I always wondered if this was a reference to the world theme from mario 3
Hard to tell, probably not. The soundtrack consists of some sort of sample music library, from which specific themes were selected and repurposed for this game. It just fits. The creator has a really great music choice, causing the scenes from the game to be iconic and memorable.
