Borders & Flatlands - Getting to grips with my First 1000km Audax
This is the impromptu tale of my first 1000 km Audax event, organised by Andy Berne of Tyneside Vagabonds. Impromptu because I'd had no intention to video it, having made the decision to leave my GoPro camera at home. Unfortunately however, I couldn't resist the temptation to hit the 'record' button on my phone and once I'd started, I couldn't stop. From the footage recorded I think I've managed to assemble a fairly honest and informative account of a well-attended, multi-day cycling event, through Southern Scotland and Northern England. As cliched as it sounds, and even though I'm in my sixties, this first year of long/ultra-distance cycling has been revelatory, proving that life is itself, a journey. One I'm enjoying very much.

Part 2 of a two-part account of my first Audax UK approved 'Do-it-Yourself' 600 km event through North East England. I've called it 'Easy Rider' as it's a figure-of-eight loop based on my home in Durham, so that I can sleep in my own bed between sections. Despite having been an avid cyclist for over forty years, the last couple of years have opened the door to new cycling experiences. After try...

Despite having been an avid cyclist for over forty years, the last couple of years have opened the door to new cycling experiences. After trying short, sharp, cyclo-cross for the first time last year in 2023, this year I decided to ‘go long’ by entering a series of audax events, maybe even achieving ‘Super Randonneur’ status for which I'd need to complete a 200 km, 300 km, 400 km and 600 km eve...

With an emerging idea of achieving Super Randonneur status in my first full season of audax, this 400 km event, organised by Dean Clementson of VC167 (and of which I'm also a newly joined member) seemed to offer just the sort of terrain and profile I felt would suit me. Starting and finishing in Alnwick, Northumberland, it winds its way through the Anglo-Scottish Marches, the border shires of England and Scotland. It's been a while since I posted a 'Cyclo-cross for the over-60s' video following cancellations due to weather and a sense that there may be little left to say until summing up the experience in a couple of weeks' time, at the end of what's a very brief season. Also, I'd lost the mojo somewhat but as there were a couple more videos 'in the can', so to speak, here's the first of them. This NECCL...

I don’t think I’ve mentioned yet that the NECCL is a lower key way to get into cyclo-cross here in North East England. It's held under the auspices of TLI Cycling in contrast to Cyclo-Cross North East (CXNE) events which are administered by British Cycling. Organisation, infrastructure and categories are simpler and the events themselves less formal. Lack of commentary or podium presentations a...

It's easier to access though and offers a brilliant experience whichever aspect is looked upon, either from the 'free' sid...

