Mic Shoot Out Guitar Amp SENNHEISER E609 E906 vs BEHRINGER B906 vs SUPERLUX PRA628 vs CAD AUDIO D80
Ever wondered how a Behringer B 906 compares to the Sennheiser E906? Well, here's your answer!
Microphones / Settings used:
Sennheiser e609
Sennheiser e906 flat
Sennheiser e906 hi boost
CAD Audio D80
Superlux PRA-628 MKII
Behringer B 906 flat
Behringer B906 hi boost
All tracks were recorded through an SPL Channel One preamp into a Persons Converter and then straight to hard drive and exported with a slight bit of dbx-style compression to match levels and dynamics better (GR 1-2 dB max!).

She really wants to be a part of the universe..
Anyone feel like these sound pretty similar?
Really helpoful, thanks a lot!!!
Is it just me irrationally annoyed how she sometimes physically dips down on the poppy plosive “P”, lessening it. The V7 is undoubtedly right up there for similar but ore expensive mics. Obviously the clear leaders are the (high much more expensive!) Senny 441 and the RE20. Might have been worth including the RE320.
For all those fellow flute and woodwind players out there.. if you can not afford a Neumann KM 184, this is the best microphone you can get (provided you use correct positioning). Trust me, I have been there. After buying (and returning some) SM 57/58, Beta 57a, V7, V7x, NT1A, NT1, NT5, Oktava MK012, ... This sounds by far the best on a flute (and probably other woodwinds).
As always, tests like these just goes to prove, that beauty is in the ‘ears’ of the beholder! If possible, ALWAYS test before you buy!
NT5 is too harsh and shrill, SE8 is too warm and dark, Oktava is too mid forward and thick sounding, CE4 is too thin and not enough definition to the sound. (Cardioid capsules) Maybe I'm a bit perfectionalist, but none of these "budget" mics are as good as they are advertised.
I really like the sennheiser 441 and 421. I might be getting the 421 for singing, voiceover, video, and music. The sE V7 also sounds amazing, and has that supercardioid polar pattern for better noise rejection, but I like the tone of the 421.
Amazing what a sound, never heard anything like it, super
Thank you so much for your kind words! Much appreciated! About two years ago I sold this guitar to a young ambitious jazz player. To this day this was the best sounding hollow body I've owned. I can't put into words how smooth and rich it sounded.
Thanks for your work, but I have a question, in the video it seems that there is only one microphone of each type but you said that you recorded in stereo so I assume that you used an AB technique and that the others are partly not seen. Or am I wrong? Thanks
Exactly, I had the microphones set up in an A-B stereo pattern, so only the left side was visible on camera. The other microphones captured more of the bass side, thus were positioned further back (and closer to the bass strings)
I like the M88 and MD 441 here best, though the SM58 and SM57 do well - RE20 was nice too - the MD421 is nice and bright
SE Omni’s are absolutely fantastic. I use Schoeps & AKG C480 and I’d have no problem using these in conjunction with them. If you’re in a decent room, omni is almost always preferable to more directional patterned mics
545 for the win
I'd say the 609 did the best job without coloring the sound. I think the 906 is a little hot probably not the best for cranked high gain amps but better for anemic sounding clean sound sources like quiet vintage amps to bring out the dynamics and color. The Behringer was like a wet blanket. The CAD was a little bright. I'd like to combine the CAD and the 609 or the CAD and the 906 in flat mode loud high gain guitars. 609 all day for Fender combo. Great comparison. Thank you!

