Failed Attempt to Raise Emergency Cells
Hi All. Thought I would try to get a new nuc to raise an emergency cell or two, as I have another queenless nuc. the experiment failed, I think there were not enough bees in this nuc and a lot flew back to the parent hive. They did turn all the eggs into normal worker brood, but did not create any emergency cells. thought you maybe interested anyway!

    Once some of that brood emerges give them some more eggs, i find putting some frames into a nuc for a while, shaking in some extra bees from some other frames and allowing the flying bees to return to the donor hive is a good way of making a working nuc (Grafting, emergency queens, brood factories, whatever you want!)

      Thanks David. Yes, if I see a mated queen I use a crown of thorns cage and mark her. I don't have the confidence to pick them up but may try this, also I tend to use thicker gloves as I don't react well to stings! This does limit me somewhat. Look forward to a clip of yours sometime!

    I believe that the reason that they didn't feed the eggs is that that part of comb you placed there wasn't on the right direction. If the cells are not at the right direction they don't do anything to it. They cut the wax and rebuild it.

      Thanks David. Had a good look for a queen but could not see her, but perhaps I did miss her. I will check the frame in a few days to see if that gives an answer. Or perhaps the nuc is just a bit too small and now a bit old to be viable. Hope it's not too hot where you are today.

      @davidianoliver Місяць тому

      @@eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801 I did read that you really need a reasonable size hive to draw decent queen cells so I suppose the size of the nuc may be a contributing factor as you say. @eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801 3 місяці тому

      Thanks David. Yes, when the sun comes out they are so active, but seems to happen for only an hour or so a day. There is still lots of stores, but not so much fresh nectar/honey, but so much brood which will hatch very soon, so thought I would start early. Had it been really springlike probably would have done just a single frame, but as conditions not ideal thought I would give her a bit more brood and bees, hence the three. Ta for taking time to view and comment.
