The computer Apple has ALWAYS wanted to make.
My breakdown of the M4 Mac mini in 4 minutes.
The new base spec is a killer combo, with a catch. For $599 US, you get the new M4 processor, a new baseline amount of 16GB of unified memory, but alas, only 256GB of internal SSD storage.
Would you pay hundreds, or thousands of dollars for an SSD upgrade on a $599 base-price computer? Or would you rely on external storage for a lot less money per GB?
M4 Mac mini (base model): amzn.to/3Z7fd7g
Thunderbolt 4 enclosure: amzn.to/4ftMZcJ
2TB NVMe SSD: amzn.to/3CxRV1t

Although it looks like a great device, the price for the ASUS ROG Ally X (releasing July 22, 2024) has ballooned to $799 US. In the meantime, the 2023 Ally models are seeing price cuts, and sales on top of those price cuts... ASUS dropped the price of the Z1 Base Model to $499, with sales commonly seeing $399 US almost continuously since Black Friday 2023. The 2023 Z1 Extreme model was cut to $...

Bro, this is exactly what I'm going for. Great video man!
Appreciate the kind words! Thanks for watching 🙏
thx, helped! Would have helped a tiny bitt more, to show which ethernet port in the airport express to take. It's the second from left (LAN), not the first from left (WAN). But thank you very much, great video! :)
Hi friend, I have a question, do you know how to use the Airport Express WiFi with the regular router from the Internet operator (which is not from Apple)… I tried to wire it but it still doesn't extend the WiFi network, only the Ethernet port works.
OMG half of the video is intro. Get to the point.
a simulator being more than the average car is INSANITY, no one in their right mind would buy that
Appreciate this video. I've been looking for a easy way to get all the games I want to stream to my vita in one easy place.
It not can use with 5 g network and than wifi streaming?
I’m currently considering this device (although it’s the newer Ally X with 1TB of storage and 24GB of RAM) to supplement my M1 MacBook Air as my Main Windows machine to replace the older Windows Laptops I’ve been using before, since they are too big and too slow (we have a few I7 laptops which are faster but I want something EVEN smaller and more portable). I love a device like this since it still runs X86, but more powerfully and in such a small package, which means I don’t need to have a second bulky Windows X86 Laptop taking up a significant amount of space right beside my MacBook. And IF I need a larger screen for my Windows Machine, I could always just plug the Thunderbolt Cable (On the newer Ally X), or use an HDMI Dongle on my ROG Ally plug the other end of the cable to the Capture Card on my MacBook, and just use the MacBook as a larger display for my ROG Ally on the go!! I plan to also run old Windows X86 VMs (98, 2000, XP, Vista, 7) on the Ally as well, for running older programs and playing some old childhood retro CD-ROM PC games like Monster Truck Madness and LEGO Island as well. I also bought a folding bluetooth keyboard for the Ally as well, so I can also use it as a backup machine just in case my MacBook has any issues. I think the only disadvantage of the Ally compared to my MacBook is the Mediocre Battery Life, but my MacBook Air will still be my primary machine for work anyway, and the Ally will be for backup.
Nicely done! You’re truly understanding the virtue of combining your tech together through the power of game streaming. Take advantage of the nice MacBook screen that you paid for while steaming the actual game running on a windows system for compatibility. Nothing short of genius.
Great video! I appreciate you getting the point so quickly. Been trying to see if im gonna build a PC for strictly this purpose and your examples helped a ton!
Nice to see somenone who does not need the finest out there. You made it work in your budget by putting some extra effort in..Enjoy for sure eh.
Thanks for watching and commenting- I sure am enjoying it, most nights and weekends to this day. Could I upgrade it? Of course. I’m always wondering about just how much better a direct drive wheel could be, but then I’d have to upgrade to a more rigid seat, new H pattern shifter to match the new wheel ecosystem etc… so in the meantime, I’m enjoying the ease of use of the Logitech.
Since the dot only has one speaker your stereo will not play in stereo either......mono.
This is not true… the 3rd gen echo dot’s 3.5mm output provides a stereo signal. It bypasses the built-in mono speaker when a 3.5mm audio cable is plugged in and provides stereo sound. Of course you need to plug the cable into a stereo sound source too. I hope this helps!
Hi. Any way to hook up the new round Echo to my Marantz NR1607 receiver and not have to unplug the Echo to just use the Echo without the stereo? I’m trying to plug in to one of the audio in ports. Thanks, nice video!
That’s a great question, and unfortunately it’s ultimately one of the pros / cons that lead me to the Apple Home side of things- when the Echo Dot is connected via 3.5mm cable it is a simple and easy solution for connecting nice speakers to streaming services however you cannot use the echo without either turning on the receiver to hear the response or unplugging the echo so it switches back to its internal speaker… but with Apple for example, while the HomePod mini has no 3.5mm jack for easy connection, once it is setup with the Apple Home app I can use the HomePod normally but also ask it to stream music to any of my Hi-Fi setups connected via an AirPort Express puck. So that’s the benefit of the Apple Home side of things here that ultimately led me to switch away from Echo, I have more videos about that on the channel. Sorry I don’t have an easy fix for the Echo ecosystem, but it’s just a result of hardwiring the speaker with that 3.5mm cable, there’s no way to tell it to only take over the audio “sometimes” when it’s just always physically hardwired. I appreciate you watching and commenting, of course if you have any more questions let me know.
Subscribed. This is the info we all need.
Thank you for the kind words 🙏
How did you flip the screen?
sorry. so how do you stream it to your livingroom TV. i dont quite get it. please help out
Great question, do you have a streaming box? Something like Apple TV, or Google TV? If so, just download the Moonlight app on the streaming box. You’ll need to pair a Sunshine host over your local network, like your gaming PC in the same house for example. That’s the gist of it.
@@dylanmacintosh thanks for your reply. i have the newest LG smart TV. will that work? or do i have to get a streaming box? thanks in advance
Great question, the short answer is I would recommend a streaming box. I recommend the Chromecast with Google TV 4K for a budget device, or Apple TV 4K if you’re an Apple household and like that Apple ecosystem. The long answer is the LG webOS technically has a homebrew version of Moonlight that you could install with dev mode enabled on your TV with some effort, but past that I would question the ability of the TV to support Bluetooth controllers correctly for use with game streaming. Whereas for $40 on sale, you can have the Google Chromecast with Google TV 4K that I know works great with Moonlight and Bluetooth controllers correctly because I own one and use it all the time. The streaming boxes I mentioned are also an improvement over the other streaming apps built into the LG webOS, in my opinion- so I definitely recommend a dedicated streaming device like the ones I mentioned from Google or Apple over the built in apps all around. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.
@@dylanmacintosh thank you a lot. i will take your advice. have a nice day
can i use windows and open a game that uses anticheat (we know they wont work on mac parallels etc) and play it as a stream on macbook?
Great question, if you are streaming the game with anticheat from a Windows host to a Mac client, then the game will be running on a Windows gaming PC, so there should be no problem with anticheat, the game should launch normally on the Windows gaming PC host, and sunshine should have no problem streaming your anticheat game over to your Mac Moonlight client. I see no problem, so might as well give it a whirl. Cheers 🥂

