Yep, love is messy. For just a moment you lose control, but you keep telling yourself "it doesn't matter." You've extracted those few seconds of truth and left behind the lie you tell yourself... she doesn't matter.... she doesn't matter.
The middle part, messy? It's what makes the whole thing work, it's the point of the whole bloody thing, the pang one feels when they've left, before one is capable of realising that it doesn't matter, it's what brings meaning to the reprise at the end... without it the whole thing becomes dull, meaningless, not worthwhile listening to because the heart has been taken out.
