Crib Goch Traverse in Winter
Winter traverse of Crib Goch! Every once in a while you get the chance to have a perfect mountain day...this was one of those days! Crib Goch is an iconic mountain ridge on Snowdon in North Wales. This route is fantastic in any season but at its best when caked in snow and lit with bright sunshine under blue skies.
My aim in this video is to give you a real feel for what the route is like in these conditions and to offer some simple tips on safety and how to approach this route in the Winter. Please remember that these conditions are rare and you should carefully assess weather forecasts, conditions and your level of skill before attempting Grib Goch at any time of the year.
I hope you enjoy the video as much I have done in making it.

A little snow adventure during lockdown

So, as we can only exercise starting from home during lockdown our only chance to get into the snow has been to get up onto the Clwydian hills which rise up above my home village. Even a small adventure is still an adventure.

Winter Night Time Mountain Walking : Should the dark and cold stop us adventuring?

In recent years I have realised that the arrival of cold, dark Winter nights and weather should not necessarily stop us adventuring in the mountains. Life in the UK is so often dictated by the weather and the seasons, but is it possible for us to keep doing the things we love by having the right kit, knowledge and skills? Absolutely! I've been so grateful to have this stunning limestone bouldering wall close to home during the COVID19 lockdown in North Wales. How to Pack for Winter Mountain Camping in the Snow!
I experimented at home with various metal and electronic objects I take backpacking with me to check how they affected bearing on my compass. Wow! It was a worthwhile exercise because I could clearly see how they could throw me way off course!
@@rkatrails brilliant. Any interesting results?
Incredible video, makes me want to get some British alpining in before I go off to the alps next summer! - never even thought Snowdon could look like this, beautiful.
@@mykxl great place for alpine prep. It certainly can be beautiful too. Cheers.
all the other videos of people doing this in the summer they are crawling along shaking with fear. You just casually walk along the top on your own in the ice. very cool.
@@funny7 hi 😁 You might not believe me but it can be easier in these conditions, if you're wearing crampons, than on a wet day in the summer. Thanks for your comment 👍
This just encourages idiots to fall off what is an almost V.Diff climb
Great video, think this is beyond me though. Ive done all the other paths and your video has at least made me feel i have experienced this route. Im thinking of taking my 11 YO on the nantlle ridge , any advice appreciated. Your work is great by the way and ive subscribed.
@@philmcfadian4412 ah, that's really kind, thank you. Gutted that I have less time to film at the moment. The Nantlle ridge is an excellent route. In would suggest starting and finishing at the Rhyd Ddu railway station car park, heading as far as you like on the ridge and turning back when you're ready to. Otherwise you have to arrange transport back from the next valley if you go all the way. Happy to message more info directly. Cheers.
Thanks for replying, I may well message you next time we come. Currently that is April but watching your videos has made me feel I need to plan another trip before that. 😊

What an epic video
@@shaun2239 hey, thanks for that 👍
Nicely made vid. I used to do a bit of this when I was younger - I'm an armchair climber these days 🙂 but it does remind me how exhilarating it feels when you're on the mountain. Wales is a beautiful place. Thank you!
@@HeidiLandRover so glad to have transported you back there from your armchair 👊 One of the reasons I do this. Thank you.
The climbing itself looks quite easy. As an experienced climber I am confident I could do that. But the mental aspect is a whole different thing. I'm sure I could NOT handle that. Great video! Greetings from Germany
@@jondohnson8417 guten tag! It is an awesome route and I wish the climbing sections lasted longer. The moves are generally easy but there are risks and decision making is definitely important. I find that my mental approach is to have a wilder awareness of what is still ahead but quietly focussing on the moves in front of me. This can be really calming. Also, taking time, testing the rock, looking for other options in case I have to change direction and enjoying the moment 👍 Vielen dank.
Excellent video really we put together and explained.
@@glennbeasley1480 Cheers for that 👍
What's the best way to get to Dolmen from the top of Y Gribin after doing Cneifion Arete?
Second time I have watched this video, it is really enjoyable and informative. You made it look like a walk in the park, even if it is a challenging one! Given my level of experience, I have walked mainly on Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons, it is something I would think twice about in the summer without someone who hasn't done it before and I wouldn't even contemplate it in the winter.
@@WaylandJoe I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for letting me know. It really is excellent. Cheers.
Great route
With a bunch of friends we did that hike in 1993 mid winter, no visibility and howling wind. No crampons, no poles, just sheer bliss and ignorance! Great times.
also no common sense
Really Good description Thanks
@@MrTomo4415 great, have you been up?
Enough waffling, get scrambling.
@@Codzilla71 fair comment. Maybe enjoy my other route videos 👍

Wonderful, perfect, winter conditions with absolutely beautiful scenery and views. A great very enjoyable short film. Thanks for posting.
@@barrywebber100 really glad you enjoyed it. Thank you.
That's cinched it. Im buying an ice axe and crampons. Been scrambling a lot recently in North Wales and am anxious to experience the winter conditions there.
I respect and admire all your rock climbing viewers and your awesome videos. However, I simply couldn't do this as it scares me just watching - woh! that exposure dazzles me too much 😅 Thanks again.
Hi Paul. Really glad you enjoyed this. The main reason I make these is to share the experience with anyone who might not do it themselves, for whatever reason. Thanks for letting me know.
What an excellent and well produced guide! Thank you!!
Hey, thanks, Henry.
Just getting into scrambling with a mate. Trying to figure out what grade we're at and how to get better. I think we're at about grade 1, any tips on how to get better?
Hi. I'd say it's not a case of getting better, it's more a matter of gaining experience and confidence moving on steeper terrain. Much of scrambling well and safely is about good judgement, which comes with time on various routes. Through repetition you'll learn good body positioning, foot and hand placement and how to read a route. You can also book onto a scrambling course to learn some of these elements then get out and practice. Hope this helps.
Hi Paul I was wondering why do you carry the extra weight of a rope ! if it just you climbing! Who will be holding the other end?
Hi Steve. It's an insurance policy 😁 I sometimes prefer to carry a rope and some gear on a new route in the event that I need to back off and abseil. Also, never know if it might be handy to help someone else in difficulty. Not necessary, but a 'nice to have'.
Such an amazing day. I would love to see a montage with epic music in the background of your hike. It's stunning!
It was beautiful 👍
very nice. Have you climbed Howling Ridge on Carrantuohill in Co. Kerry, Ireland? It is a lovely grade 3/4 scramble. Similar in places.
No, I haven't climbed over there. I'll check it out. Thanks.
Overlay music just too loud relative to the speech. The route and scenery is all the noise you need. Extremely enjoyable otherwise. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback 👍 Glad you enjoyed it otherwise.