Can you give some further instruction on how you have the roms setup with your synology? Noob here, assuming have to have part of the synology listed as network drive and you’ve got launchbox installed on the pc, but pointed to the nas as the source for the rom library? Trying to follow, appreciate any help! Later to address one drive once this figured out if you’re willing. Thanks!
Great question, happy to help. If this comment gets too wordy I might just have to make a quick video on the topic, but here goes. On my Synology NAS I have an application running called Synology Drive. The first step would be to make a folder on your Synology NAS available through the Synology Drive Admin, and then put your ROMs somewhere in that folder. On the Ally I have the Synology Drive Client running, connected to my NAS with an on-demand sync task running for that folder, which includes the ROMs. This way, my Ally sees all the ROM files, and I can add them to LaunchBox, emulators etc, by pointing those apps to the local file path for the Synology Drive \ ROMs folder, whatever that is for you. With Synology Drive, I don’t have to be on the same network as the Synology NAS, since Synology Drive can connect over the internet with its “QuickConnect. To” method. I can sync files from any network connection, like hotels etc. The apps like LaunchBox can add all the ROMs even if they aren’t synced locally, and then when I click on them, Synology Drive will attempt to download them from my NAS automatically. This process ranges from near instant for small ROM files that like NES or GBA, to a few minutes for a larger file like PS2 or GameCube since they can be multiple GBs so internet speed becomes more of a limiting factor, especially if you’re on a guest network like a hotel or airport. I hope this helps, and of course we can tackle OneDrive next. Cheers and thanks for watching!
As someone that used the the original Mac Classic for work and has bought about 15 Macs computers (personally and for my business) since then including the new M4 Pro… I can safely say that whilst Apple upgrades are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced, their computers easily last for 10 years. As much as I hate paying for Apple upgrades they work out IF you keep your machines for the duration.
I agree, still using 2011 mini until now. I ordered m4 mini 24/512, the upgrade price is like a robbery but I’m plan to use it for a long time.😎
Nicely done. ☑️
AirTunes was the predecessor to AirPlay and could handle audio only. That's why the AirPort Express from 2004 had the combined 3.5mm and mini Toslink audio out port.
Is true that the base model comes with refurbished SSD??? 😨😱😱😱😰
Great video. thanks. How would this sound compared to a bluetooth like Esikin?

