mexico and France.

I'm going to be a cynic here. I've heard wonders about hempcrete as a building material. For example on wall assemblies, there are claims regarding its superior insulation properties, humidity regulation, and fire resistant properties. However it seems like it is not compared to other building materials with fairness. For example, where the insulation properties of hempcrete come from? The hemp itself, the composite material? Has anyone tested and compare to other organic materials like rice husk, chopped straw, chopped bamboo, coconut coir, papyrus? What about other materials like EPS, or polyiso? Are there any superiority of hemp over those materials? I'm not talking about the environment and other political issues here, just from a plain technical point of view. Hemp is a fast growing weed that can be harvested very often and very fast. However so are other plants. On the other hand, there are millions and millions of EPS based packaging materials in land fields all over the world we have no idea what to do with it. Check this video ua-cam.com/video/_FBhqONKB1w/v-deo.html for a good use for that discarded material. Regarding the humidity regulation, I'm guessing the material needs to be exposed for this to really be a benefit. Encapsulated inside a wall assembly will regulate nothing. Being exposed inside the house and to the exterior I can see some regulation, the humidity from inside the house can be sequestered and release to the outside, but only if the outside humidity is lower than the inside. What about in high humid climates? This regulation also works in the opposite direction and brings humidity from the outside inside the house. In regard to the fire retarding property, it is not unique to hempcrete. See link to the video above and all test that guy made to the Styroaircrete material. It also is fire proof. Yep, you can apply a flame from a torch and nothing gets burned. It is not the hemp or the eps beads who make it fire resistant but the composite resulting material. Is hempcrete the holy grail or just a push to make it a wonder building material only to hide the "other" benefits of this plant? Just curious.

Islamic architecture, such as mosques and palatial gardens of paradise, are also embedded with religious significance. ... Islamic art was influenced by Greek, Roman, early Christian, and Byzantine art styles, as well as the Sassanian art of pre-Islamic Persia.

what u have done to create the ambience ,feel .look and the mood orientation to the user in every bit of the corner was carefully managed and crafted one thing i need to mention is that the architectural and spatial quality of the building itself is so mesmerizing and i think is also has helped u on the way immensely since many of the space i do see has an in between space ,in habited wall to ,vintage points to every bit of the site ,the room height(corridor).the line of sight, passage line, approach and so many were all amazing and u done to the last resort u can and there is a saying the hands of architect is the hands of the God yet sometimes this has to put aside since imperfection is also needed and here u do both by keeping some elements to their original intact forms while some which are even better to their former quality and efficiency(structural and non-structural elements) .one thing to ask is it possible to see this place to study and analyze to how it is made is architectural and revamp has made to its new look if possible tnx finally its good work keep the momentum

A warm hello and happy holidays form the winter wonder land of Colorado. Thank you Alex Sparrow for a very informative presentation. I have a question. Is it possible to earth-berm a hempcrete building. Rather, is there a natural/none toxic product to water-proof the outside of a hempcrete building, before berming it. I don't want to use synthetics. Or is there another building technique that is more suited for earth berming? I want to build an "Earthship" like building, but don't want to use plastics to seal it. Thank you very much.
