Uglands - U E C C , Memories from 1988 to 2004.
Photographic memories of my time at sea working for Ugland Car Carriers, which became U.E.C.C. (United European Car Carriers) in 1990. Joined as a "Holiday Relief" Mate in 1988, then had 16+ years as Master until retirement at the end of 2004.

Blue Funnel and Uglands / UECC. All the ships I have sailed on during my 40 years at sea, working for just two companies. They were : 1). Alfred Holt & Co. (the Blue Funnel Line) which, after combining with Glen Line and Elder Dempster Line, became Ocean Fleets. Mainly cargo ships, but including the passenger ship Centaur. 2). Ugland Auto Liners which became United European Car Carriers (U.E.C....
Great montage of your memories, many thanks. I served with different companies but visited the same ports. I ended up living about a mile from Luna Park N Sydney in the '70's
Nice pics.brought back memories I m also sea farer sins1992 I'm sailor Im work worere company most of Greek.vessel
Salty sea dogs ;
sea dog noun literary or humorous uk /ˈsiː ˌdɒɡ/ us /ˈsiː ˌdɑːɡ/ = an old sailor with many years of experience at sea: ex) With his white beard and blue cap he looked like an old sea dog.
Forcados was my first ship as a Deck Boy.Opened up a whole new world for me.Great video thanks.Wish you well.
Which was your favourite Bluey Mike? Mine was the Menestheus
It has to be the Centaur, Mark.
Thanks for that Mike. Was there '72-'87
Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks for this. I was on deck with the Ben Line in the 60's and got to know a few of the Blue Funnel lads. Great days - happy memories.😁
Back again, Great times never to be repeated.
Thank you for a great video that has brought back some fabulous memories. I was an engineer with SS&SA from cadet to 2/E (1971-1982) and then Ch/Eng with Maesrk, Sealink Ferries/Commodore Shipping (1986-1990) and we had a great time on the fridge boats to NZ and Australia plus the Royal Mail runs to South America. All our ships were built mid 50s/early 60s so still had wooden deck coverings and tween decks, specie lockers etc. with union purchase derricks. We were so lucky to sail on well found ships, with decent officers and crews and visited so many great ports around the world.
My dad worked in the engine room on igori.....I remember him carrying me around the engine room no health and safety,I'd be 5 years old . Seeing this brought the smell and rythmic noise back to me like it was yesterday....my dad was Graham Moore.
Where you on the Indianapolis when she had her fire?
Jonathan, I was on the Indi from January 1995 to February 1997, on and off, trading mainly in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. I don't recall any fire when I was there. When did that happen?
Did a trip as second mate in oct 1998, so must have been sometime between our trips. I normally worked on the EMC Nissan city boats.
I went to sea in 1963 as a cadet. Ex Trinity HouseNavigation School, hull. (A company called Alan Black and Co. ex Sunderland, They went defunct during my second year of apprenticiship and I completed it with Trinder, Anderson of London). It brings back some very good and some very sad memories, but all told a Wonderfull way to earn a living. I ended up in Canada with Saguenay Shipping. then a couple of years as a Trinity House Pilot. Then to the oil offshore world. I finished seafaring at age 68 by then I was shifting oil rigs around the world as Tow Master. Many thanks for the memories. Stewart Baker
Great memories! I was with Andrew Weir (Bank Line ) from 1952 to 1963 - Apprentice to Chief Officer, passed Masters, then went into aviation. Rubbed shoulders with many ‘Blue Flue-s’ in Calcutta and other places.
For me these were real ships, I served my time as a ships Rigger. Used to see these cargo boats in the Tyne for repair.
“Those were the days my friends”. Only the advance of years reveals, in the light of the retro scope, just how good! Will we view today in the same light? Martyn 1961 ex Union Steamship Company (NZ) apprenticed Cadet.
So many thanks for those memories: I was an 18 year-old Sparks on my first trip in 1970..... CYCLOPS....5 months....global voyage.... Then 5 years down West Africa: OWERRI, BHAMO, DARU....BELLEROPHON (with a Yellow Funnel! )(And no AIr-Con!) Many Coastals too: Elpenor, Fian,..... Then had a couple of years out before returning as "Freelance R/O" for United Marine Electronics on a wide variety of ships and routes. Did a few years for Island Navigation of Hong Kong...C.Y.Tung Group.) .on their large bulk carriers.(Frank Devitt, Ch.Eng on a couple, ex-Centaur....also Phillip Drake-Brockman....) But some of the memories indicated here....Wow! I need a Tardis.... I wanna go back! Again...Thanks and Cheers.
