Great album for certain.....Mirror to My Woman's Mind, Subway, The Scarlet Thing in You, and Sails Wave Goodbye are excellent songs.
Killer album from the Queen of Goth and her band. I like Hybrid, Lunar Camel, Christine, Clockface and especially Paradise Place.
I gave Delerium's latest album Signs from 2023 a listen and it is actually alright. Some of their later albums have been weak and I lost interest for a while. However, this one is an interesting listen. 76/100. Looking forward to your review of Karma. I am pretty sure you will like it.
Cool. I'm sure I will. I will include it in the next set of reviews. Cheers!
Bozzio was in zappa in the 70s he is incredible!
Good call. I forgot to add that. He was quite accomplished for getting into a new wave band. talented!
Karma is the best Delerium album in my opinion. It sounds like a mix of Brian Eno and Dead Can Dance and will blow your ambient mind. The song Window to Your Soul is very Eno-esque. Semantic Spaces is a great album too. I will check out Synesthesia.
Spheres is the one I have
@ Lotsa long drawn out pieces on that one
Peter Murphy's albums Deep and Cascade are killer. Great tracks: Cuts You Up, Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem, Subway, The Scarlet Thing in You and Sails Wave Goodbye
Tim, have you ever heard Bill Leeb's other ambient project Delerium?
Hey. I have a little bit of it. I do very much like the Synesthesia side project. Not as much material as Delirum but check it out if u dont know it. Which Deleirum album should I review sometime? I think I have one and a few tracks on comps...
@@rediscoveryrecords1348 Karma is likely the best album by Delerium. It is incredible and sounds like a mix of Dean Can Dance and Brian Eno. You will like it. Semantic Spaces is really good too. I will check out Synesthesia.
@@rediscoveryrecords1348 Karma is the best Delerium album IMO. It's like a mix of Dead Can Dance and Brian Eno and will blow you away. The song Window to Your Soul is very Eno-esque. Semantic Spaces is a great album as well.
@@rediscoveryrecords1348 I listened to Delerium's latest album Signs from 2023 and it alright actually. Not as mesmerizing as Karma but a good listen still.
This was the first SM album I got to anticipate, got the release date, reserved my copy and couldn't wait to get out of school that day. I'm admittedly biased but I flipped over the album. Now, I reluctantly have to admit it went off the rails a little. I really enjoy the SITR demos and think those versions would have been interesting. The decision to REALLY avoid making NGD2 may have been a bit detrimental here.
Cool story. That must have been exciting. I have memories like that also of releases. Interesting point on NGD2.
Sparkle sounded like Simple Minds were trying to break into the U2 stadium rock sound(The Kick Inside of Me which is still a great song IMO.) Sparkle has a lot of good stuff on it nevertheless(Catwalk, Book of Brilliant Things, Speed Your Love) but it was the beginning of the end of classic, cool Simple Minds for me.
Arne Weinberg is an underrated techno producer, love his take on Detroit Techno. My favorite track of his is Synthetic Dissection off his Alpha & Omega album. Hope Arne comes back to making music again.
Agreed. If he does, I will ask him to be on my label for sure.
Ya. My label too! Lol
I like the Gentlemen Take Polaroids album best when they had their new romantic /Roxy Music-influenced sound. Top Tracks: Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Ain't That Peculiar, Nightporter., Methods of Dance, My New Career
I would throw Arr of Parries in there. Serious funk in there. Cant go wrong with Quiet Lfe, Life in Tokyo, Ghosts and Canton. I agree, I like their 1980-82 period better personally. I think I reviewed Tin Drum before. I think I gave it aroumd a 70/100
I tried listening to this album in the past but lost interest. Love Shadow is a killer tune I heard back in the 80s. The bass is unreal. I am going to give Fabrique another listen. Fashion is such a cool band name.
Sparkle in the rain is the last of the brilliant minds albums first 6 were fantastic
100% agree. After that it was John Hughes movie themes, stadium rock, and Jim Kerr with a mullet and cowboy boots.
When i was younger i was afraid listening this album in dark room at night, being alone at home.