I was trying to solve almost this exact problem so I could play retro games in the living room with my wife. Steam Rom Manager was the missing piece of the puzzle for my setup since I already had all the emulators setup on my gaming PC and steam link was working great on my Apple TV. Highly recommend this setup to anyone who wants to separate their relaxing gaming time from an office environment where the main PC is usually setup
what was the clear enclosure?
Great question, it's from Orico, I got it on Amazon 2 years back. It's not the fastest NVMe enclosure these days, but it'll do the trick if all you need is a cheap one- amzn.to/4fwOOoZ
i still cant believe how small it is just sittin on my desk
checkout the Moonlight / Tailscale combo for remote streaming even without a Wifi network (rather cell data) and EmuDeck for Windows/Steam Rom Manager (Makes the experience much better than setting up all the emulators and playnite or bigbox imo). Just using steam big picture itself with Emulated games already added to the steam library with controls, setup artwork, etc. EmuDeck for windows makes setting things up so freaking easy. Then I'm using syncthing or onedrive currently to sync save files between devices over the "cloud" until EmuDeck for Windows adds cloud saving soon.
Great idea! I’ve done videos on Steam ROM Manager before, but the combo with Tailscale is interesting, definitely useful for some folks. If you prefer Steam Big Picture, this seems like a great option. For me, I’m much more used to BigBox at this point, and I enjoy the Pause Screen functionality moreso than Steam Link closing the application which seemed to be hit or miss for me. So, it gets down to the nitty gritty, but in general both ways are awesome in their own right, and it might just come down to preference. Thanks for watching and commenting! I’m looking to make a video on ROM and save file syncing too so stay tuned!
Welcome back ❤ Great vid!
Thank you for the kind words. There’s more videos on the way!
nice video definitely will think about this once i have my home set up far in the future lol
Did u happen to notice any latency issue differences with the two?
Great question- short answer is no, not really. Long answer is unfortunately I don’t have any hard numbers or sound science to share. Also, I mostly use my phone for game streaming from my PC via Moonlight, so if there were any latency I wouldn’t be able to tell by eye if it were coming from the controller selection moreso than the wireless game streaming itself. So, controller lag is really not a problem I worry about so that’s a great sign, I suppose.
No need to dream Qatar Airlines started using star link recently! Just a matte of time now :)
That’s awesome. Thanks for the update on Qatar Airlines using Starlink!
Streams just fine but as soon as a game starts the controller stops working. What am I missing?
Moonlight+Sunshine is useful for games that don’t demand too much. However, I’ve noticed it causes a drop of about 40 FPS when I stream Cyberpunk at 4K 120Hz. Without streaming, I get a stable 120 FPS, but once I start streaming, it falls to 80. This doesn’t happen when I stream via Steam Link. I tried messing around with their settings, but I couldn’t achieve better performance. Host: i9 14900K, RTX 4090 OC, 32GB DDR5-6400, 1TB SSD 7000 MB/s R&W Client: MacBook M1 Max 32GB // EDIT: I found that what causes this issue is Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAG), but disabling it makes it impossible to use DLSS3.
Wow, very interesting findings- thank you for posting that update to your comment. I wouldn’t be surprised if this could be fixed in a Sunshine or Moonlight update, or if it’s possibly some kind of limitation with Nvidia’s current architecture- either software or even hardware. But for now I might like to ask you how you prefer to work around it? Do you simply leave DLSS3 disabled? Or do you prefer to lower the resolution and stream at 2K? Disable HDR? Let us know. Another thing that helped me with weird game streaming glitches was to “Reset All Network Settings” on my Windows PC Host, so I’m curious if you have tried that as well. Thanks for watching, and commenting.
@@dylanmacintosh At the moment, I'm not too worried about this. When I was trying to configure them, I was already finishing the Cyberpunk DLC, so right now I'm playing other games that I don't need DLSS3 to achieve the desired frame rate (120). I think lowering the resolution might be a good way to work around this, but I use a TV as a monitor (LG C1) and can easily notice the difference after playing in 4K for too long. 😅 After editing this comment, I kept doing some more tests. What seems to be happening is that only the actual frames are transmitted to the client PC; the gains we get from frame generation is being ignored. Hopefully it will be fixed in the future, Moonlight and Sunshine are amazing. 🙏 It took some time for me to get everything perfect, but now I can say that I achieve the same image quality I was getting when playing on Windows, very hard to notice any compression.

ive tried the RCA jacks that go to MEDIA Player on my Amp (most are HDMI). I dont get any sound. Help
Happy to help. It really depends what kind of amp you have, and which inputs correspond to which settings. If it has HDMI then it sounds like more of a modern amp than what I’ve got. So, look for the input switcher to match the settings that correspond to the label of the ports you’ve connected. I might be able to help further if you could supply the make and model of your amp.

The AirPort Express A1392 smokes the Wiim Pro Plus whose treble and bass are boosted and have hollowed out mids and vocals as a result. It’s shocking how ppl are willing to put up with sound like this. The Apple AirPort Express puts out a very balanced sound with great fidelity. The only con is that the signal to noise ratio is not as good as Wiim Pro Plus but that is a con I will happily live with.
That’s interesting, I haven’t tested the WiiM Pro so I’m not sure what it sounds like. But, that’s another reason why I trust Apple with my audio. They’re a trusted company especially when it comes to audio quality.
