    Hey, I’ve been up here for 35 years and found that shipping vis Carlile freight via their Alaskan resident program solved all my shipping needs inexpensively. Right now I’m shipping a twin mattress, 44 in. X 14 in. x 14 in from Tacoma to Anchorage for $35 and will take a few days to get here. I’ve shipped larger lithium batteries with hazmat decals, ammunition, primers, you name it. They are great! Their website will direct you to. It’s a free membership, I just can’t remember the name of it.

    Floor jack / bottle jack. I'd likely leave it until the storm passes. You could always put in a few hundred gallons of water if you have it available to anchor it for the time being. Once up on the jack, use a truck in 4x4, low range to slowly pull it back into place. We used a floor jack and logs to move our coop across our 4acres in North Pole. Best of luck!

      I very much like the idea of using water to add weight to the building. I have several 15gal totes I use in the greenhouse as a heat battery. That would add almost 500# of ballast to the building. I tried the farm jack out today and was able to easily lift the building, and later I know the tractor will be able to lift it as well for repositioning. Thanks for the suggestions!

    • @maysrg
      @maysrg 10 днів тому

      How were the House parts connected to the brackets? If nails or screws, make larger holes in brackets and wooden parts, then use bolts. I think using the tractor to lift it would be good, but only after wind stops. Perhaps you need to make an actual concrete foundation for additional weight.

    • @alaskanhomesteading
      @alaskanhomesteading 10 днів тому

      The Brackets weren't attached yet. But it wouldn't have really mattered, because the Brackets also aren't attached to the blocks. Those bolts just rest in a hole in the top of the block. I really didn't (and still don't) want to pour a concrete pad there. But we will definitely need to anchor the building to prevent this happening again.

      @ well I understand and if you heat your house with wood … just do what other people have done… run pipes the their shops and greenhouses…. They use big boilers though but every house has a boiler … it’s called the water heater… it’s just not used to heat the house … just wasted heat sitting … and the big boilers run for a day before needing a reload… but take a water heater and hook it to a wood stove wet hi electric back up to heat the boiler when you’re not reloading the stove… I know you paid little money for the heater… not sure how much you use it but you still pay for the fuel and electric for it that adds up…

    • @EdZirul

    • @johnclyne6350
      @johnclyne6350 12 днів тому

      Dave thanks for posting what not to do. Personally it seems your set up was driven by price (like a lot of people). I’ve seen some Firman generators in my passing as a utility lineman for the local power company. All I know is your genny is LOUD! It’s not uncommon for propane generators to take two or three tries to get them started. No handle for inside on your garage door? An over sight I’m sure? Something to put on your list of things to do. Then the cord for the genny laying in the grass? Not hanging up with a boot over the plug? Not a good idea? That’s a tripping hazard for folks like me that may need to turn off your genny? I know your main disconnect had two switches. The one toggle was for utility power was still in the “on” position. Walking in the dark on your ice covered driveway was deffinately stupid? Not only the risk of falling but the risk of a widow maker broken high up in a tree falling on you if the wind dislodged it? Our set up is a roll out genny in a locked enclosure. My wife can start it remotely in our basement. She never has to go outside. If it runs out of fuel my paid friend will come over to refill it. I keep more gas in my shed than you do in your out buildings. We have a Honda inverter generator that is fuel injected than run our entire house. Safety was the driver in my house. Cost comes dead last. I know you have money if you have a big tractor in your hoop building. I’m just saying. Our priorities are different. I’m usually already at work when the lights go out at home. Thanks for posting.

    • @alaskanhomesteading
      @alaskanhomesteading 12 днів тому

      @johnclyne6350 Just to put your mind at ease, that transfer switch is ALSO a main service disconnect, but in its operating mode, it is fully isolating the generator from the utility side. There is no danger to linemen presented by this setup, and in fact there is an additional main disconnect at the boundary of the property where the meter base is installed. This setup was certainly at least partially driven by price, but also evolvability and practicality. The ATS I installed there will let me upgrade to an automatic standby generator when the time is right. That time may be soon, with the recent prevalence of wind storms that cause utility outages. But overall our power is very stable here, and I have rarely needed to use the generator. Less than once per year in fact. So it would have been wasteful to spend several thousand on a fully automated setup initially.

    • @Sidicas
      @Sidicas 12 днів тому

      @@alaskanhomesteading My setup started as a 2 Kilowatt UPS on a Sump Pump to provide battery backup when the power is out with automatic switching from mains to battery so that the basement doesn't flood and it only costed me about $750. Then the power often would go out at times when the sump pump wasn't needed and I started plugging lights, chargers, laptops, monitors, etc. into that UPS and I had a solid 36 hours or so of power. Then I added another UPS to it for $500 to increase maximum power output to 4 kilowatts so I can use the garage door openers, window air conditioner, and some other high powered motor things which would last me about a day or so which usually was enough. Then I added a bunch more batteries for more runtime at a cost of only about $150 per kilowatt hour of capacity and a kilowatt hour is enough to run my 90 watt deep freezer for 10 hours. Recharging the whole thing off of mains is a lot cheaper than burning any kind of fuel in a generator to recharge it but I still want to plan for a situation of a 4+ day power outage situation. couple of times in the past 10 years I have used my car to recharge it because of a 4+ day power outage. In total, it was only about $2000 as it is with automatic switching being a core feature of an UPS since day 1. No electrician or plumber needed.