Nice
Definitely a killer album (as us old guys still refer to them). This is just my opinion but I think Simple Minds were in their uber cool minimalist hypnotic synth phase when they made Sons and Fascination. Like you said, there is a Kraftwerk feel as well as the influence of early Krautrock electronica band Neu! Sons is very cool, sparse and hypnotic even with Mick MacNeil’s amazing keys and synth sounds. Theme For Great Cities is a phenomenal instrumental piece that really reflects this. The Minds then seemed to take an upswing after on New Gold Dream which is more lush, textured and produced but still true to form and topnotch. And the follow-up Sparkle in the Rain was even more up with the band taking a run at U2 and stadium rock. Sparkle is still a great album but you can hear traces of Simple Minds trying to sound like U2 on songs like the Kick Inside of Me. I think comparing Sons to Sparkle is like comparing apples to oranges, yet both are excellent in their own way.
Agreed. Kick Inside Of Me is probably the sole reason or difference that Sons is slightly better than Sparkle for me. Its a song difference away. And that is the worst song on Sparkle for me
Derek Forbes...amazing bass player
Sister Europe
lol. Thanks! It was on the tip of my tongue
My favourite Kraftwerk album, especially for stunning synth timbres on the closing two tracks on Side 2 ('Home Computer' and 'It's More Fun To Compute'). I think even today those two tracks remain the absolute sonic apex of analogue synthesis.
Synthesis. exactly. Agreed. I was trying to say it wasn't fully intentional that they meant to but they happened to do it.
This was for me the last of their album I bought. Then things changed drastically. A very fine record
Agree absolutely this was the precursor to Avalon. Roxy would have had a way different path and sound if Eno had stayed. I like the originals on Flesh and Blood way more than the covers. Same Old Scene is an epic club anthem. Never fails to blow me away. Also really like Flesh and Blood, My Only Love and Running Wild. My Only Love rips your heart out. Classic Ferry crooning at its best. Over You and Oh Yeah are good too. Overall a great album.
Nice. Thank you for the comment. I think that if this album didnt have Midnight Hour in it and another really good track, that it would have made the 80s I thinik. Avalon will probably be in the 85-90 range for me.
@@ElectricCafe-45 yeah not a single weak song on Avalon. Near perfection.
@@ElectricCafe-45 Tim, here is a link to a cool electronic band called Cathedral of Tears from Southern California in the 80s. The singer is Jack Grisham, the crazy punk frontman for TSOL(True Sounds of Liberty). He had a period where he went electro-goth and formed Cathedral of Tears. It's a bit obscure, not on Spotify. Give it a listen if you are bored. I am curious to hear your opinion on it. ua-cam.com/video/B0pJYpqt2_Q/v-deo.html

Cool. Stand and Deliver or Ant Music for me :)
man i need to get better in front of a camera.. lol. i completely blanked on a lot of these questions. my “prized” possession is a Sansui AU-555, my cassette deck is a Beocord 1900. You opened up and got better through the video. You did well for your first time. Good job :) Lol at rappers. Well, you dont much like hip-hop anyways. I cant believe I forgot Geto Boys!
L7 should have been way bigger. A killer mix of punk, grunge and metal. They were the female Sex Pistols. There is a great doco on them called Pretend We're Dead on UA-cam.
Nice, I will check it out! Yes, I agree. They should have been bigger too. Its not my favorite style of music so maybe if it was I would have given it a more accurate score like it may deserve. But I think its a good album for sure. Its a little outside the box of what I normally want to review but I decided to try it. I like a lot of different music. But there is so I dont think I'm quite experienced enough with that sound to give it an accurate score. I felt that doing the L7 but still gave it a shot. I started doing a Dire Straits records I have. Their debut. And then just stopped and told myself I'm not sure how to rate it. I like them but i don't think its what I want to review on the channel anyways.
@@ElectricCafe-45 I hear you Tim. Electronic music is your wheelhouse. I like punk, metal, blues and grunge as well (no hip hop or country!) Your L7 review was great. BTW that Dire Straits debut is excellent. Riding in the back of my parent's car as a kid listening to that 8 track is a great memory.
Thanks man. Appreciate the nice words.
Sons and Fascination is a killer album. This is the best period of the Minds when they were a super cool electro/synth band. Love Song, Theme for Great Cities, The American, Sweat in Bullet, 20th Century Promised Land, In Trance as Mission are all incredible. I give this album a low to mid 80. New Gold Dream was an even better follow up album to the sound on Sons. When Jim Kerr grew a mullet, started wearing cowboy boots on stage and they became a stadium rock band, I was done......Looking forward to Roxy Music, Fashion and Porno for Pyros as well.
