I feel like sara from the OVA would be one of the best ways to write Amy. Maybe with a bit taken from SA1 and Sonic Boom.

Simple, Moderation, she can be both, she already matured in recent games, let her keep that crush / fan girl nature but make it light like teasing or playful banter when appropriate, and she can be independent too, but have her tomboyish and likable rather than what Boom tried to do, it's entirely possibly, but, SEGA and Sonic Team work on Extremes, if their even a minor problem, they'll go over the top to fix it instead

Amy was perfect in SA1. Ive always thought writing her a bit like Boa Hancock or Bartolomeo would be funny, have the same concept but keep the same charm. I do like the concept of her being a bratty, rich toy girl from the city obsessed with sonic, but i also like the idea of her caring about others, nature, and keeping the peace like she was in SA1. Also, anyones opinions on how amy was handled in archie?

The fans just don't know what they want, that's all. Before she changed, Amy was being pointed out by everyone, calling her a scary yanderer who doesn't want to understand that Sonic doesn't like her. People also find her annoying that she chase him all the time and hit him with his hammer. Now that her character has been toned down, people want her to go back to her old self before they probably want her to change again and so on.

Boom Amy is too much of a little feminist. It’s annoying😓. My favorite Amy is personally Frontiers, but she does get kinda boring at times. In Frontiers, Amy wasn’t focused on chasing Sonic, she was focused on helping the Coco find peace. And she doesn’t insult Sonic every time Sage is around. But the fact that Amy said that she wasn’t a damsel in distress anymore annoys me. GIRL! YOU LITERALLY ARE ONE RN!!! But whatever. But what Amy is missing in Frontiers is her little 12yr girl playfulness. She needed to tease Sonic more in certain areas of the game. She took TOO much of a mom role in that game kinda. But the fact the she showed selflessness was great 😊 SEGA is getting there … Hopefully 🤞

I think it is more about balance. My problems with Amy in Forces are that she's arbitrarily been made the second in command of the resistance. Despite her having no experience in leading a marching band, let alone a plucky gorilla faction of freedom fighters. I know you might bring up her leading Team Rose. But her leading a small group of friends is vastly different than leading an army. And given how small a role the resistance plays in the story, you could have any character in this role and it would make just about as much sense. Her problem in Sonic Frontiers is that her big character moment is treated like a revelation. She wants to 'share this love with the world'. She already (theoretically) shared this kind of love with the world when she was the commander of the resistance. Therefore, this moment is completely devaluing the good she did before this in both Forces and the comics. This also qualifies as character writing in the same way a picture of food on cardboard is food. You could eat it, but it would be dry and tasteless. My point is that this really feels like Amy is talking to the audience, not Sonic. This isn't helped by one of Dr Eggman's Egg Memos where he comments on how far she's come as a character. Why does he care? And, again, it feels like he's talking to the audience. What Amy does besides this and saving Sonic, is be a hollow emoting tool for the plot. She comments on the ruins and oddities on the island, when we already have these questions on our minds. "Ooo, these ruins are mysterious. Ooo, what happened to the Coco?" And all I can say to this is "I GET IT! I GET IT! I GET IT!" 2003-2010 Amy's problem was that she got repetitive and irrelevant. They only ever used her for comic relief. You could write her out of Sonic Heroes, Shadow the hedgehog, Sonic Riders, Sonic Rush, Sonic 06, and Sonic Unleashed and little would change about the story. Even then, I could say that about Forces and Frontiers. You could have it be just Tails captured on the Star Fall Islands and it wouldn't change much. Though there were sprinklings of growth here and there. Like in Sonic 06, where she apologizes to Silver for inconveniencing him, showing that she has some level of self-awareness. Or later, when she decides to deal with Silver long enough for Sonic to escape. And Sonic trusts her enough to leave it to her. I know people will bring up the line "Even if that was true, if I had to choose between the world and Sonic, I would choose Sonic!" to paint her as an insane maniac. But what if I told you that she was deliberately exaggerating her love for Sonic, just to make it clear to Silver that she absolutely will not listen to him? From her perspective, he's tricked her into getting him into a position where he could kill her boyfriend and now he's claiming that her boyfriend will destroy the world in the future with no real proof. Would Amy be the type to lie if it meant protecting Sonic? I would think so. And she's willing to criticize him if she thinks he's wronged her. Like in Sonic Riders, where she's angry at him for almost hitting her when attacking Eggman. Now you could wonder why she wouldn't believe that Silver is from the future, but I can explain by way of a tangent. It would be like trying to explain Werewolves to a Vampire hunter who doesn't know Werewolves exist. With no proof, he would just think you were crazy. Sure, Amy from 2003-2010 could be grating. But at least she left an impression and her motivation was clear. I can't take your options of annoying and boring seriously, because they are both highly subjective. I certainly didn't find her that annoying. The worst I think it got was in Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle, Sonic Rush, and Sonic X Season 3. And half those examples are because of game mechanics hamstringing the story. The only reason Amy is attacking Sonic in Heroes and Battle, is because they inserted a rival battle into the story mode structure and the story was so simple (or they were just lazy) that there were no other options to fit it into the story besides 'And then Amy went crazy and attacked Sonic'. This is similar to a problem that the modern Mortal Kombat games faced, where they need to to get 4 four fights into a character chapter even if the motivation makes no sense. Like in MK9 where, Johnny Cage thought that the best way to endear himself to Sonya Blade, was to beat her up in a karate match. Or later when Jax thought that the best way to get back at Johnny for being a stud, was to punch his face in. Or in MKX where Kotal Khan learns that Shinnok has poisoned Earth's lifeforce. And instead of teaming up with our heroes to have the best chance of stopping Shinnok, he decides that he will kill them, then offer their heads to Shinnok to distract him long enough to bolster Outworld's defenses.

