EVERY old lathe NEEDS this modification! - How to fit a power feed unit to a metal lathe.
Welcome back. Over the last few years, I have rescued this metal lathe from a scrapyard and fully restored it. It is a Halifax 524, a slightly heavier clone of an Atlas lathe. When I got it, it was missing everything from the motor, electronics, chuck, and toolpost, and even the upper countershaft had to be fully remade.
One of the main missing parts was the change gears and banjo assembly, meaning the lathe had no working power feed. This electronic version allows much greater control of speeds and feeds, even adapting while the lathe is cutting. This lets you change the speeds to remove chatter etc.
Having now used this for a while I can say that it is an absolute game changer for turning large pieces or repetitive work. Being able to suddenly reverse and use the rapid traverse button is extremely helpful. The only downside is that you can no longer do single-point threading, but I don't mind because mine couldn't do that anyway!

Is this a bad idea!? - Making an EXTRA long double Pneumatic Drum Sander
Переглядів 157Рік тому
In this video, I make an extension shaft to fit two air-filled drums onto a large three-phase industrial bench grinder. This pushed the capacity of the Halifax 524 (Atlas lathe clone) to the max, with the tailstock slightly hanging off the end of the bed ways. This sander will be fitted with a VFD for variable speed and rotation direction sanding. This machine is to be used in the production of...
A Solution For Moving Big Gas Cylinders?
Переглядів 172Рік тому
These cylinder skates were made to help with a big project involving moving and manipulating large gas cylinders for installation. The skates moved the cylinders freely around the factory's concrete floor with little effort and allowed the cylinders to be rotated prior to craning into position. Making Custom Cricket Bat Maker's Tools - How To Fabricate Clamps for Glueing Cricket Bats
Переглядів 73Рік тому
Welcome back to Shepheard Industrial. Today we are doing a production run making 30 custom cricket bat clamps. These are used by Batmakers to aid in clamping the bats while the handle is being glued in. These clamps are to be used when making new custom bats, but also when rehandling old used ones to bring them back to life. Standard types of clamps exert too much pressure on the side faces of ...
Cutting Corners to Speed Things Up - When a Project Involves a Little Bit of Everything
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
Today we're making a tool for shearing the corners off of steel parts. The idea is to remove the bulk of material ahead of grinding to smooth parts off. This could be done with a grinder, but for long runs of parts this does speed it up a bit. The punch plate is made from a leaf spring, and the punch itself is made from EN8 steel. They are heat treated to hopefully increase their longevity. The...

    Just finding your video after searching around. Figured it would be cheaper if not the same price to retrofit an electric lead screw then replace my broken control box for the mechanical lead screw. Any way you can give me your exact dimensions or a print of the adapter shaft?

      That's absolutely right! I made it by copying lots of other designs I found online. I've been really enjoying using it for projects like this. They do need quite a high pressure blower to get good performance though..

    I reallylike this idea. I am going to do the same to my Clausing 100 lathe. I do have a question. Did you drill and tap the end of the lead screw or did you just cute it down to sise and use a die to thread it? Also there is a keyway in the bronze gear and shaft. Did you cut a keyway in the adapter shaft? Thanks

    • @ShepheardIndustrial
      @ShepheardIndustrial 9 місяців тому

      Hi there, great question. The lead screw already had a threaded portion sticking out, so I attached the piece I made with a threaded hole and a jam nut. The brass gear on the power feed unit is not keyed in place, just held with compression from a nylock nut. So in a crash situation, or too heavy of a load, the brass gear actually slips on the shaft, just a little extra safety feature to stop the carriage half nuts stripping out (they are Zamak castings on this lathe)

      I can't thank you enough for your reply. Your video is the only one I have found that is doing this modification. My Clausing is all cast iron and I have already made another half nut out of cast iron. My lead screw is not threaded so I may try to pin it with a soft shear pin. Again, thanks for the rapid reply.

    Nice work and properly done. Rob Gunter method is the way to go. My main anvil is similar to the anvil here in your video. I got it at a barn sale in Holland, NY in May 2001 for $65.00 So far I have used it as is and see no need to do anything to it as it is in great shape. Peter Wright 2 - 1 - 17

    Buddy I've watched a tremendous amount of making draw knife videos and I am at a loss for words, this is to me what a draw knife should look like, I am totally amazed at the craftsmanship in this knife,I've seen what high quality ones sell for and it's jaw dropping, but this one I would imagine me paying that price for this one. In other words"fantastic work".

    Very interesting forging process. Your use of camping firelighters has given me a good idea for smokeless starting of charcoal, thanks for that; (gotta keep the neighbours happy). I have limited access to scrap steel, so made mine from a common tool used here in Asia; an old Machete. It turned out to be extremely useful.

    Another idea, having looked at your video portfolio. How about a profile following attachment for your lathe? You've got the power feed (although be aware of wearing out the lead screw) so a profile follower attached to the cross slide should allow faster turn round times on identical turning jobs. May be more useful to you than my ELS idea!

    • @ShepheardIndustrial
      @ShepheardIndustrial Рік тому

      That’s a brilliant idea, I’ll have to give that a try one day. Like you say that would be very handy for repeat profile turning!

  • @bobuk5722
    @bobuk5722 Рік тому

    Make it better? An Electronic Lead screw (search 'Lathe ELS'). Instant push button or touch screen selection of feed or screw cutting rates. Various ones available, I have James Clough's push button one and it's worth its weight in gold. Does metric and imperial feeds and threads. Takes time to put together but comes in at a reasonable cost. There are other offerings available, some of which are more comprehensive - ie automatic screw threading and also taper turning. Some are metric only so take care if choosing. Incidentally, I've never sen any one else implement your power feed mod.

    • @ShepheardIndustrial
      @ShepheardIndustrial Рік тому

      I have had a look at some others creations and I agree an ELS is superior especially for threading. Well done for doing one of those! I looked into the clough42 one myself, but ended up giving this a go as I haven’t seen a video of anyone trying this before

    Greetings. Thanks for the nice videos and nice projects you show us. I could not stop noticing that you use your flypress bits/dyes/tools without a stopper. I learned the hard way to not insert tools in the flypress' ram without a stopper. I got a tool stuck there and it was not easy to remove it. Later on I learnt from experienced blacksmiths, never to use flypress tools without a stopper and not allow the tool shank to touch the bottom of the "tool hole".