Thanks man! I agree. I like their 1980 (adding I Travel and The Fear of Gods)-1983 stuff the best. I do have a soft spot for tracks here and there outside that period but they could do no wrong then!
@@ElectricCafe-45 Agree. I Travel is a killer song. Looking forward to your review of New Gold Dream, a possible 90 for me
Such dreamy music 👌
Listened to your review with interest as a die hard Spandau fan for over 40 years. Have to agree with you that this album did signal the end of their peak in the 80s. It was impossible to replicate the commercial success of True. Their follow up album Parade was a good album but Barricades highlighted that the 80s was coming to an end and they were running out of steam. They went from the blue eyed soul sound of True to as you comment, a more rockier sound and image. By the time they got to 1988 recording their last studio album, Heart Like A Sky, it was done reluctantly and the band’s heart wasn’t really in it.
Thank you for the post. 100% agree. Appreciate it!
That background is so legit! ❤
Do we know each other? lol! Thanks!
I agree with much of what you were saying about the album and thanks for doing the review. Just wanted to say you shouldn’t sip your drink like that on air in the middle of a conversation.
Thanks. You brought up a good point. My friend says I stroke my beard too much too. I guess I do these things while in deep thought and don't think about how it might look or sound. Part of doing these videos is to help me get better at presenting and getting across my thoughts. So thanks for helping me address them. Thanks for watching!
if I had to pick three of my favorite songs for this one I would have to pick five. I’ll try to list them in order i can manage to decide. I would have to put Five-O and P.S. in the number 4 spot simultaneously 3. Dream Thrum 2. Lullaby 1. Out to Get You I love this album mainly because of the way it makes me feel. It’s an unexplainable feeling that very few albums could even attempt to make me feel. I think a lot it has to do with the lyrics and intriguing rhythms. I think this album has a great deal of depth that you don’t find often, at least to the extent that James went to on this one. I would agree that the album could be a little tighter, and i would agree that the song Laid does feel a little out of place on this album. With that being said, I do love this album front to back. One of my all time favorites. If i absolutely had to choose which songs to take away, if i felt that they held the album back from its highest potential would be Everybody Knows, Knuckle Too Far, and Low Low Low. Overall Fantastic album, I don’t really have any criticism about it. This album really does make you think. I believe I was about seventeen when I discovered this album, I’m now twenty four. I’ve probably listened to it about fifty times and i still find new things to love about it.
edit: “…that very few albums could even attempt to try and make me feel.”
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. I was also 17 when this album came out. Thankfully MTV was still pretty good in 1993 to help me find this album because I saw the videos for !Laid and Saw Something. What's your score out of 100?
This was HUGE at the time! 👌
This album got constantly played in my house when it was released. And the same happened with their second album 'Blind': if possible, this was even better. By the time they made their third and final album, part of the magic had vanished IMHO. They were a wonderful band❤
Ya I thought it was a good album. I only knew 2 tracks going into it. My sister had it when it came out.
Such a lovely album. Still listen to it now and then
Agreed! Nice to see someone who knows them. Very unjoyable album
Their drums are brilliant I agree. Not crazy for the new album though. PS you mentioned most of my favourite songs...
The album is definitely one note one mood. I have a feeling the next 2 that are planned might round out the 3 in total in retrospect. My score has probably a bit of new excitement syndrome that will wear off. Which is why I am mostly doing albums from the first 25 years of my life 1976-2001 ;) Its a lot easier to rate albums that are older. Thanks for commenting!
Great album. Every song is excellent. I would bump this score into low 80s.
Ya, I was really close. Really close

@@rediscoveryrecords1348 Yeah just my opinion but a fine album no matter what

I believe you said you had done some DJing in the past. I have this DJ fantasy where I am working in a super cool nightclub with happening, good-looking, well-dressed clubgoers, lots of hot model-type women, and I play Both Ends Burning at about midnight and then end the night climactically(late) with Same Old Scene. Whaddya think???
Awesome! Yes, I have been DJing in one form or another since 1988. That sounds awesome. Are you aware of Rusty Egan? He was a member of Visage and was the primary DJ for the Nu-romantic nights they had in like 1979. Midge Ure, Marc Almond, members from Human League, Mick Karns, Gary Numan etc had been there and others I believe. I cant remember the name of the club. Anyways, that would be like a dream come true to have been there and hear the hip new wave. Roxy would totally fit in. Ultra mod club nights. I like that. I always try to fit in some smooth Ferry music in my sets. I need to do my 2nd review for a Roxy Music and solo Ferry albums next go around. Any thoughts on which of those I should do? You choose.