I don't see why she can't have elements of both.

Depends on who you ask. Her audience has a wide and varied range, extending anywhere from Adventure era writing purists to young girls that cast their own or ideal personality onto Amy. There's so much that whenever a change happens, you're bound to hear about it. Personally, I'm fine as long as there aren't weird drastic changes, like her suddenly being the leader of a military. That came out of nowhere...

I just don’t want her to lose her identity. I want Sonic Adventure Amy but more mature and want her to stay unapologetically Girly and feminine, who still falls in love with Sonic and supports him in any way she can, and STILL grow as a strong independent woman. I also feel that if you take away her short fuse, you lose a piece of Amy that makes up her fiery personality. She can be a girly girl AND be short tempered, otherwise you’re saying women can’t get angry or it’s wrong for them to be angry. I don’t like her obsession and mean spirit that previous games had her be, but a short fuse was a flaw that balanced her out and I feel that mellowing her out makes her even more boring than she was before. She’s passionate! A great ball of energy and fire, that goes with Sonic’s Cool and collected attitude. I’m afraid that her fire will be snuffed out by Sega in order to appease ‘Fans’ and turn her into Sally.

As far as I see it, why would fans want Amy to have a crush and one dimensional trait, but they don't want Amy and Sonic to actually have something together? As far as I see it, if it's not going to build to anything bigger than a crush, then there's no need for her to crush on anyone. Crushes fade. Even with Amy being an independent character who actually adds to the story, there's no need for a crush if that's all it's ever going to be. It's been how long probably over 28 years of Amy having a crush on someone and that's all it's ever been? I want Amy to have more to her character than a useless attribute that won't grow or lead to anything. I'd rather her fall for someone else and they actually have something, than her continue to just run around being useless. Amy, Tails, Sonic, Knuckles, and all the characters are older now. It's about time they had some character development, dog on it. And Frontiers brought that for ALL OF THEM. Tails is going to actually learn how to fight, Knuckles is going to stop hanging on just Angel Island and actually explore, Amy is going abroad to spread love and crap and not just stalk after Sonic all the time, Sonic is finally serious and momentarily jokes. Frontiers wiped the slate clean and gave all the characters a new beginning (no extremists allowed). My mom always told my sister that if a man likes a woman, he'll go try to earn her trust, not the other way around. If Sonic likes Amy, leave it up to Sega to make him actually go to her. Other than that, Amy needs a new outlet. She needs a useful purpose. Her and Sonic are still friends and that won't change.