Great work =) Enjoyed that
Congratulations Scott. Another brilliant ride & accompanying video. It’s really brightened up a miserable Sunday afternoon. Hope the backside wasn’t too painful!! Thanks a lot for sharing this.
Well done and congratulations. Top effort! You explained long distance Audaxing really well, almost to the point of motivating me to give one a go! My longest so far is 300km, but no over nights yet. I see I made it through the final cut, that's me in the open red zip up top at 23:28 . Have you considered posting this on the Tynside Vags Audax page? I'm sure loads of others would like to see your video, and also the 'Audax UK Events And Long Distance Rides page? Take care and see you at an event sometime. Stuart (aka Stuggy :)
well done 🚴 do riders not try to stay in little groups on audax rides .i know from past sportives it helps if iam not suffering alone🥴
Brilliant , 👍 👍
Top job
The Cycling Aydax History Man, thoroughly enjoyed video 😁
Good, I'm pleased. Thanks for watching it - Episode 2 is up as well
What a wonderful 600 my friend….You don’t happen to be on Strava do you, it’s a wonderful part of the world and I wouldn’t mind having a crack at your route. I’m down in the West Pennines but do quite a few of Andy B’s Audax’s, never been under the Tyne Pedestrian tunnel tho and wouldn’t mind giving it a go. Many thanks
Thoroughly enjoyed part 1, looking forward to part2
Thanks for watching Andy and pleased that you enjoyed it. Sorry that I couldn't join DCV at the weekend as planned but I didn't realise what a toll a 1000 km event would take on my system. Looks like you all had a great time though.
@thedurhamcow3535 Yes, so lucky with the weather (head wind on the last 25 miles on day one was tough). You couldn't make it would have been good to catch up.
@@andycswiss We will
Loved this video - being VERY close to the SUW you have inspired me to get planning!
You're perfectly placed for doing it in two halves like we did. It struck me later that Diane and I walked down the road from Wanlockhead to Thornhill, to the pub for dinner when we were competing with music festival-goers (I think I might have shown it briefly in the video). Thanks again for your considerate attention last Monday. It made a big impression! Scott
I did my first 300km (C2C2C) ride a couple of months after this, my fitness wasn't quite there in time for the Border March. I only just made it round the C2C2C. If you want to see some BAD weather cycling, see from 8:40 in my video! Are you doing any of Andy's up and coming 200km rides? I'm in these (if I can fix my bike in time - frame is broken!): The Four Tops, Cheviots Coast and Castles, and Copshaw and Solway. Maybe see you there. I think you're a bit faster than me. I like your channel name!
Stuart, I've watched it and many more of your videos. I'm just not as good as you are at communicating. I'm going to subscribe though. They've been very useful in informing my own audaxing progress this year (the 'pothole' episode was a particularly good one). I think rides/events that don't go as well as planned are often most useful. Sorry I didn't get to Mickleton but I think I've got you on video at Milton village hall (I think it was you anyway). I'll have a look at the events you've suggested, but I've been so tired since I finished that 1000 (I should have been away this weekend with Durham City Velo but didn't have it in me). Scott
@@thedurhamcow3535 Hi Scott. You take it easy after that mega ride! That's super impressive!!! I hope to catch up with you sometime at another event, if not at the up and coming rides. I'm sure our paths will cross. :)
Also... You should see the amount of editing I have to do to appear semi coherent! You come across really well in your videos. Stuart :)
Love the videos particularly your style of including info of villages or points of interest you are travelling through it must have taken time to compile and edit. One comment though, can you please leave the text info up on the screen a little longer so that thickos like me read and digest the interesting info. Cheers Jim
So pleased you're enjoying the videos Jim. Whilst I enjoy the physical challenge that cycling offers it's primarily a more enjoyable way of getting to see places of interest. The fitter I am, the further I can go and the more easily I can get there. Such is my enthusiasm for the places I visit that I end up with too much to say and not enough video time in which to say it. The missus constantly berates me for cramming too much info into too brief a space but in order to keep the vids to a manageable length I don't have much choice. It's a good though point and duly noted. I'll try harder. All the best.
@@thedurhamcow3535thanks for the explanation. I will look forward to the next video.
Hi, I live at High Grange, good to see you passing mine and love the scenery. I have never got any further than folly top, but working on it! On a bit of a negative note, might I recommend that you wear a helmet, it might save your life!
I pass through High Grange a lot (almost always downhill!). Glad you like the video. Take care.
Great, interesting ride Scott with wonderful scenery & you were lucky with the weather - despite the wind. I’m looking forward to part 2.
Hope it didn't disappoint... 🙏
Definitely not. Your channel is my favourite cycling content. I’m having to make do watching you until I’m able to ( hopefully) ride again myself after a long - and unfortunately continuing- period of ill-health. You are certainly helping me to maintain hope & enthusiasm that I’ll get back on the bike regularly sometime in the future. Thank you!!
@@KFK1141 That's nice of you to say and very much appreciated - we all need motivation from time to time, even to do the stuff we shouldn't need to be motivated for (if you can make sense of that). I sincerely hope that it's not long before you're back in the saddle. Very best regards. Scott
Thanks Scott. Fingers crossed. Best regards, Kevin.
Loving the camera shots of the aero bars when they start bopping around at the bottom of the screen! The ride itself is a great achievement only wish I was so fit. Chapeau.
My missus has only just got used to the 'bobbing bars'. Thanks for the comment.
Old peculiar me not the beer 🤣🤣🤣