@ Flesh and Blood or Avalon would be great reviews. Avalon might break 90!!! I like late period Roxy best like you do. I need to get into the early albums more as the hits from them are cool but it is more out there stuff than Avalon or Flesh and Blood. The big three Bryan Ferry albums I like are Boys and Girls, Bete Noire and Mamouna…… I think the club where Rusty Egan DJed is the Blitz. There is a good movie about this cool early scene and Boy George called Worried About the Boy (on UA-cam). It would be killer to be time warped back to that scene for certain.
The Blitz, good one. Ok, I will do Flesh and Blood next time I do a Roxy album. Thanks for the suggestion! Mamouna is soooo good. Love that album. Boys and Girls is great too. Stone Woman is my jam. I will check out that movie. That might have been the one I saw clips of. Boy George going rings a bellnow.
Whole album is like a horror movie soundtrack.
Indeed. I dont think Cevin gets enough his sampling prowess and fusing industrial with horror. thanks for posting!
Check the thoughts at 7:00-11:00 of this video if u havent. Talk about the horror movie sampling and reaction videos on them that are on youtube.
This album is absolute masterpiece - 99/100!
I know, I know. I'm being picky lol. I just think there is really only 7 or 8 songs. So its hard for me to give in the 80s at least. Close though. very close. See my ratings in the notes for my scale if you like. :(
For me it's 88/100 at least!
I thought it would be in the 80s for sure. assimilate, deadlines and the choke! But a lot of average short songs. Love, Christianity and a few others. Blood on the wall isnt that great either. I wonder if Too dark park or vivisecvi will make it into the 90s. hmmm. Those are my 2 favs I think. Puppy forever!
Sorry, I meant Boris Williams was the previous drummer. :)
Interesting. I bought this on vinyl back in 1990 on the strength of "Victorialand" (and "Treasure" and "The Pink Opaque") Initially, I found it very electronic, and far more rigid in structure than their previous releases. Not in a bad way, but it was clear they were changing their process. Honestly, it's been so long I couldn't explain more then my broadest impressions, but I'd have to agree with your assessment. For people who liked this album, I would recommend "Victoraland" and "Treasure" if you like the pure languid sound they make and maybe "Garlands" (if you like your music with a little more bite.)
Fully agree. It sounds like their turning point to their more polished sound. perhaps its just a sign of the time with recording studio techniques / equipment, studio budget etc. Thanks for posting your thoughts.
sons and fascination sister feelings call is my personal favorite. However you can find something good off their records. Even Neapolis has a couple of good songs on it. However, there is no question and I think any Simple Minds fan will tell you the best lineup they ever had was Kerr, Burchill, Forbes, Gaynor, and the Mighty Mick McNeil, arguably one of the greatest of all time.
Oh, I forgot your Front 242 shirt is awesome. What you hear is what you get.
Awesome. Thanks!
I'm looking forward to reviewing Sons and Fascination. Maybe I should do that next. I haven't heard any of their albums from 1996-2016 to be honest. Everything before that I really really like. And like you said, you can always like something on their albums. Thanks for posting!
You are right about this album being best in small doses, it's pretty bland in all honesty...and let's be real had she been some craggy hatchet face I doubt anyone would even have even noticed this group...
It was definitely a hard album to really rate in some ways...but then it wasn't.
Still my fav Aphex Twin album.
So good!
When will we get more re:discovery records 🙌🏻
Hey thanks for asking. Working on what to release actually. New artwork also is in the ix as well. Hope to have at least 4-5 releases for 2025. Hope you like whats been out so far. If you don't know my sublabel, check out discoveryrecords1.bandcamp.com/ . I did put out a new release there 2 months ago. Its free. Discovery is a digital only label with new or unreleased music from friends versus re:discovery is vinyl and reissues or unreleased. Cheers
Love Chameleons Script of the Bridge
Havent heard that one but I will check that one and do it sometimes. Thanks!
@@rediscoveryrecords1348 The opening song Don't Fall will blow you away
Please go back to the great bands you have been doing we love those reviews
Roger that!