For my ears the NT5 sounds absolutely cheapo. The others need different EQ, buu provide a nice base with the Oktava being my first choice.
I have the Superlux (for the road) and Behringer (in church) and this video convinced me to turn the high boost on the Behringer.
This is a helpful video but I do wonder why it was necessary to use an inline preamplifier? A lot of folks are going with the 441 but I want to say that there's a bit too much high end for my liking. I'm leaning more towards the sE's and RE20s on her voice. Two of my favorite mics, the M88 and 421, sound terrible here! lol. At any rate, thanks for putting this video together.
Listening to it without looking the one mic that finally made me look was the CAD Audio D80, each and every time.
It has a little bit of a bright edge the rest don't it also lacks some body. Perfect to combine with the 609 or the 906 in flat mode.
@@truescotsman4103 Thanks for the advice!
Very interesting ! Do you think the Superlux is fine to record bass guitar amp? Thanks
Определенно 441 топ.
Do i really need to buy "MIC LIFTER? like 'DYNAMITE' or FETHEAD?) i'm looking up to buy the V7 or V7X and which is good for vocals (singing, some voice over/podcasting) ??... please answer thanks.
Depending on your setup (preamp etc.) you might have trouble with noise, but you can somewhat survive without. It really is an upgrade and it opens up some more opportunities if you get one. Don't skimp, buy the sE Dynamite!
@@aeproducedbyequiano2216 currently i have the Zoom Livetrak L-8 right now.. do you think L-8 preamp can handle the se v7? i mean the noisefloor and the output power (do you thiunk i need a "lifter" with it)
MD-441 is the clear winner on her voice in my opinion.
Best shure 545 and ev re20. thanks for the video!
Wow... that sounds great and so beautiful
Se8 is the best at the moment in time, Because it’s the km184 most people can afford.
Props to the pianist, Maria Delivicheva, for having to play the same piece over and over and over.
or it was one take and the editor just altered the sound source. :P
@@MrBilloven yes :) . But she is an outstanding (professional) piano player. I have huge respect for her! 🙋🏻♂
Electro-Voice RE320 would have been somewhat immune to plosives like the RE20... without the mud. Shure SM27 would have been interesting to hear too... according to her voice...
Thanks @Sousafolle for your comment. The RE320 and the Shure SM27 are both condenser microphones. We tried to compare some common (high quality) dynamic microphones
Sennheiser is the standard the others try to be. 421 is an incredibly versatile mic.
0:13 vs 2:26
545 SH is the best. And RE20...
Rode NT5 is the best mic in this video because it is the quietest mic, and it gives all details well. Especially se electronics and others should resolve the noise problem because it is so important in terms of acoustic sound. Rode have been satisfying customers for years because they know how to make a mic and they are honest when they give information about their products :) NT5 is quieter than se58. opss.. If you don't prefer Rode NT5, you're going to be regret like those who didn't prefer Rode NT5. I know, se58..etc have attractive boxes, interesting advertisement, new technology so you may think they are quality products, but their performances are not as good as NT5 :)
I am about to return my se8 pair for the nt5. I will do a direct comparison of noise levels before I return the se8 though, and report the results. The se8 I hear a lot of hiss noise...not too impressed. I mean yeah, they sound really nice, but polluted with background hiss is no good. Se need to have an official complaint filed on their misleading advertisement of the noise levels. This is not the only post/video where people are reporting the se8 being noisy.
@@MarkShawMediahave you got the nt5? Do you like it more and how's the noise level compared to se8?
@@mamad504 No. I had the se8 but returned them. Way more self noise than advertised. I got the Audio Technica 2022s, they are almost totally silent and live up to their 13db self noise claim.
@@mamad504 I sold Rode NT5 to buy NT55, but I was very content. There is no problem Rode mics in terms of noise. If you want to be convinced, I used Rode NT55 for my new song on UA-cam. DON'T FORGET!!! The most important difference between Rode NT55 and Rode NT5; Their performances are the same, just patterns are different. Shortly Rode NT55 has Omni Polar and cardioid pattern for one mic but Rode NT5 has only cardioid. Rode is really noiseless bro it is like dead people :) there was that se8 in someone else's studio and se8 was like at a concert too noisy. Trust me, Rode is better...
I know it’s an old post, but just adding my two cents that I own a stereo pair of sE8 (cardioid and Omni capsules) and mine don’t have any self noise/hiss issues mentioned but they definitely do let me hear any hiss or noise in the room. I’ve also used a lot of Røde (including NT5) over the years and actually went with the sE8 pair because of the higher noise floor of the NT5. NT5 is a beautiful mic too though. Just too noisy for orchestral recording vs the NT5 for me. 16dB vs 13dB self noise. 3dB does make a difference in that setting. As a nice bonus, the sE8 pair came with a metal case, nice stereo bar and more importantly the mics have built in high pass and pad built in. I hadn’t used sE before and bought these as an alternative to one of my favorite mics historically, Neumann km184 (also 13dB self noise) that was just way too much money without noticeable performance beyond the sE8.
se v7 sounds so smooth even tho the plosives are a bit out of hand
Nice style, voice, and great feel on the strings, and about the Him Would love to make music with you 2. Don't happen to be near L.V. NV good mic comparison
sE8 omni totally best, studio projects worst, metallic sounding, I use that one only for the click on bassdrum front skin rim placement.
Did you mean the CAD D80? I can't find anything about the E80 online
Yes! Thanks, well spotted!
Thank you for a wonderful comparison.

And the winner is V7X, no. 2 441.
I am part of your plosive bad mic technique.
RE20 and D12.
That D12 actually sounds pretty good on her! That was unexpected. Thanks for the shootout, and yeah, the plosive thing that others have mentioned.
0:11 1:06 0:23 1:20
Not really good review. What’s up with that dynamite stick? We just want normal xlr connection
Ymmv. All the best to you!
It's just an inline pre-amp... Literally does nothing more than adds a few DB of clean gain so the preamp of the desk/interface doesn't have to be driven so hard. In-fact, it helps us hear more of the quality of the mic by cleaning up the signal. It's still a great review.
Jesus Christ the 441 sounds insane
In this comparison maybe Oktava MK012 or Studio Projects C4 would sound better with bass rolloff enabled. Then they would sound perfect. Rode NT5 is loser in this comparison, too thin/flat/lacking in character/nondescript/boring.
They should have put more up 2 date shure beta 58 in the shootout because shure mics used about 60 yrs old
The technology of dynamic pressure transducer hasn't really changed in the last 60 years. Nor has what the human ear (brain really) perceives as pleasant or unpleasant. Maybe one reason why many old microphones are still popular today... By the way, don't believe these recent production genuine Shure SM57/58 sound the same as the ones manufactured in the late 1960s. Straight from the horse's mouth (Shure): "The fundamental design of the SM58 has changed little since 1966, but manufacturing processes have changed, glues have changed, plastics have changed."
can someone please explain to me why the Oktava sounds so much more intimate in the cardioid test compared to the others?
Rode is the last for me se and oktava kinda feel like they are on paar some things in the oktava that I would prefer differently some in the Se... Listening back. Cardoid Oktava > Cardoid SE, but Omni SE > Omni Oktava to me The winner to for me is the C4 I just really like how smooth it sounds
