Solo Sailing to Drakes Bay and Farallon Islands
In this episode, I solo sail out of the San Francisco Bay to Drakes Bay, explore Point Reyes and then the next day set sail for the Farallone Islands. It was the longest solo trip I have done. I saw dozens of whales, hundreds of seals and even a deer. After motoring up along the Marin coastline I anchor 200 yards from Moli, the boat that had just completed the Figure 8 Voyage. The next day I pull up the anchor and in thick fog I point the bow to the Farallone Island to the southeast.

Salty Posse sails to Sausalito, CA for a weekend of pure fun. The summertime winds made the ride across the San Francisco and the ride back exhilarating. Don't worry, baby Kai was safe below deck. On the way back home we even saw a whale and caught it on camera. Sausalito is a great weekend get away for weekend sailors in the SF Bay and we highly recommend it for an enjoyable relaxing weekend.
Loose the music
the islands look wild, great video!
what time of year did you sail? it's definitely not summer 🙂
Very cool. That's the one thing I miss about living there.
What time of year did you do this trip - later in the season?
how strong was the wind when u were in Drake's bay? I went there and the wind was 20-20knots and my anchor did not hold....
I was looking forward to more exploration of the bay. What happened to the posse?
Why do you think i want to look up your nose???
Ha ha, yet another fond memory! We purchased an old Santana 22 in Emeryville in about 1984. During our initial sail to Glen Cove Marina where we would keep the boat, we overnighted at China Camp. Great adventure for our family with a 4 year old, discovering little known treasures of the bay.
Very nice. This video brought back memories of our young family overnighting in Ayala Cove back in the early 80's. Wonderful times!
Still at Emery Cove? I'm B36.
I was thonking at some active passive utrasonic charged by the water friction ultrasoun or sail ultrasound that can or sure will drive the sharks away. The idea will be to reproduce electronicaly an "picture" of an greater predator than grat shark. Best regardes from Cluj Napoca, Romania, Europe.
Do not bade there mind de great white shark. Eventualy buy an very good fishfinder. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this video. I just recently bought a boat in Sausalito and I'm learning the routes around the bay...
Nice and Creative Videos, This is really my favorite channle.:) .🌴🌴🌴excellent ☺️☺️☺️👍👌👍👌👍🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 🌴🌴🌴 from:Half Moon Bay City San Mateo
Thanks for the details. Very nice video
Would love to crew with you guys some time, I usually sail out of redwood city and would love to get some experience further North
Thanks for the vids. We're signed up for sailing classes but have almost a month to wait. I was really wondering about anchorages and weekend trips out the Golden Gate, both of which you addressed. Do you have a recommended source for more info on such topics?
Hi Vance. Congrats about getting into sailing. It's super fun. Here is a good Bay cruising guide - www.amazon.com/Cruising-Guide-San-Francisco-Bay/dp/1937196445/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_NX7BRA1EiwA2dpg0lJkM-JBLpsEX6QpgRkXzJ_hO-X43yBhB6zrih47LIY8EFvjoiZNVRoCFd4QAvD_BwE&hvadid=384232514074&hvdev=c&hvlocint=9032076&hvlocphy=9047391&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=b&hvrand=4809595476312719485&hvtargid=kwd-820246590860&hydadcr=7440_9611236&keywords=san+francisco+bay+cruising+guide&qid=1601618463&sr=8-2&tag=googhydr-20
Very nice video!! Looking forward to sail soon to Sausalito and angel island!! Good winds!
Hi Breno - Both are great places. I'm sure you'll enjoy them. Have fun!
Yes, make sure not to fall in Oakland Estuary. I've seen needles and other "personal" products floating around...
Hey, this is a journey I want to make in my sailboat. I'm also in Emeryville marina. How do you figure out if it will be calm enough? What is your strategy for the tides? Is there any safety equipment you consider essential for a trip like this? Radar? My boat is 30'.
Hi Evan. I'm glad to hear you are planning a similar trip. I use Windy.com to see how the wind and the waves will be. Typically the more wind the larger the waves, although that is not always the case. Windy.com has a nice wave feature which tells you the swell and the wind wave direction, size and period. For tides you'll only need to worry about the golden gate. I try to leave the golden gate under slack or weak ebb. Coming back, I was hoping to avoid the max ebb which really slowed me down. Other boats went north and then through the Bonita channel instead of through the main shipping channel which really saved them some time. If you can plan it so that you can make it back through the gate in a flood tide, that would save you a lot of time. When you get to Drakes Bay it would be good to anchor out pretty deep because there is a lot of sea weed and the closer in you get the higher the chance of it getting sucked into the engine cooling system. For equipment, I didn't have radar. I used AIS and GPS instead. Radar would be nice, but AIS tells you where all the larger boats are and GPS lets you know where the land is. You'll miss some of the smaller sailboats and fishing boats, since they may not have transmitters. I did have a radar deflector. Radar deflectors and AIS are both pretty cheap. Also, it would be good to have a dinghy with a motor. It gets windy in Drake's Bay in the evening and I would worry that I wouldn't be able to paddle against the wind it get back to the boat. It'll be a fun trip. Good luck!
