Old English and lyre with Russell
United Kingdom
Приєднався 10 сер 2016
Spoken Old English recorded at the locations in England that it speaks about.
And recordings of me playing vaguely Anglo-Saxon lyres.
And anything else I feel like.

Wow! Incredible❤ What instrument is that flute - which notes can be played? I wonder if there is a fingering chart🙏
@Maruskovi this is a Susato Tabor pipe in G , it plays almost the same notes as my lyre. I can get G A B C D E F G, Plus other notes by half covering holes.
A fingering chart came with it but it's mostly like the bottom half of a whistle
There's some skills, playing both at once! Very impressive! I love bear dance too :)
@@DarkBardess give it a try! It's a fun way to be confused.
Love this song, and this version ❤
@@phylliswicks thank you!
I've listened to this one repeatedly for the past few days! My sincerest and most heartfelt regards to you and your family up there. I hope it doesn't get worse than it already was. Terrible storm. Warmest regards from California. <3
So far it's just been fun for me, I've seen some fallen trees but nothing worse.
@@oldenglishandlyre Thank goodness. I can't even imagine Liverpool right now, let alone west Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The last pipe n Lyre of the season
Getting really good at this now.
@@Grendelcynn I'll get time for more practise today. It's getting better
As excellent as ever.
Thank you Russ, so proud my song sounds in england 😊
Très belle vidéo. Le coucher de soleil est magnifique.
@@Quentowic lever du soleil, mais oui !
@oldenglishandlyre 😅
My kingdom for a Horsa!
I'm enjoying these flute and lyre videos you've been doing. I love the combination of sounds and I think it would be great as entertainment, both in the past and now. Having both instruments controlled by one person allows improvisation in a way that is hard to equal with two players. I think I ought to try it.
@MabInstruments I hope you do try it ! I love it. I'm still working on the independence and the parallel playing. Its a head scratcher to start with but my Tabor pipe has almost the same notes as my lyre so I shouldbe able to play the same tuneson both.
@oldenglishandlyre, I'm trying it right now!
Thank you
❤️🔥 One of my favorite country dances since adolescence. Goddesses is also terrific
It's fairly new to me. I got it from the excellent Dunholm Piper. ua-cam.com/video/jGGWRienlLY/v-deo.html
Excellent is right - a warming and proper great performance!
I love playing music with my son.
@@oldenglishandlyre He's talented, I can say that for sure! A trained musician is the best musician. I wish I was formally trained - you are obviously a proper father likewise, I am glad he is fortunate to have these things. :) A hearty cheers to you both!
Lovely, and most interesting - generally the "g" is not pronounced hard at the beginning of a word unless specifically stated like ġ but I notice there are some exceptions! I assume this would be in the "North of the Humber" dialect as it is a personal letter as opposed to the West-Saxon Northumbrian scriptural writings for the public at the time. I'm not at all much of a historian on this particular subject, but goodness, it's a downright shame your channel is not more popular! Your pronunciations are spot-on, and that northern cadence makes it all the more authentic - and yes, it looks quite warm out there for January, good for recording but a proper shame what carbon emissions are doing to our planet. Thanks for this.
Love the two sites! Thank goodness the weather was kind to you. Fela þancas!
So beautiful 😍
Thank you!
great ! And the sound is good
I love to play that tune !
Marvellous! 👍
This is just amazing!! What are you playing? It just sounds so nice!❤
@TheZoes-wq2yl thank you! Do you mean rhe instruments or the song ? These are my Anglo Saxonish lyre ( should be 6 strings but I like it with 7 ) and my Tabor pipe in G. The tune is a song I wrote from the text of Bob Beagrie's epic poem Eftwyrd. See other videos on my channel for more
This is great. Just amazing my friend

Beautiful - fierce and lovely!
Trouble Bruin! Ahem. 🐻
Bravo!
Thanks, to you too
All the best for 2025! 🍺
What a fierce and well-played take on the hornpipe - the Black Nag likewise! A lot easier to play on banjo than one may anticipate, though I remember it being difficult on the recorder.
@@mysterymichaelman hear my plastic strings and fear my vicious Hornpipe mortals !
@@oldenglishandlyre The plastic (BPA, BSA and phyto-contaminants which deteriorate us all) is the most fearful thing of all! Hahahah. I've got a proposed project going and I've contacted a number of people for it, including the Dark Bardess who I've seen you comment on as well! :)) My email is on my channel page - we're doing "Sovay the Female Highwayman" for a charity album by Jonny Mozza, a vlogger and UA-camr from London! I would love to see what you could do with it! I've got my backing vocals, bongos, guitar, and banjo on it. I was hoping the Dark Bardess or Jonny Mozza's girlfriend could sing the dialogue for Sovay. Let me know! <3 Glad tidings to the north!
@@oldenglishandlyre Oh, and email me your Discord if you have one! I can invite you to the server when they want more people. This literally all started like three days ago. Hahahahah

@grahamturner1290 cheers! You too Graham.
Woah
Are you in a bus?
Yes. But nobody else is here
Sounds very nice. What do the numbers on the left mean?
I think those are the fingerings for the flute things
That's right. How many holes to cover on each pipe. I'm working on resources for Dulzainas Ecuatorianas.
Nice job!
Thanks!
brilliant
i am so pleased to of watched this video it was so nice and very enjoyable' I LIKE THE BEAUTYIFUL garlands
Glad you enjoyed it!
Outstanding!
Thank you kindly!
I think it would sound better if they were in different octaves
@@malariagaming can you show me ?
@oldenglishandlyre if one of the ecuatorianas was in a lower octave i think the harmonies would be nice
@malariagaming It would get complicated because sometimes the melody is on one pipe, sometimes the other. Sometimes the right pipe plays higher than the left, sometimes lower, depending on breath pressure.
@@oldenglishandlyre fair enough, thanks for explaining
Always good to see Beverley Garland keeping up the traditions. Thanks for posting.
