    New to the transformer industry but trying to learn everything I can. From what I understand, the hum is both from the core (laminations) and the coil windings, but is primarily from the laminations expanding and contracting with each AC phase cycle via a process called magnetostriction.

    You sould not install crystal IR windows in any swichtgear They do not have a lifetime warranty. -More expensive -they do not withstand impacts and turn black over time (no security) -they have a difference of 87% of the real temperature that they are taking with the camera. -It does not have a good inspection angle.

    "First of all it's important to know that the neutral is the return path for current in the system" - Yes agree. Then... "That current is looking for the least resistance path, back to earth" - What?????

  • @JB-fy3hj
    @JB-fy3hj 8 місяців тому

    "it allows that fault current to travel back to the earth". WYM "back to the earth"? The earth generating the current now?

  • @timglass6514
    @timglass6514 8 місяців тому

    Please make the distinction between “earth ground” vs “equipment ground”. These are two very different things that people often get confused. The neutral is the return path for current under NORMAL operation. However, during a ground fault (a phase hits the metal casing of its motor for example) the neutral DOES NOT CARRY CURRENT INTO THE EARTH. Now, I say none but in reality about .000001% might. The equipment grounding conductor (this will be a green, green/yellow or in residential bare wire) will carry current BACK TO THE SOURCE. In a newly derived system, like the video above, the secondary side of the transformer(we can assume this is going to a factory or feeding distribution lines since it has a neutral (wye transformer)) will have the neutral and equipment grounding conductor bonded. So yes the neutral and equipment bonding conductor are very similar in where they go, but serve different purposes. However, let’s this about this, EARTH GROUND. Yes the neutral and equipment grounding conductor will be bonded and EARTH GROUNDED, meaning a freaking rod (or many rods in the case of a substation) will be driven into the earth. That is earth ground. Earth ground doesn’t mean JACK for fault current. The resistance path back to source is very very low, the resistance path into the ground (relatively) is very high. No freaking fault current goes into the ground. Stop the lies.

    • @poopycrapdog
      @poopycrapdog 7 місяців тому

      No clue why this video got posted lol. He seems confused, the ground is intended to provide a low resistance path for current to get back to the NEUTRAL.. not "into the earth".

      Thanks for the explanation. Also wanted to know why they use earth as a return path for transformer with only one phase tapped?

    • @MathCuriousity
      @MathCuriousity 14 днів тому

      Well I’m this case the earth itself literally conducts electricity and jumps from one ground rod to the next.

    • @MathCuriousity

    Absolutely no current will go to ground. Only in system faults. Current will return to its generative source.

    • @poopycrapdog
      @poopycrapdog 7 місяців тому

      Even during a fault, it will go THROUGH ground, and either back on a neutral through a pole ground or some other bonded point, back to the source. Current will not just magically disappear into the earth.

    Winding temperature device is indeed important. It displays the temperature compensated by load. This is typically the relay that cooling fans are controlled by. If temperatures exceed a predetermined level, the winding temp device will alarm and then trip the circuit breaker, clearing the transformer.

    • @SouthwestElectricCo
      @SouthwestElectricCo Рік тому

      You are correct, provided the alarm is properly working. I would suggest that you have this circuit tested and confirm everything is working correctly. If you should have any further questions, please feel free to email me at ron.nicholas@swelectric.com

    This is very interesting and educational to the public, but there is one minor flaw that affects the quality of the video: audio quality. Part of this could be drastically improved by using a wireless lapelle mic instead of the camcorder's built-in mic. The camcorder mic picks up wind noise and also outside noises from equipment being used in the nearby neighborhood. Also when Mr. Stone turns away from the camera while using the built-in mic, the clarity of his voice is affected. If there's a concern about interference with a wireless mic, you can always combine silent video footage with separately recorded narration after the fact.

    I saw a valve in the bottom of the radiator, what happen if someone open it by accident and leave it open for a weekend?

    • @SouthwestElectricCo
      @SouthwestElectricCo 3 роки тому

      The majority of the oil would drain out of the transformer. The radiators have valves where they are mounted to the transformer. Shutting off these valves allows you to isolate a bank of radiators and drain just the oil in those radiators, so if you need to replace or repair one bank of radiators you don't need to drain the whole transformer. The valves you are asking about are to drain the radiator tubes.

    • @inothome
      @inothome 2 роки тому

      Any valve SHOULD also have a cap or plug after it. So if the valve were to be accidentally, vibrated or purposefully opened the cap or plug would prevent the loss of fluid. Anyone qualified to do maintenance on a transformer would not leave a valve open. At the bottom of a transformer with 10 feet of head pressure and 1 PSI of nitrogen on top there is a lot of pressure that comes out that valve and aside from draining a radiator with it isolated there would be no reason to leave that valve opened.