    Great video. Was thinking about putting this kit on my EFI, and was wondering if you tried starting it with the recoil when the battery is fully spent? Curious because it seems the fuel pump primes when the key is on and if the battery is spent would that affect starting by hand?

    • @alaskanhomesteading
      @alaskanhomesteading 17 днів тому

      @@littleGeis In theory, spinning the engine with the recoil should run the stator and get some juice to the fuel pump, but I haven't tried this. The battery-less mountain sleds start just fine on just a recoil pull, so maybe it would be fine?

    I swear to Christ, if I see one more video of someone using brake cleaner in or on a source of heat, I’m going to loose my $hit. Brake cleaner is for BRAKES. Tetrachloroethylene and benzine are carcinogenic by themselves, when you heat them, you get phosgene gas. What is this gas you say? Phosgene gas is a highly toxic, colorless gas with a musty odor often described as smelling like freshly cut hay, used primarily as a chemical intermediate in industry, but historically notorious as a deadly chemical warfare agent due to its severe lung-damaging effects when inhaled; it is considered a "choking agent" and can cause pulmonary edema (fluid buildup in the lungs) even at low concentrations. STOP IT! JUST STOP IT!

    There’s a hole next to the glow plug this hole blocks up and the heater will fail to start. You can clean that hole out without stripping the heater down or having to remove the glow plug. All you need is to remove the rubber boot on the glow plug hole and with a bent bit of wire locate the hole and poke the wire in it to clear it. Now this is an issue with this design of a heater and they do leak co2 into the hot air out let. The main course of this is exhaust back pressure so if you have a long exhaust run it’s more likely to soot that hole up and the heater will carbon up inside.

    In my humble opinion there are too many inconsistencies with the quality of the heaters which can make troubleshooting a little tricky. By that I mean that sometimes you get a good one and other times you get one that doesn't function correctly. I have 3 that look identical, however they do NOT operate at the same level of efficiency. My 1st unit sooted up after a very short time and began to give errors. I still haven't taken it apart, and I don't remember what temperature it operated at when it actually worked. The 2nd unit has been running flawlessly now for 60 days of 24/7 use and the internal temperature reads 405°f pretty consistently. The 3rd unit has worked flawlessly as a backup. However it's internal temperature varies between 325°f and 380°f. The internal temp will rise as you increase the heat settings. I have only ever run clean diesel or home heating oil. Great video!

    FWIW, just from the brief glimpses of your fuel filter, it looks like it's installed backward. The filter will work in either direction but if used in the backward direction, the debris and sediment you are filtering will be collected on the inside of the filter element (the side you can't see) and it defeats the purpose of the clear housing because the filter will always look clean. I changed all my led screens to the blue screens with the spanner in the top left hand corner and the led remote, which allows access to the special settings menu. The heater ecu also has to be the blue board with the bi metallic silver strip tuning across it, I now burn exclusively kerosene instead of diesel and service the burners every summer cleaning the chambers by filling with oven cleaner leaving to soak for about half an hour then rinsing with water 3 times, this removes any large carbon deposits trapped in the burner. I then blow the burner dry with a heat gun and resemble.

      @@firashejazi2869 I understand, yes. I don't know the answer as far as hours, but the general guidance seems to be to run at higher levels to avoid coking.

      @alaskanhomesteading No i think in level 4 is good for consumption of diesel and 90% burning...if you search on China website they told that. Have a good day

    There is also a screen in the other holes you were jamming that tool in, and if you damage that, you will have to replace the whole burner. The best way to clean that screen out is to burn the entire end, and get it red hot. Mine starts up like that too, and usually after I haven't used it consistently. It usually always starts, after the second attempt. I've had it apart several times and still can't figure out why. It has always come apart clean tho with very little soot, and for the most part it is on low, with an occasional high run to warm things up quickly. (I live in Western Wa State.) If you coat the gaskets with graphite, they come off without damage every time. I've had my 2k for about three years and I love it but I can't run it unless it is below 40f.

    Did you consider running a copper or aluminum exhaust pipe line from heater at an angle across a longer space to near the ceiling then exiting building so heat radiation loss is to the inside of building rather lost going directly outside?

    • @alaskanhomesteading
      @alaskanhomesteading 2 місяці тому

      @@guestguide2544 I have heard mixed things about that. Some people mention potential issues with excess exhaust back pressure from this. But I've also seen people run the exhaust through an old radiator, soooo.....

      HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT WHY THEY DO NOT USE COPPER FOR CAR EXHAUST? The reason is it is against the law in some countries and gives off a poisonous gas at high temperatures.

    Have you ever had it to where it’s a little rough to change the gears? Instead of smooth changing from r to n to h or low

      @CodyGleason-p6q yes. It's actually acting up again, and I am wondering if I didn't tighten things well on my last adjustment. It's going to take some fine tuning I think.
