Now that we are in ALASKA, let's get exploring!
McCarthy and Kennecott, Alaska are two small communities nestled in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. The two towns are 4 miles apart, with intricately intertwined histories and a current population of approximately 50 or so folks. Being in the center of the Wrangell-St Elias National Park, Alaska, makes it the perfect staging area and access point to this amazing 13.2 MILLION acre playground. Today, Kennecott is more of a ghost town and McCarthy a true Alaskan frontier bush community, but it wasn’t always that way.
Over the course of Kennecott’s history, from approximately 1905 through 1938, the operation produced over 590,000 tons of copper and 9 million ounces of silver. The site was abandoned in 1938, and due to the high cost of transportation, most of the equipment used in the operation was left behind.
McCarthy was quite a miners’ and railroaders’ town, with all the - ahem - “entertainment” a young man on the frontier might require. Restaurants, pool halls, hotels, saloons, a dress shop, shoe shop, garage, hardware store, and thriving red-light district all popped up to provide services to more than 800 people in the area.
Brad and I had the chance to stay at the campground that was placed right before the foot bridge you take to walk to McCarthy. This campground was a no frills campground that offered one out house as the main amenities. The real reason people stay here is for the incredible views of Root Glacier and the town of Kennecott and McCarthy in the distance. We hope you enjoyed this adventure as much as we did!

Oh wow your first encounter with a bear lol. It looked like a older cub. The scenery is just gorgeous. Very cool stops. Ok you need to get some lemon eucalyptus oil and mix with water or a carrier oil such as coconut. Spray yourselves and the van. 💯 Percent safe for all. Mosquito and flies hate the scent. When I was in Manitoba, I learned lol. I was so close to Alaska but couldn't get there. I can't wait for your next video. Have fun.

My deepest Condolences! I found you two through Winston & Kim & watched this first. I work in healthcare and it has been a devastating couple years. I'm glad you have Chief to keep a little bit of your Dad with you! Lab puppy! Oh Boy, that will keep your hands full right there! Take care of yourselves, the outdoors will always be there - you can get back to it when you're ready. If you are in Redding, I would highly recommend exploring around Shasta and especially in the Klamath W of Shasta & Yreka - it's beautiful and empty out there. I love it!

Thank you for reaching out and for the support! We didn't know at the time if we would even continue traveling or what our content would look like if we did. We had some time off to think about it; my dad was one of our biggest supporters, so we knew we had to continue at some point. Having Chief with us has lessened the sting of the situation. He is a bright personality who brings us LOTS of joy. We're so happy to have him. Thank you for your work in the healthcare industry! We will be back in Redding when we finish up our current big Alaska adventure! We grew up there, so it feels a little less magical to us, but we still love it there. Especially caving through old lava tubes near Shasta! Where are you from?

@@TrippinwithBradShyla I live on Seattle's Eastside but have been working about every other week in Medford for the past year. Over the last 30 years I've explored Utah, Arizonea, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, California, Idaho, South Dakota, bits of Montana & Wyoming as well as all over WA, OR & BC. Honetstly, I have REALLY enjoyed the Siskiyous & Klamath Mtns. Part of the reason I choose Medford was the impression the Siskiyous made on me almost 20 years ago. They really have alot of the best of the PNW, tempered by CA. Less brush & less steep than farther North and dynamite rivers and streams. Best of all, there's simply nobody out there. I've watched it become progressively more crowded over the last 30 years but not Southern OR & Northern Northern CA. I do think a bit of it would be tough in a Sprinter, I find parts of the NW even a bit tight for my narrow 2002 trucks. I love the outdoors because it's the perfect antidote to the hospital. I'm glad you've been able to go back and find some solace. I'll keep an eye out for your!

Beautiful scenery. Love this journey. So are we replacing the solar panels? The Blue yeti I got is amazing. Its only 600 w but it will power everything I have. I decided that when I get my bigger vehicle, I'm going with Gold Zero Yeti. Although with 400 watts of solar panels it's about 4200. , Its all self contained. I don't know much about electric and it's 3000 w with a controller and inverter built in. Its a pure sine wave lithium battery. If I were to buy everything separate, it would be more. So that's the route I've decided to go. I wish the best for you two. Can't wait until the next video.

Great tips. Right now I'm parked in a sub station bc my torque converter clutch went out. Can't get running again until Thursday or Friday.🥴 However, it's a little harder being stealthy in a SUV lol. I'm really interested in your window coverings. Can you pass info along. Love the 3 amigos lol. TFS

Hi Donna! Sounds like you know how it is to stealth camp! Are you full-time in your SUV? Great question! Here's the link to the brand we used for our window coverings. www.quest-overland.com/ Thanks for watching! Good luck with your repairs!

@@TrippinwithBradShyla yes I'm full time in my SUV except I'm out of commission right now. But the owner of the Sub shop gave me a PT job for a few weeks so I can pay for car without dipping into my emergency fund😁 Thanks for the info. I'll definitely look them up. Check out my no build build.
