    Why are these yards so commonly using these trailer mounted loaders vs an excavator? Cheaper? Not really needed to be moved around often so it doesn’t need to be drivable?

    • @grindersandheavyiron1741
      @grindersandheavyiron1741 4 місяці тому

      Great question. I wondered the same thing before working here. Excavators are the work horse of these operations but their big downfall is the logs have to 1) be parallel with the thumb/bucket to pick it up and 2)the excavator has to be perfectly situated to then load those logs on the infeed chain. Knucklebooms are awesome because you can spin the grapple 360 so no matter where the log is, you can grab it. It’s also handy to inspect a log quickly by spinning it for metal.

    Is the green coloured machine on the left of the screen, grinding the output of the white machine, into even smaller pieces?

    • @grindersandheavyiron1741
      @grindersandheavyiron1741 5 місяців тому

      No sir, that machine is called a stacker. The purpose is to stockpile the material in a cost effective way. If you didn't use one, it'd take maybe an hour or so before the material backs up to the main conveyor and you'd have to shut down. With that stacker, you may be able to stockpile 800 yards in one spot without moving your grinder. It's a lot cheaper to run one of those than to have a guy on a loader or excavator moving the material away as well. Some clever operations add a cross belt magnet to the stacker. There's no way to avoid hitting metal during the first grind but for the metal that gets through, the cross belt magnet will also pull the metal out so on the next pass, you're not hitting the same metal again.

    • @grindersandheavyiron1741

      Like most people around this type of equipment, I've had some close calls. The main thing running grinders and what not is the material or parts getting thrown. The mills run so fast and violent when something goes wrong, it goes really wrong. In one of the videos where I'm standing on a pile a decent ways away, a chunk of wood gets ejected and almost hits me. I have to duck which you can see in the video. As far as miserable days at work stories, I had a grinder that was tracked and blew a hydraulic line going to the final drive in the middle of winter. It was in such a bad spot when it blew that professional mechanics came and turned down the work. I had to chisel frozen mud for three days just to get under the machine where I could change the line myself. I worked by myself at this time. This industry builds character to say the least.

It'll be lessons learned and advice about the industry having started, and then losing, my business 5 years later. I learned a ton the hard way but unfortunately, it was too little too late. My goal is to help encourage people to take the leap if they're considering becoming an business owner, but to also prevent anyone from repeating the same mistakes I made. If you have any questions in the meantime, please let me know. I always love to talk shop about the mulch world.

    You should make a video detailing the differences between the different types of chippers and grinders etc. but go into a lot of detail. If you notice there is no video on UA-cam that does this for the big machines. I bet it would get a lot of views.

    • @grindersandheavyiron1741
      @grindersandheavyiron1741 5 місяців тому

      I think that's a wonderful idea and thank you! I haven't put any videos out in quite a while and I need to start again. I had my own mulch business and then I worked at a biomass yard so it used to be easier to make videos, but now I'm in a different industry so it's harder to make my own content. I am currently in the works of making a video that I'll post soon specifically about the business side of running a mulch business. I'll do your idea after that. Keep the ideas coming, they're appreciated.

      Yeah I feed one everyday that is wore out and you can only run certain material through it without it clogging up then you have to crawl inside and clean it out. Personally I don’t think it’s one of the best designs but I guess it gets the job done.

    • @grindersandheavyiron1741
      @grindersandheavyiron1741 6 місяців тому

      I think shredders have unbelievable potential, especially ones like the Doppstadt Inventhor 9, but they need to find a way to force bigger material to get chewed up. All of them, and especially 2 shafts, just have the wood bounce around. They're great at brush but mulch yards get tons of chunkwood and they're just too slow in my opinion

    I drove one of these all over central Viet Nam a long time ago. They are a beast! On one TDY I pulled a 25 foot (?) trailer hauling dry cement pallets from LSTs on the beach about ten miles to an Air Force base. Had 6 on the truck and 12 on the trailer and grossed just over 100,000 lbs. Still pulled strong, just had to split shift. We did that for about a month. After I left they made some of them into gun trucks with heavy weapons. Look up Gun Trucks of Viet Nam for more info on those trucks. Life savers in an ambush.