Well done of your ride. My biggest yet is 300km. It's nice to see some of my favourite routes around Durham :)
We are blessed with stunning countryside in Co Durham and lots of cycling choices from great paths to mainly quiet roads.
Amen to that!
Someone's got to be last! Congratulations for finishing 👍👍
Ha, Ha! You're right!
Impressive!
Thanks!
Great video. Reminded me of the 'London Centuries' channel. I've just moved to Durham, so I'll have a close look at your route. I did live near Easingwold and am looking forward to your part 2.
Cheers for the comment. I'm not aware of the London Centuries channel but I like to have a bit of context when watching videos. I'll also be posting a 300 km route which I've called the 'Palatine Pedal'. You might be interested in that. All the best
Great video - with the summer we've had in the North East, you were exceptionally lucky with the weather!
I took some time to check out a decent weather window!
Great, an epic day out. I’m looking forward to day 2.
Well done! I live in Durham too, and recognise much of where you were riding. I shall keep an eye on your routes. I may try a similar route to Berwick and back. There's heaps of fabulous rides around here, but there's always more fantastic places to explore and ride. Are you on Andy's 1000km windy Audax this weekend? I'm not fit enough for that, although I'm helping out at Mickleton. My bike has a broken frame/derailleur hanger, not a bent derailleur as I thought in my snapped chain video. When I get my bike and my cycling legs back, then I'd be up for a ride out. Take care and keep pedalling. Stuart (aka Stuggy :)
I’m typing this from the Kirkby Stephen control of Andy’s 1000. Borders out the way and looking forward to a few hours kip. I’ve watched and enjoyed quite a few of your videos too. Keep them coming. Might pop into Mickleton if the timings are right. All the best. Scott
Looks fun
An area that I cycle regularly (both on and off-road), and walk. Weardale and Teesdale are great counties and you got a lovely weather day for it. I really appreciated the facts popping up on the screen. Great video and route, cheers 🚲🙂👍 Oh, and "territorial chickens" ... 🤣🤣🤣
Sorry about the delay in replying but I equally appreciate the comment. Nice to be able to share the love for our countryside. All the best
i really like your videos this is another great one highlighting those wonderful valleys, I'm a bit further north and have Northumberland on my doorstep. Keep up the great work.
Thanks very much @briansteel4872 - so glad you like them and really appreciate the comment. All the best.
Well done. Really like your knowledge of the area. Thanks for sharing and good luck on the 600
Thanks a lot. I've found that knowing that folks enjoy the videos helps with motivation to complete distances that I'd never previously have considered. All the best
Nice to see Gordon Panicca at the start. Raced against him many years ago 🐐
I really enjoyed the Audax, 2 or 3 hours behind you ! Great video, well put together, really enjoyed.
Thanks for taking the time to watch it Simon, pleased you enjoyed it. Well done to you too. All the best
First of all, well done. What an achievement. And by the look of you during the video, done with relative ease !!. This is probably the most rewarding cycling video that I’ve seen. It’s exactly the sort of riding I’d love to do. Unfortunately, ill-health for 3+ years has prevented me from more than an occasional ride. The scenery was spectacular & the terrain was exactly what I enjoy. I love your channel & it’s really helped me to try & remain positive & hopeful of being able to ride again in the future. One surprise- and concern- for me was you not wearing a helmet !!. I’m pretty sure in your cyclo cross events you were wearing a helmet where I suspect there would be considerably less risk of injury should you come off. Please note this is not a criticism in any way. It just worried me about you riding on open roads, including at night, without head protection. The recent infamous video of Gordon Ramsay was a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of cycling. Mind you the helmet didn’t help his torso judging by the bruising he sustained 😂. Not wishing to end on a negative so I’ll just give you once again my congratulations & respect for a tremendous effort & a great channel. I’m looking forward to seeing your next challenge with anticipation. Thank you.
What a great comment, and thanks for the compliments, though I feel the video was hardly worthy. I am pleased though, to find that there are folks watching them that see the world in a similar to the way I see it, because that's the only way I'm capable of showing it. My objective is always to try to communicate my own experience of the event. On the subject of helmets, or the lack of, it's always a topic that will stimulate conversation: what I'll say is that I'm 'pro-choice' but, as you've already noticed in other videos, I usually wear one. It's not against the rules in audax, and is, in fact, quite common for riders to opt for a cap instead of a helmet. Being comfortable on the bike seems to be the priority. I usually ditch the helmet on warm/hot days but anything else, and back on it goes. Potential speeds, and the proximity of traffic and tarmac are both good reasons to consider wearing one (I never wear gloves either, which are also a good idea in the event of a crash - as would be a good set of motorcycling leathers!). In cyclo-cross I felt far less vulnerable than I do on the roads (even when wearing a helmet). In British Cycling events you're not even allowed to be in charge of a bike without wearing one! Thanks once again for the comment and the thoughtfulness that went into it. Take care. Scott
I was born in Alnwick, lived in Alnmouth, left in 1973. Even now, the hills/fells of Northumberland still look bleak and miserable as ever, I dont get it, theres no beauty in this landscape, even on a bright sunny day, thats why nobody lives there
Well, they say beauty's in the eye of the beholder don't they? Plenty of good folk have described them as bleak, that's for sure but I'm not amongst them. I've lived in and around Durham for most of my life and I'm grateful to have the landscape on my doorstep - even when the clag's down (that's how I learned to use map and compass and got into orienteering). I'd say the hills we have in the North Pennines are perfect for a day out - not too big and not too small. Ideal for running up and down - if that's your thing (it is mine, if I'm not on the bike). Maybe I should do a video to try and convince you! 😄 Thanks for the comment and all the best.
Impressive. I did my first Audax last month, 145km including riding to the start/back - Galashiels. Entered a 200km which is next weekend, Hawick. Just hoping the weather is better then you had 🙂
Nice one, well done. I've had to adopt a completely different attitude to the wet stuff - there's just no avoiding it! All the best for next weekend - what's the event?

Agree about the wind farms; they are a bit menacing. Had my taste of them on the Pacific Crest Trail in Southern California. That being said, I'd rather have us generating the electricity we need that way than dams or coal plants. Excellent videos; perfect mix of scenery and info. Looking forward to the rest!
