How to Build a Sphere and Dome with Clay: Part 2
The easiest way to make a sphere or dome entails using clay at the suede-hard and leather- hard stage. Professor Rebekah Bogard walks you through the entire process in a two-part series. Part One covers: working with clay in two different consistencies at the same time (the wet stage in conjunction with suede-hard stage), scoring and slipping, using a pastry bag to apply slip, tips on how to join pieces more efficiently, best ways to use welding coils, alternative ways to use a compass to level your work, how to distort/stretch the shape with a soft rib, and how to dart out pieces of clay to refine the shape. Part Two covers: how to work with clay that is just past leather, how to tell what consistency your clay is, how to match consistencies of clay, how to deal with areas in which you can’t add a welding coil on both sides, and how to use a wooden paddle to refine the shape.
