1. Tawang Homestay to Madhuri Lake
Madhuri Lake (Sangestar Tso) is a breathtaking high-altitude lake located at about 12,000 feet, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and vibrant rhododendrons. The lake got its popular name after the Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, who filmed a scene here for the movie Koyla. It's a pristine spot with serene waters reflecting the surrounding beauty.
The journey to the lake was an adventure in itself, with winding roads, sharp turns, and awe-inspiring views of the Himalayas. The place is often dotted with fluttering prayer flags, adding to its tranquil atmosphere.
2. From Madhuri Lake to Bum La Pass
Located at an altitude of 15,200 feet, Bum La Pass is a historic mountain pass on the Indo-China border. This pass holds significant historical importance as it was part of the route used by the Dalai Lama during his escape from Tibet to India in 1959.
The journey was challenging due to rough terrains, but the stunning views of the snow-covered landscape made it worthwhile. We encountered friendly Indian Army personnel here, who are stationed to secure the border. They shared stories of their experiences, adding a personal touch to our visit.
3. Visit to Tawang Monastery
Concluding our day with a visit to the Tawang Monastery was a spiritually uplifting experience.
This is the largest monastery in India and the second-largest in the world, belonging to the Gelugpa sect of Mahayana Buddhism. Founded in the 17th century by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, the monastery houses over 300 monks and features a grand assembly hall, a stunning 28-foot golden statue of Buddha, and a library containing ancient scriptures.
The monastery's location on a hilltop provides panoramic views of the Tawang valley. As we wandered through its corridors, we might have felt the echoes of chanting monks and the calming presence of this sacred space. The architecture, painted murals, and spiritual ambiance make it a symbol of peace and harmony.
Our journey through these incredible locations left us with memories of natural splendor, cultural richness, and deep spiritual connection.
