Saving Salmon, Saving Ourselves: Building Thriving Communities in the PNW
Making sure that salmon can thrive and return to the Pacific Northwest is about creating sustainable, thriving human communities while also recovering salmon.
Jason Mulvihill-Kuntz, Salmon Recovery Manager for the Lake Washington/Cedar/Sammamish Watershed, shares that by doing what we need to do for salmon, we’re also helping ourselves. And that together we can take on and create solutions for the big challenges in our watersheds.

Amy Grondin, commercial fisherman and owner of Duna Fisheries LLC, understands the importance of coming together to find solutions and take actions that will make sure that salmon return to our Pacific Northwest waters not just next season but for generations to come, because if we don't have salmon, we "don't have anything."

Saving Salmon by Cooling the Waters of the Lake Washington Ship Canal
Переглядів 2,2 тис.10 місяців тому
Increasing development around Puget Sound and warming waters are making it increasingly difficult for salmon to survive their migration from the open water through the Lake Washington Ship Canal and to their spawning grounds. Salmon need us to act now to cool the waters of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. Long Live the Kings and their partners are exploring innovative solutions to bring colder w...

The Hood Canal Steelhead Project, Explained
Переглядів 510Рік тому
Hood Canal Steelhead were listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 2007, with just hundreds of fish returning to rivers that once supported tens of thousands. Thanks to an innovative research and hatchery project formed as a collaboration between nonprofits, governments, Tribes, and the Hood Canal community, we've been able to put Hood Canal steelhead on a path to survival. Lear...

Urban Estuary Restoration at Vigor
Переглядів 865Рік тому
Can a working shipyard in the heart of Seattle's industrial waterfront offer healthy habitat for juvenile salmon? At their Harbor Island facility, Vigor is constructing 2.6 acres of estuary habitat to support Duwamish River salmon on their migration to the ocean. Long Live the Kings and the UW's Wetland Ecosystem Team are partnering to monitor the site before and after restoration, gathering da...

Salmon will pass that garbage dump in few hours or less, someone will be collecting nice checks for years to come
I would like to see the site of the pulp mill in Tacoma rehabilitated into estuary habitat for salmon and Steelhead. I hope that there's some sort of project planned. I've lived in the Puyallup River Watershed all of my life an watched as development has destroyed habitat and countless opportunities to help salmon and Steelhead have been ignored in favor of growth and tax revenue.
I don't recall you saying how many Steelhead were tagged but I know it wasn't every Steelhead smolt so if 16% of the tags were eaten I can only guess the number of untagged fish that were eaten is at least twice that number?
Hows the project going? Is there any information on how these fish are doing and if any of them were able to spawn in 2022 or 2023? It was to my knowledge that Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group did this exact same supplementation project ~15 years ago with failed outcomes. The supplemented fish had no survival instincts and weren't able to adapt.
Lol y'all cause more problems then solving them...
Can we get an update on this
it not the seals it's the indians.
Beyond the research, what will NOAA do to rectify the situation? Clearly, either seals must be limitied in their interaction in the estuary or the smolts need to be transported from the stream out to the Ancerson Island area for release. Without action, the research becomes a wasted effort. (IMHO).
Amazing
Thank you for working hard for everyone!! 🎣 🌲 🌧 🏙
Thank you!
That’s cool to see this being used to help herring. You were saying the timing of the runs we have don’t go along with timing of food. I have heard that the original king runs of Salish Sea returned earlier in spring and summer vs August and September. Coho we’re later returning before chum. Then we had steelhead😢
Thank you! I caught one of your fish on 7/2/21. It had a coded wire tag that I looked up. It was about 7 pound Chinook and was three years old. I caught it near James Island so only a few miles from where it was released. Well done!
well if you want to have more fish for the orcas and have biger runs take care of seals carmarantz Canada is already doing so decrease seals and sealions will bring back more bait fish also I see seals bust through schools of hering did you know seals and sealions eat 5× more to equal the body mass
Those ARG fish are garbage Do they even make real redds(as defined by WDFW snow creek criteria). Lastly, do smolt recapture efforts support the amount of digs you're calling "redds"?
Just subscribed love the content
All? That river has been closed for public fishing in 6 years and counting.
Thank you guys for the work you put into this. Would be awesome to have a puget sound steelhead fishery again like the stories my grandpa has told me about Nisqually and puyallup back in the day🙏🏻
Awesome! Hope it creates a fishery we all can enjoy.
Thanks for putting this on UA-cam to watch. Would not have been able to watch otherwise. Crazy how a fishing platform can draw thousands of responses and views within an hour. But when it comes to the science and education of how to keep it all here, you guys only a few views and lil responses. Maybe more of a permanent presence with weekly updates of projects and upcoming projects would get more people involved. Thank you for all the work you do and don’t take this as a complaint but just a outside look at how we need to get these issues and solutions publicized regularly so it makes a stronger presence.
This fish killing catastrophe needs to go! If you cannot trust the operators to follow permit requirements, how can we all trust them to operate this facility in a way not to kill fish. 25 mw is not worth the continual mortality on chinook and steelhead in the Puyallup system. If we can do the Elwha, if we are ready to do the Klamath, we can do the Puyallup!
The fish in the Puyallup are being killed by industrial runoff of PCBs and PBDes so says Sandra O'Neill lead biologist at WA state Dept of Fish and Wildlife. As well the Puyallup Tribe might consider lowering their take of the returning Chinook Salmon to increase the runs and feed the Orcas.
Educate yourself before you talk trash. The Electron is NOT a dam. It is a low level riser that makes a pool in the river. The river is free to run around the side of it. The pool is used to allow some water to be directed into a flume. Electron has built a costly fish ladder in the river, that was not required. And also a fish hatchery that has returned two different salmon species to the river. Also not required. They paid for all of it . Electron has also supplied low cost power to the Puyallup. tribe for nearly a century. But the tribe has never restored salmon runs Ect. A hired sub contractor had released astro turf into the river on a one time only basis. It was not done by Electron. People like you just stir shit up with no brains behind it.
So we need to kill a few, is this the research to get that done?
Hello from the Duckabush good friends, So good to see you all and get the latest news, you each did an excellent job. I loved seeing the Lake Cushman release process and I am interested in the thoughts on seal population management. Look forward to visiting you sometime soon. With lotsa love-David Boone
Thirty years ago I ran into an old boy, probably in his seventies while steel head fishing the Dose. He blamed the decline of salmon and big trout on that bridge. His thoughts were that the bridge kept killer whales out which allowed the seals to overpopulate eating all the fish. Back then there were easily several hundred seals living down at the mouth of the Dose. In the early nineties there was a resurgence of the summer runs int he the Dose, Duck and Skoke. I often wondered if it had anything to do with the bridge collapse in the late seventies.
Learned something today!
Really great explanation; very clear. Thanks a lot.
Very informative! Thanks for educating us, Iris!
Well done. Great research.
Nice visual!