Thank you, great ships, would be nice to see them being operated again. # HeroesAtSea.
Utterly brilliant

I've just spotted my late father in the picture of the Fire Course in 1995. I remember him telling me about it, he was Captain Tony Matthews.
Yes, your Dad was on the fire course in Hull. Sorry to hear of his passing, will inform the guys at our next Ugland meet up. Never sailed with Tony but met him several times over the years. Nice witty guy, dry sense of humour.
@@michaelharrison6681 Thank you. He passed away 27 April this year. He sailed on the Strada, Trader and the Route was his last ship in about 2002. I remember him talking about Steve Bland - I think i met him once when my mum and I were on the ship with him and also Pete Dickinson whom i definitely remember meeting several times. Yes very witty and very much missed.
Emotional to watch. My father was Capt David Emery of Blue Funnel.
Sailed with your Dad in 1965, just for a few weeks on the coast, on the Autolycus. I was only a Middy at the time and tbh can't remember much about it.
Was deck boy first trip 1958 Mv Menestheus to japan what an eye opener..can still remember being fascinated with it all, only hindered by being berated as a first tripper.....but that only happened the first trip....nothings matched that mind change since...
Super👍👍👍
Did you know marine engineer John Metcalfe. He was on the Centaur in the early-mid 70’s.
Sorry but no, the name doesn't ring a bell. I was on the Centaur from 1972 to 74.
Great stuff - as mentioned in the comments on your other video my old Dad was Blu Flu for many years. Its fantastic to see some of the views that he would have seen. Sadly his last trip was to Kobe in the mid 70's and he lost the sight in one eye after an accident welding on deck.
Great stuff. The Old Man was an AB on Patroclus in the 1950's and LS on Jason 1971- 72. He also sailed on Hector which was Ironic as he was RN in WW2 and was sunk by the Japs on HMS Hector (the 11th HMS Hector) which was an Armed Merchant Cruiser requisitioned from Alfred Holt. AKA The Welsh Navy.
I saw the m/v Prometheus picture in the other channel⚘👍
🙏🙏🙏👍👏👏👏👏👏⚘❤
I sailed to the far east on the MV Glenorchy in 1969 , her second last trip sadly before the 'breakers'. My only deep sea voyage I am sorry to say but the thing still got in my blood. Learnt so much about ships and also about people . Fond memories and I would it again, maybe better next time . .
Thank you very much Michael for this evocative glimpse into the past days of non-container ships. I was a snotty in Port Line in the early 70's, when it was Blue Star Port Lines, and I wish I had taken more photos at the time. My excuse is that I was too busy soojying the bulkheads or red leading the bilges. I spent 3 years fishing out of Hull, mainly in J Marr & Sons sidewinders, my excuse then was I was too wet, or too knackered, (18 hours on, 6 off) to think of photos, and also I spent some time in home trade ships as an uncertificated 2nd mate, before it all vanished and I joined the Royal Marines to get some more adventure. Then I sailed in the Grey Funnel line, but that was not as much fun as those early ships. Loved the Merch. Miss it very much. Great shipmates.
Lovely photos. Takes me bacy to my time at sea. In the sixties I started stevedoring in Buenos Aires. see:- ua-cam.com/video/wQuCcBva6uM/v-deo.html
Glad you liked it Robert. Did you ever come across a guy called Hugh Buchanan in B.A? He was 3rd Mate with me when I was Mate on the Sonia M, a Trans Maritima Mexicana ship. Hugh became Operations director for Agencia Maritima Nabsa in B.A. in the 80s, or is that long after you were there?
My husband was on duty on cardigan shairetoo in the late sixties.
My husband was on duty on elphino attached to oceon fleet.he was sent for training by Sri Lanka n government.at the time lwas a student nurse at at Paul's eye hospital.old hall Street Liverpool . that s where I met him. I used to write to him at various ports. Remember one ship to be elpeno. He started as a first engineer.he did some studin at southsheild lthink.lt was o love ly time for both of us he got all h iss exams. Back to Sri Lanka or Ceylon was working as a chief engineer at ship s own by the state . Later he worked as deputy technical manager at shipping corporation .lost him in nineteen eight y nine.age for tyseven.wonder any one of you remember him.
Hi Princey, I never met any Sri Lankan engineer with your Subasinghe surname during my time with Ocean Fleets. Sorry to hear of your loss at such a relatively early age. Those I actually sailed with were Prince Saverimutto, Ranjith Gurugamage, and Rudi ....? Those I met in Liverpool, Shanti Goonewardene, Kushi ....?. There is a FB group page called Blue Funnel for Old Timers, maybe someone on there may have known your late husband. Sri Lanka been on tv news last few days, hope you are managing OK with all the problems at the moment.