I liked your samba! Good choice, nice video, I’ve been planning to sail from San Mateo to angel island
I use carabiners as well to grab the moorings and a kayak to double the lines back to the boat. That bracket and carabiner on a stick is really well thought out. Is that matched bracket and carabiner an existing product or did you fabricate the bracket. It’s so smart! I end up grabbing the rear mooring with a boat hook and leaning over the side to clip the ring with the carabiner. As you can imagine this can get a little hairy in higher winds that often come through there.
Hi Max. The Carabiner and Bracket is made and sold by Kong which is a manufacturer of sailing and climbing equipment. They're based in italy but the USA office is very friendly and responsive.
Nice mooring ball tool. However without a dingy makes it a little tougher to disengage when leaving. Suggestions?
Hi Chris - I try not to leave the carabiner on for very long. Once we are settled in, I get the dingy in the water and replace the line with the carabiner with another line that loops through the mooring ball and then back to the boat. The carabiner is pretty rugged but it is still probably not recommended to leave it on the mooring ball for any significant period of time, especially if it is windy. I need the dingy anyway to get to the island, so its not a big deal to switch it out. The freeboard on my boat is pretty high, but if I had less freeboard it would be possible to leave the carabiner on the mooring and then have enough extra line on the bow line to pull yourself to the stern mooring ball, disengage the stern carabiner and then pull/motor yourself to the bow mooring and disengage that one. I've never tried it, but I think that might work OK if you had long arms and low freeboard.
Nice Wauquiez, We are looking at a Pretorien 35
Thanks. Pretoriens are good boats. If you buy it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I intended to anchor there a few weeks ago, but a forecast for winds clocking to the north made it a potential lee shore. Was pretty happy at angel island as the forecast was true, but definitely interested in anchoring at China camp soon.
Hi Max. It's a good place, I recommend it. I have an all chain rode, but if you use line people say keel wrap is an issue there. Other than that, I think it is a nice place to spend a weekend.
That was really useful, I'm planning on taking my boat down from Emery Cove soon & haven't gone too far outside of the GG.
Nice, I'm glad you found it useful. My boat is also docked at EmeryCove. If you have any questions about going down to Half Moon Bay, let me know. It was only my second time sailing down there, but who knows, maybe I'll have a good answer. It was a weird weekend when we filmed this, wind from the south most of the trip as opposed to the typical northerly wind. The other time I headed down, there was no wind coming back up the coast, so that could happen too. We motored the whole way back.
It's a BYC sail out, one of the leaders said I could follow him out & always turn around if it gets too hectic for me. Hoping to snag one experienced (outside of the bridge) crew in case I get seasick with the swells. I don't get seasick normally, not used to large swells though. Last weekend was the Angel Island sail out I single handed & my h took the ferry over the next day to sail back. I did have help with the moorings when I got there, couldn't have done that by myself!
For Halfmoon Bay, if you think you might get seasick, just take a seasickness pill before you go. It is something I always forget to do and then half the time I end up regretting it. You can't see it in the video but I was a little queasy on the way down. The other two guys had patches. I took a pill for the trip back up and it was great. I'm probably going to have to do more single handling myself now - last weekend, Kai (our 1 year old) got seasick and threw up twice and he's to young to take any pills.
I'm glad you guys are back on after a long while. I like your vlog and lifestyle. I'm a newbie sailor in the Bay area. Your videos are as informative as they are fun to watch. I look forward to seeing new episodes.
Thanks, I'm glad you like them because we enjoy making them. Hopefully we'll see you out on the bay.
Great job. Hope you had fun.
Thanks Cole. Yeah, we had a great time. The boats been taken out of the water all winter for repairs, but I can't wait to get back to sailing and making some more videos. We have a week in the Sacramento Delta coming up, so I'm excited about that.
This is a great video series. I’ve been waiting for one on the SF Bay. I keep my Boat in Oakland. A 40 ft regal power Boat. We should raft up sometime
Thanks! Yes, rafting up would be great. We have a couple spots we want to check out this spring. China Beach, Napa River, Westpoint Slough, Horseshoe Bay, and maybe up the Petaluma river if they end up dredging it.
Salty Posse thanks! Keep me posted. Horseshoe bay by cavallo point is one of my favorite spots. Let me know when you plan going up there
Salty Posse would also like to take a trip to half moon bay
Beautiful family, great video please make more.
Thank you, I'm glad you like the video!
