Kinda worthless when the horns are gone.
Were you also able to Explore The Building at the Base of the Tower that used to House the Gear ?
great video, I cant believe I came across it - I am just planing this job on my 97 OBS and I have been dreading it, this helps
Our 300-foot TD2 tower had to be taken down as it was starting to tilt in the permafrost in Alaska-Glennallen White Alice site.
Amazing video. Thank you for sharing. I have always wondered what those looked like up close. Well done.
Dead strobe
We have one of these towers here downtown behind the old AT&T office. It's been repurposed for cell use. Looks like this one is used for a 2m and 440 repeater antennas on top. Very cool.
I worked for AT&T for 34 years and spent three years on what was called an: outside construction tower gang. We traveled around the southeast states mostly hanging diversity antennas and patching leaks on the pressurized antennas. Hard work, but it was a good time. Lived in a six man tent, then in a pop up trailer staying mostly in State Parks. Oh to be young again.
It’s weird that these towers only existed in theory, and even then were constructed as flying unicorn feeders set up along their migratory route at that.
Put that in the alley behind my house and a junker in his 1970 pickup truck would have it dismantled and hauled away within a couple of hours. Of course, he’d need to leave the old refrigerators, hot water heater, gas stove and two bicycles with broken frames behind to do that.
Worked these towers replacing waveguide conduits. One worker carried the block and tackle up, one worker carried the start line, one worker carried the tools up to the deck. The block and tackle would be attached to the deck railing, and the start cable run through it and fed downward to the ground crew who then attached it to the capstan on the rear wheel of the truck which is jacked up off the ground. The 8 feet long sections of waveguide were then hauled up on the line from the capstan. Extra attention had to be paid to this as the waveguide went up, the load weight would become less than the weight of the haul rope coming down, speeding up the haul. If not balanced and braked correctly, it would get out of control and the waveguide would come speeding up and shatter the block and tackle. These were dangerous projects, but we were paid very well. A co-worker friend spent his entire career painting these towers, fearless and loved heights. I lasted just one summer as I could not get past my fear.
Really they are Bell Long Line Towers….. AT&T inherited them years and years later.
High-tech pigeon roost.
Very cool video. I'm glad it still has some use with the antennas on top. Seems like a good place to put cell antennas. We have one of these old horn towers on the big hill over our town. I think it still has the horns on it. I see it every day so it blends into the background. Always fascinated me as a grade schooler.
Nice drone work at the top of the tower.
My Grandfather was born just south of that tower in 1895. His birthplace is listed as Lorraine. Hollister Hano was his name and until recently the road was named Hano Road.
Thank you!
Jake, that looks fabulous man. I have a 95 F150 with 327k miles on it and for years, I thought about doing this. Excellent, excellent work!
Road
Hay I live in vancleave but now I'm staying in Mississippi on briarwood roaf
Man I really wanted to see you get that ball joint off of there everybody just says this is how you do it and then they flash to it done I'm sitting here trying to do it I'm beating on this thing with the bfh and I can't break it free
Same.. wtf. Did you get it off? And how..
Bruh I did all this and the turbo will not fucking come out it’s looser than a moose cooter but is just stuck
I see what looks like 3 ham or GMRS repeater antennas.
Big help man! Working on my '95 7.3 right now.
How tall?
Jake, any relation to Frank Graves? Searching for longtime childhood friend, Glenda (Hall) Graves. I knew her at Lenwil Elementary in West Monroe, LA.
Do both beacons on the top of the tower still work or did FAA cut off the power that goes to the beacons because it "dose not reach the required height for a aircraft warning obstruction lighting system"? You know, that BS.
It has a Hughey & Phillips KG-225 (classic white single strobe) and KG-114 (Incandescent Beacon) below it, just shows the beauty of old beacon setups. The KG-225 does not appear to be flashing, so it is safe to say they are shut off.
@@ankor1066 I really hope not.
I hope nothing hits it. I REMEMBER sometimes the Red Beacon incandescent just gives off that Erie glow and doesn't flicker on and off back in dayz on some microwave TOWER. I notice they added the strobes lights and LEDs later on and still have the side mounted lights on side with the AWESOME FAA paint job.
@@elliswoodall407 so the incandescent beacon still works?
@@landontimmons9412 Some did and some didn't.
How the hell they are doing this?
Snow cold
That blade is dull get mine from Dans blades for $16 I cut a 12’ beam with mine
I live in lake zurich illinois and theres one of these by the Costco. They made like 7 of these in the 50s a d like 3 are still in use. Before there was a costo there was Dearborn chemical that owned the tower before it was demolished for townhomes in the 2000s
Thank you I’m about to change my pedestal out And the back pressure valve .. your video helps me a lot thanks
Fred? The big snake?
Used to be one just like this off I-87 near Rockland NY antenna dish things were removed in the mid 2000s. Not sure if it's still there
The rockland, NY tower is still standing it was originally a td-2 site that had sqare antennas before switching over to the cone antennas. American tower corporation painted the tower silver and put cell phone antennas on it, it can be seen on Google maps by the interstate. The rockland site was there since the late 50's or the early 60's.
Looks like it could work
Nice
Hmm wondering why it can't be repurposed for some other transmission use. Such a waste of a massive structure.
There's antennas on the top - so it's being used for something.
I see several what are most likely repeater antennas.
Too bad that the horn antennas are gone. There’s one of these long lines towers near me, still has the horn antennas, along with some modern cell antennas. I’d like to get some video of it like you did. What kind of setup did you use? Impressive quality and great work!
Looks grate I have truck like that and ford bronco but lookalike a lot Work to doet
I still remember when you were a little boy running around the playground, now you're all grown up. Fascinating !
Jake, are you that little boy in the video with the redhair ?
There's a kit now. Less work for the same job. Great looking work here though.

Kit doesn't fit that great. If you use a mechless double din it helps, full size u need to move the metal bracket inside the dash. I wasn't happy with it though. His install is still much cleaner looking
Why not just pull the pedestal
Getting to the rear two bolts isn’t possible.
Update video coming soon.
Update video coming soon. I didnt do much more than paint it. If I had it to do over again I would go with the OBS Interiors kit. This was before I knew it was available.
I think its cool how these videos can take you back in time. Great memories
That’s crazy !! Metra electronics makes a double din kit that looks just like the one u made !! Great job !!! Love it !
I was cute.
Boring waste of time.
Ha! So go watch something else! Lol