@@zohairalselawi4749 interesting questions. It is rhyolite, which is from volcanic ash. I used to live in the UAE, and saw some fantastic rock formations out there and many fossils.
Risky enough in the dry. But in the wet or in the snow it's extremely risky.
Well said… I’m heading to Tryfan this weekend and will be making a donation before I go 👍🏼
Have a great weekend.
Beautifully Done!! Mad respect. All the best from the States!!
Hey, thanks for that. Glad you enjoyed it. Greetings from Wales!
I'm looking to do this in Late May, coming from the US though. Know anywhere that would rent me gear? And/Or anyone who would be down to go?
Hi Ivan. There is a place on the river there called TNT Outdoors. Message them and they will shut you out. Enjoy and let me know how it goes 👊
Can you say what type of gear you had on your feet? I am an American, but I have a son studying over in Ireland. He hikes a lot and I am a little worried he will contemplate going over to Wales to hike this, probably not in Winter, but still. I have watched many of your videos and wonder at how you have developed a mind that trusts your feet and hands in situations with a great deal of exposure. I look forward to your future videos.
Hi. Thanks for letting me know you've enjoyed the videos and I hope I can get some more out this year. On scrambling routes like this, in anything other than winter conditions, I wear 'approach shoes' which are sturdy but have soft, sticky soles. I wear La Sportiva Boulder X or Scarpa Crux. You can also wear a light walking boot but they can be a little too flexible in the sole. In the Winter I wear a B2 graded boot like the La Sportiva Trango Tower. Happy to advise any time. Cheers.
@@BeyondTheTrail thank you!
Thank you! Amazing commentary and camera angles
Great! Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.
So great to see the horseshoe in superb conditions which magnifies the scale of the range. Easy to see why Tenzing, when accompanying Hilary and Charles Evans on a similar day asked where the camps were going to be on the traverse. Also it is a refreshing change to see a capable and knowledgeable mountaineer who fully appreciates the requirements both in capabilities as well as gear for these conditions. Lastly, it is great to hear the correct pronunciations of Crib Goch, Crib yr Ddysgl, Garnedd Ugain and Yr Wyddfa . Fideo ardderchog
Diolch am y galon. Although I'm not a Welshman, the Welsh language and the proper names of the mountains and places are important to me. Thank you for your kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Amazing to see that it inspired thoughts of our heroes 😁
@@BeyondTheTrail croeso 👍
Maybe I am just a clueless American, but from 5:18 on it appears as if you have switched from scrambling (class 4) to actual climbing (grade 5)? Tell me why I am wrong.
The biggest question in climbing grading. Again, I'm not sure about the US system but grade 3 scrambling often crosses over into the lower graded climbing grades of Moderate, Difficult and possibly Very Difficult. The difference is often whether the difficulties are brief or extended. The technical moves might be similar and a rope could certainly be used on a grade 3 scramble, but the climbing sections are likely to be over quite quickly with simple scrambling in between. Does this help? How does this translate to the US system?
@@BeyondTheTrail Thank you for your reply. Frankly I am not experienced or qualified to comment about the US system. Cheers.
We need this man to post more vidoes! This is awesome. I’ve done crib in the summer and planning to tackle it and CMD in the winter next season.

Hey. I reconised you on the ogwen mountain rescue show! Thanks for documenring so many great routes

@@BeyondTheTrail thanks! I look forward to them but no pressure!
What a beautiful day!
It was stunning.
Echo all comments about GREAT video quality! I was jelly legs enough to crawl along this ridge in two successive summers, a winter crossing like yours is unimaginable! Great demonstration that proper kit is required. I’ve used an ice axe only once - for a tarp descent of Mt St Helens in WA. USA!
Thanks, James. Glad you've been up as is brilliant. Certainly seen many people crawling or even bum sliding across! Cheers.
Thanks for being brave and showing me Snowdon's amazing scenery and views in the winter, but the slightly higher views I would not attempt never mind ever see. Heights are not my strong point and you did it in the winter!! wow😯

Absolutely loved this video. Great production quality. I've subbed! My first visit to CG I had to turn back just before the top of the ridge as rain and wind was brutal! Never seen weather turn so quickly. I've been itching to go back ever since but these videos will do for now :)

American 3rd class / 4th class for the less experienced . So might call it low 5th class
I think I need to read up on your class system! 😁
I understand the need for map/compass skills but almost everyone depends on their GPS these days.
Very true. I think a knowledge and skill in both is a good approach. Batteries fail and, on the other hand, maps fly away in the wind! I'd rather have both with me. This level of navigation is only really needed when conditions are challenging or night nav, but it is definitely worth practicing regularly to have confidence when the time comes. Thanks for your comment.