New Zealand's an odd country? 😂
lol. my fault. I mean odd as in unique or different :)
@ElectricCafe-45 Us Kiwis would say, "All goods, Bro!" You made me check out more of The Motels 👍
Thanks! Love me some Motels. my hometown band
@@ElectricCafe-45 Go 49ers!!! (I have no idea what I'm saying)
haha! That was my favorite team when I used to watch football. Hockey is my favorite sport. You?
Love is by far the Cult's best album. It was the peak of their cool postpunk sound. Standout tracks are Revolution, Hollow Man, Little Face, Love and the Phoenix. (She Sells is no doubt a great song but it has been flogged to death.). I wish they would have kept this sound instead of trying to be ACDC/Zeppelin knockoffs. There are subtle hints at hard rock on Love with songs like the Phoenix and the title track. And there are some good songs on Electric and Sonic Temple but their conversion from postpunk to pseudo heavy metal was too corny for me and I was done with the Cult.
Pretty much agreed. I tend to like underdogs tracks on most albums. As I go through albums and try to rate them. Many of them ones I have known for 30-40 years, some are hard to rate. I am about to review Sisters of Mercy Floodland. Hard not to give This Corrosion a 5/5 as its an all time classic. But if I never heard it again, I wouldn't really care. There are some tracks and albums like that, that are bookmarks for the genre. She Sells Sanctuary, Rain, Fire Woman and Love Removal Machine are those type tracks. But I'm a bigger fan of Wild Flower, New York City, Brother Wolf, Lil Devil and those type more. Thanks for your comment!
@@ElectricCafe-45 Yeah it sucks that overplaying a cool song basically kills it for most discerning listeners. There are a lot of good tunes I never need to hear again. You Shook Me All Night Long is such a song. As good as Hungry Like the Wolf is, I can't be bothered to listen to it anymore. This might be a cool show topic. If you want a guest co-host, I am down.
Agree with you. I think thats why I feel like I need to give some of those classic some extra love on scoring them. Like West End Girls or Blue Monday. Classics that I dont care to hear often. But they are what they are. Nearly perfect tracks. Thank you for offering on the co-host. There will be some time next year that I do more videos where its a discussion, rant etc. Also I will have some interviews and other things I would like to do. I will keep you in mind. The idea of doing these videos now is for a few reasons. So I get better at presenting. I have always been kind of quiet - always listening to music versus talking about it. Also, to set a foundation of my music taste with these videos. And also a personal reason of rating them for myself. I do like to critique things and eventually compare them like I did when I was a kid. I once made a top 1,000 songs when I was 14 and did a top 10,000 songs 15 years ago (but didn't finish). I really havent told anyone who might care that I know, I'm doing this channel. Maybe a couple. I kind of just want to get all these album reviews out then go on to the next thing for the channel.
@@ElectricCafe-45 Sounds great Tim. I enjoy your reviews and channel a lot. You are off to a great start. Rants and top ten song lists would be fun. I like making the lists for good bands. Have you heard (or do you have) China Crisis Working with Fire and Steel??? Incredible album IMO. Also, I still really like hearing West End Girls....
Yes! I know China Crisis very , very well. Love most of their 1981-87 work. A lot of really good b-sides as well. I reviewed Flaunt the Perfection a few weeks ago on my channel. Working With Fire And Steel will be the next China Crisis album then since you brought it up. great idea. So many good tracks on there! Nice one
I totally do not agree with you sorry I've been a die hard duranie since February 1981 I was 12 yrs old now I'm 56 still era Simon lebon voice vocals are epic brilliant awesome amazing this is my second favourite album my No1 is Rio they've done 16 albums all epic brilliant awesome amazing av you listen to the shite music 🎵🎶🎵 today omg omg they've been era 47 yrs in the music industry can I say why av you done this review I'm confused 😕😕😕 they are true musicians if you went to see um live ya would be gob smacked you can say what ya want I think your being negative and I'm saying your wrong sorry I hope you don't do any more reviews on this best band ever on planet earth 🌎🌍🌎 take care ok
I understand. I thought I might get some grief from long time Duran fans. I like a lot of their songs. But I feel their albums are overall weak. They lack depth. Please understand that a 58 out 100 is a 'pretty good' album' on my scale. So it's not a bad album. I just can't say its a very good album. Rio might hit the 70s mark and 'Very Good' Hope you can understand.

Check out their epic remix
Thank you! Love Severed Heads even if i dont love all their music.
Nice! Me too. But yes, lot of experimenting and releasing most of it leads to a lot of music but a lot of ok music along with the good stuff.