Hi s name was dayananda manatunga . used to call him Daya.
My husband husband know Shanthi gunawardena .we are facing abad period . at the moment. All are staying in door for not able to get out not having gasoline and food shortage so sorry about the situation.thank for replying.
Sorry Princey, I still don't recognise the name. I believe Shanti passed away a couple of years ago. Prince Saverimutto lives in Perth, West Australia. Stay safe, the world has changed, not for the good unfortunately. 🙏
Much appreciated memories from one of the India Buildings and BBS staff
Back to my memories of sailing days Indian sailor
Absolutely brilliant film, in fact, it has made me decide to have a beer or two!!
Brilliant put together ....great stuff
Wonderful Company. My last ship was the Melampus, 1963/64. My first was Elepenor, 1962. Great Company and Liverpool a wonderful City. Great memories. Nothing like seeing a Blue Flu ready for deep sea with her derricks horizontal and ship full loaded ready for the off. Did 3 deep seas to Far East. Great crews. Love the term “ship shape”. Alfred Holt & Co had high standards, Shame it’s all just memories now.
Sir, thank you so much for posting. What wonderful photos. You would have worked hard in your years at sea, but I bet you had a bloody good time as well! Cheers.
Great memories of being on board some of those ships as a kid. You may know my father Capt John Fielden who was also with Blue Funnel / Elder Demster and sailed on the Menelaus, Memnon, Myrmido etc.
I did know your Dad, Matt. I never sailed with him but I can remember one occasion when we were going to attend a course in Liverpool on a Monday morning. We met up on the Sunday night and the two of us decided to go town for a Chinese meal in Chinatown. Went into a bar for a drink first. After a while we were asked to leave as the locals thought we were detectives (because we had jackets and ties on!) and that we were making them feel uncomfortable. We left for our dinner. He was a great guy Matt.
@@michaelharrison6681 That’s great to hear Capt. He was certainly fond of a nice Chinese..
You must feel so lucky to have sailed on ships during the most beautiful era of ship design.
Mike it was an absolute pleasure sailing with you on the Autosun; fond memories on the portbury run with Yourself, Gareth and Johnny FP. Remember the time when Gareth accidentally shut down the wrong engine on the way into shearness when you called down for two after a slow overnight run on one prop, brilliant stuff LOL. I loved working with UECC on the S-Class, great times. These days I am captain of my own strange beast, a ship with legs. We earn our crust working in wind farms and maintaining oil and Gas platforms. I hope you are enjoying retirement. All the very best, Captain.
Hi, can’t recognise you from your photo, it’s so small on my tablet. You will have to give me a clue, I.e. name and where from. A lot of people passed through during my four years on the Autosun. Cheers, Mike H.
@@michaelharrison6681 rob Clarke Autosun about 2004 time
Ah, Rob, got you, 3rd mate from Norwich! Now you have told me I can make you out on your photo. Dont know if you saw my other two vids, one was Memories of Blue funnel and the other Memories of Uglands-UECC. Hope you don't mind but I used a couple of your photos, thank you. Hope all well with you, I presume with your title name, you have taken up flying?
@@michaelharrison6681 that’s no problems Mike, I have taken up flying and have the FlightMariner UA-cam channel and Flightmarienr website now which is going well. Love flying for the hobby really still using the sea to pay for it. Where are you these days
I'm still in Hull, meet up with other UECC guys every two months though of course not in the last 16 months. Did you see the uecc slideshow? I'll check your site out on UA-cam . You have your own plane or share in one? Expensive hobby.
I’m no mariner but this is fascinating! Thanks!
Excellent video, enjoyed every minute, some great destinations on great ships.
Thanks for the post. I have started looking up the ships I sailed on, all gone to scrap now. I was ships cook, & like a captain, the ship couldn't sail without a "cooks ticket"!. They were indeed happy days with loyal shipmate's . It took a time to adjusting to being a land lumber!
Most interesting and enjoyable. They were a "top draw" company during my time at sea, (1967/79) and I sailed twice in Sugar Line with a Chief Mate, Arther Longbottom ex BF from Liverpool whose heart was definitely with Blue Funnel Thanks for the memories
Excellent
Container ships destroyed the golden shipping age, where are all those beautiful vessels.I want to go back in time.seamen life at it's hay days now replaced with cheap philipino army of seamen.