I've also never been a fan of the criticism of "You can just replace her with X" in Adventure 2 (or general for any non-action character) because it completely defeats the point of why she was doing it. You also have to consider other factors too, does it fit for their character? Does the character have the same perspective or would provide the same wavelength of understanding? With Amy, I think boiling her down to "she's useless because she isn't active" just amounts to the rather sexist criticism of "A character is bad because they aren't in on the action or doing anything". The entire point was that Amy was in over her head, she arrived on the island in her determination to save Sonic because she wanted to put her independence to the test. But her feats prior to this point still don't measure to anything the boys (or even newcomers Shadow and Rouge) can do, considering Adventure 1 portrayed ZERO as something that was a major threat for HER to handle, when in the grand scheme of things, he would be just a mook or mini boss for the others. Amy's character in the Adventure games was all about how you don't need to be strong to be a hero, you just need your own strength. Yes, does Amy get reduced actively? of course, but the point was to show how by comparison she's out of her element. What started out as her mission to save Sonic in her own determined way, turned into a bigger mission that she couldn't handle. By this point she wasn't fighting in space or tackling Eggman 1v1, she was coming into her own but wanted to be in the loop with the boys. She spends almost all her screentime barring her introductory cutscene and the prison scene commenting how excluded she feels. She wants to be included, but nobody is allowing her to be. So, in other words she isn't being taken seriously, she just puts on a look to seem more capable to be included. When she appears to Shadow alone, she uses the one thing SHE knows how to do, and that is connect with someone in an emotionally intelligent way, she used her compassion to help Shadow reach his conclusion. Which is something the other characters wouldn't do on the same level. When it comes to Sonic Heroes, this is the most overcriticzed version of Amy. And is the one where people are really taking the context of her WAY to seriously. It was established from the beginning cutscene Amy has her own life, she's chilling on a beachside with Cream and Big wondering the whereabouts of their missing friends, she is even having friendly conversations with them. Amy fantasizes about Sonic, but that's a normal thing to do when you haven't seen someone in a while, the paper just happens to remind her of Sonic because he was on the paper. The newpaper saw Sonic with their missing friends, by this logic Team Rose have a motive to all be going after Sonic. With Amy, sure there is a bonus in that she gets to find him personally, but that also means even in spite of that she has a motive to find Sonic that ties with her. I also find that scene vs Team Sonic to be taken WAY to literally, the implication has NOTHING to do with abuse its just something people inject into the scene, which is actually translated differently in Jap version. It's just an excuse to start the boss fight. I also don't see what's so wrong with that because it isn't like she just ditches her friends upon encountering Team Sonic the first time, during the boss fight AMY is the one who asks Team Sonic about their missing friends, with Team Sonic honestly being flippant and dismissive of it. There is nothing wrong with Amy's advances being treated as a flaw in their pursuit because it isn't coming to anybody's detriment. In fact, after they fight Team Sonic, the goal becomes to find Eggman and Amy is the one who encourages her team to keep going. She only leaves after her friends had their happy ending and Cream points out Sonic TO her.

