I grew up being close to the water, loved everything about it. Spent my summers as a child swimming. Started scuba diving back in 1964 and got certified. Loved diving on old wrecks. Bought my first boat before I had a driver's license and have had one ever since. I hold a divemaster and a captain license. I have been doing photography for many years including underwater.
Back in the seventies I worked in a local shipyard for a couple years and worked on some of the ships that I photograph today.
Being a photo bug and a maritime enthusiast I got into photographing ships about 10 years ago. Last year I received my 107 airmen certificate for a commercial drone pilot. Ship watching has turned into a great hobby.

Food for thought, why don't you see if you can get a rendering On the ship being built, that would really be nice, and informative
I have a question. Which G-tug was on standby to assist the James R Barker? I try to keep track of the names of these little workhorses of the ports.
In my opinion, the Crest isn't as good looking as the James R. I love the huge old freighters.
That music is just
Fantastic, love it
Wow what’s up with our footers?
It’s late in the season, thing wear out. I hope the Barker and Tregurtha are quick fixes and not a safety issue.
Old age😢
That’s coincidental… I saw a video on Saturday where the Paul R went out but then returned to Duluth, apparently having some sort of issue.
What is the cost of such a freighter when completed?
Is she and the Roger blough still around layed up? What about the Phillip r Clarke?
Yes on the first two, and no re the Clarke. She's back sailing after a late start to the season.
Awesome, video! It's great to see a new ship built for our Great Lakes! 👍👍
Was the Cason J callaway scrapped?
Far too many shippers are opting for "cheaper" overseas shipbuilding. As a result too many US shipyards have closed, and those skills have been lost. It is so heartwarming to see one of our own building a laker again. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
I recently found out my great grandpa helped build this ship in Detroit. I’d love to see it sailing
Why did they decide to put the conveyor machinery on the bow?
She will be in long term layup. Not scrapped.
Так тихо ❤❤❤
This ship was purposely designed to get into smaller ports that a lot of the other Lakers cannot get into
very nice video there bud. amazing power they have for sure
Thank you!
Are they in cold layup or do they at least run accessories and the bilge pumps?
cool video, nice work
Thank you!
Nice production ❤
Thank you! Very much appreciated.
Wow…what a Beautiful video! Gary, you’ve got the right stuff for your videos, the music is great and I felt like I was flying along side the drone! Once again you have given us another masterpiece! Great work Gary… Thanks!
Thank you very much!
Just a Fantastic video! You got the “Touch Gary!” Thanks!!
Wow, thanks!
I think my wife and I saw this ship being built! We go up the thumb once a year to get our Lake Michigan fix...May the Good Lord keep her off the bottom!
Great video!!! thank yo so much for your time and effort into this.
Was it my imagination but did her horn kinda have a little high pitch whistle at the end of each blow of the horn? Sounds like a fireworks going off lol Great video thank you 😊
Coming off of the lake they are partially frozen.
@@GaryCihlarPhotography at this time of the year they sure are. It’s kinda funny listening to some of them lol Even the Arial bridge in Duluth can sound funny 😆 Thank you again. Stay safe and warm. See you and all the captains and their crews again in a couple months.
I thought that this example of photography and video just excellent! The whole production was amazing. I love these boats and so enjoyed seeing them in winter layup. Also I’m not sure who hates UA-cam music, but yours was beautiful and appropriate. Thank you for a terrific production!❤
Thank you very much!
Great EXCEPT for the music. Pls…NO MUSIC. This isn’t a feature film and polls on YT music attached to a good video all reveal it’s hated.
Why is music hated when it can be turned down and not heard?
Why do you complain about this genuine production of the Great Lakes fleet offered to you free of charge though the artist has put many hours of time and labor into it? Time and labor that can never be regained?
if your smart enough to click on the video you should be able to figure out how to turn the volume off if your not a fan of the FREE music that went with the great video.
Beautiful video! Thank you
Thank you!
brings back memories bud. cheers
Great video of this ship construction in Sturgeon Bay. This is a smaller ship at under 650 feet long. Put this next to an oceangoing bulk carrier taking iron ore from Port Hedland, Western Australia taking ore to India or China it looks very small. Those huge ocean going ore carriers are over 1,200 feet long, over 200 feet wide and draw near or over 60 feet of water. They can carry at least 5 to 8 times the amounts of iron ore than this new ship. Port Headland has ships coming in drawing near and over 60 feet of draft. They have to wait for high tide to allow these deep draft vessels into Port Headland.
I can hear that horn all the way to Texas hahahaha
Dios que grande es! en las photos no parece tan inmenso !
Another freighter for the scrap yard. As a Little kid growing up on the shore of Lake Superior, I remember freighters sailing up and down the lake one after another. It was exciting to see them go by. Those days are long gone.
She has not been sent to the scrap yard...yet
The majestic old guard is slowly being replaced by the newer big boats.
Great video Gary. I have a feeling her fate lies with the Blough, next step will be the scrap yard.
I'm thinking whoever buys U.S.Steel will probably make the call on both boats Hard to hit the Like button!
CN now owns the Great Lakes Fleet. Another example of companies spinning off subsidiaries and divisions.
😪 Very sad. She's the same vintage as the Anderson, Hoyt II, Jackson and Munson. How many more of these classics will be gone? Even the Sykes is older than her.
Nice Video Gary!!😃
Thanks Mark!
😢 I miss seeing the Roger Blough sailing also. ❤❤
Will she sail again?
Fantastic.
is that the roger blough?
God bless the birth of a new laker. Much of the great lakes fleet is quite aged, even though still beautiful. These hard working vessels and crews seem to survive bounties and hardships for decade after decade keeping commerce going to benefit us all. Absolutely great video of a ship sure to become popular with ship watchers. So well done, thanks.
It's a shame knowing what would eventually happen with the Thompson. Hopefully a new barge can be found for the Laura, the Laura and Thompson were quite busy hauling ore the past few seasons.
I worked on her during construction at Bay Shipbuilding
Is it pretty easy to get hired if u get a twic mmc and passport? Most the freighter companies on lakes are shortstaffed?
A great ship
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The spirit of Cooper still sails with the Anderson!!!!
That structure on the bow which i assume is part of the self unloader is absolutely hideous. I like the older freighters too. Most modern ships are ugly period.
