Glider and Tow Plane Signal Demonstration
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
A demonstration of some common ground and airborn signals. Video created at St. Louis Soaring Association. Ground signals demonstrated; open towhook, close towhook, raise wingtip, take up slack, begin takeoff. Airborn signals demonstrated; Something wrong with glider, glider release immediately, towplane turn left, decrease tow speed, increase tow speed. For more information about these signals...

    The rudder waggle in your film is in error. What the tow pilot did was a tail yaw which mans tow plane cannot release. Rudder waggle is a "flutter" not a yaw....please correct...Thanks for the effort.

    No fancy hand signals or tail waggling needed on the ground…. Take off: In France glider pilot makes a short radio call to indicate they are ready. Then the tip is kept down until slack is taken up. Then the wing is brought to horizontal. In Germany and in New Zealand they use the radio. Commands are in the line of: take up slack, all out, or stop stop. . After take off: If tow plane wants glider to release then it rocks the wings. If the glider behaves dangerously like kiting above the tow plane releases. If there is a problem with the glider on release, the glider does waggle the tail so it clearly yaws left and right. Depending on the situation the glider tries to release again. Then there is the option that both glider and tow return to the airfield and if needed glider and tow plane land together.

    I love this. Just built a Condor control panel for use in my club's sim, which uses a retired aircraft cockpit. It's criminally underused and I thought a control panel with clearly labelled keys would be one barrier to entry fewer for the instructors - now they won't need to memorise keyboard shortcuts. I used a thumbstick to provide a snap-view function (via mouse movement) that works horizontally and laterally. I think your approach is better - using a car seat(?) instead of an aircraft is another barrier to entry removed - and more comfortable! I have ambitions to build a flight control system with rudimentary control loading (primarily, realistic trim) which will fit into the base of an Ikea POANG armchair for that reason.

    • @Jim_St_Clair
      @Jim_St_Clair 3 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind comments. My first prototype was scrapped because it was too hard to get in and out of. I think comfort is important. Same for the control system including the snap-view function need to be obvious. Asking someone to learn to fly gliders and how to learn to control a simulator is twice the barrier to learning.

    I'd like to build something like this for me or propose it to my glider club. Could you make a list (the models, with some e-commerce link if you can) of the main articles that you suggest to use to have a quite realistic result for real pilots or students that want to make practice : e.g. stick, sudders, spoilers? Thanks

      This is something I can work on but not sure when I will get to it. This is basically a Logitech HOTAS control stick base, T-rudder Mark IV, a disassembled Logitech throttle quadrant, and a USB control board (Reyann Zero Delay Arcade USB Encoder Pc)

    I'm attending a glider pilot course and I've still some difficulty to properly follow the towing plane. Do you think condor simulator could help to make practice?

    • @Jim_St_Clair

      Definitely. Condor simulates towing well. I'm sure it will help you with this. Plus you can practice boxing the wake.

    Great but changing view with buttons.. you could use Arduino + gy-85 sensor to track view by head. It is extremely chip and worth to add.

    • @Jim_St_Clair
      @Jim_St_Clair 3 роки тому

      Thanks for the suggestion. The idea is that pilot will usually just turn their head to the side and look at the left or right monitors. This should be enough for landing practice.

    • @СергійГлуздовський
      @СергійГлуздовський 3 роки тому

      @@Jim_St_Clair For landing probably yes. But in condor I usually look at the clouds above me to figure out where the thermal could be. I just offered this because this is really easy and cheap to repeat. A lot of tutorials on the internet and ready to use firmwares for MCU. I done it recently for myself. But I have 1 monitor. May be with 3 monitors it is not so necessary :)

      The flight stick is a Logitech HOTAS base with a home made (PVC Pipe) handle so that it resembles the kind of stick seen in gliders.