Amy sadly is one of those examples of controversial female characters that comes from the lens of systemic views. Which has run rampant on social media. Amy (and by extension female characters) are basically stuck in an unwinnable state, it doesn't matter what they make Amy she is always going to be divisive, unless she fits a specific mold that THEY want her to be, Amy's current state is one of my biggest pet peeves with modern female characters. The sanitized female character who becomes a too perfect girlboss because people react to the extreme. I very much prefer a middle ground for the character, I feel like Murder of Sonic did her character so well that it baffles me it isn't the direction they took with her. I've always liked Amy and felt her hate was WAY too overexaggerated and people just looking too much into things based on either systemic views or emotional response. Amy in the modern day has basically become the generic female voice of reason trope, which is the most stale, overdone version of a female character in media. It was basically the ONLY trait female characters had in 70s, 80s and 90s media (especially in regard to early Superhero or video game genre when they weren't filling the damsel in distress role. It was also what defined the girl of the group in sitcoms, where the girl out of a group of wacky guys only served to be a boring sterilized female character whose main train other than being a girl is being kind, when she isn't just being another girlboss.) yet these were kinds of female characters critics complained about, but somehow its seen as acceptable for Amy due to specific views on her older character. See how female characters are always in a double standard? (yet these same people always rant about gender specifics with DS in their rants that most of the time come off as vent sessions about systemic issues that often times isn't what the dynamic is displaying at all) But how is this any less "one dimensional" than her old persona like people say it is, it's literally having less bones in character than previously because she's just a generic female but lacks any flaws, dynamics or rough edges. The ONLY difference is they prefer that version and then say she isn't like that. And it's ironic too, because the detractors who like Amy's modern persona you almost never see them define what her personality actually is, they just compare that she isn't like she was before, then say she has character. Which is NOT making the case for a more dynamic character, you're just complaining who she was before. And when reasons are given, they don't amount to anything more complex than her previous person, they just took away her liking Sonic. Because these are the same people who would criticize female characters like Amy's modern portrayal, but because she fits the character they want her to be like, especially when you consider for years that she was hated nobody ever offered any discussion on how to improve her character, they just complained about her existence, while exaggerating everything she did, with no substance how to improve her. Now because she fits how THEY want her to be she's good, when if you were to have a female character like Modern Amy, she'd be criticized for being a generic female voice of reason/girlboss. I also don't consider her new character "development" when there wasn't any reason development that happened, they just changed her character's motive from before. I also defend the notion that Amy wasn't a stalker in most of her appearances in the 90s or 2000s, it's literally just the worst-case scenario label they throw out just because of how extreme she could be, but honestly if you analyze her in the games. Sonic is a guy who is known to always be on a run, he never likes to be in one place and always goes whenever, Amy was always portrayed as someone with her own life who just happened to be fantasizing about Sonic in moments, we see her because it was always implied it had been sometime since their last excursion. With Sonic always being on the run, it would make sense that the only way Amy could make her move would be to chase him down, it's just that her extreme advances were something Sonic either had no time for or were too aggressive. And her chasing Sonic down did have positive effects on her character. When it comes to Boom, one thing fans keep doing I wish they wouldn't is they treat Boom Amy as if she's comparable or canon to Amy (while treating her as if she's perfect) when she was literally written to be a different version of her from a different universe, yet people act as if they should be compared. Not only that, I think people really use surface level lens to judge the element of "immaturity" all they did was change how she expresses her feelings to Sonic. Which TBH, they made it more stereotypical because its just the "I have a secret crush, but don't want them to know and I hide it" trope, and there were references in Boom that showed Amy could have a creepy crush on Sonic, she was just in the dark about doing so, which NO doesn't make it any better. Not to mention, Boom Amy displayed basically the same flaws her older persona did prior, yet fans don't ever seem to bring this up. Despite the fact she was short tempered, mean to her friends, bossy, yet gets a free pass because THEY like that version of her. (I'm not saying it's bad for Boom Amy to have these, but it's so hypocritical how she got a free pass for things they criticized her old persona of having. When the only difference is that she likes Sonic secretly. And if she does still like Sonic, the games don't do a good job showing it, but if you want to use the excuse "she moved on" then that should be something the writing clears up, not an opened ended thing where you're constantly left asking "does like him, does she not like him" It's just bad writing otherwise. Because nowadays, she doesn't have any flaws whatsoever and doesn't play off of Sonic in any interesting way. There isn't a dynamic with them anymore and her new role just amounts to "Sonic's friend who is a girl" whereas given Amy's previous wild card persona you can just fit her into the story to do whatever. Hell in Sonic Dream Team her personality is literally just "female Sonic" yet her classic design is criticized for being Sonic but girl. LOL Hypocritical much?

If you think Amy is defined by her love for Sonic, you’re right, but it’s actually a good thing. It does not rob her of her independence, make her “weaker”, or “one note”. Amy loves the world and adventure which Sonic is literally the living personification of. The only reason she appears in any game is because she loves adventure aka she loves Sonic. She has a heart of gold just like Sonic with the spunk of an outgoing teenage girl. Let us not be wrapped up in modern girlboss writing conventions and accept characters like Amy are important and not regressive. The only thing that was problematic was our interpretation of her, now we’re paying the price for it

Botch a concept with poor implementation, then swing hard in the other direction without really understanding what went wrong, and creating more problems in the process.
