Teaching as a Reflection: Owning the Ripple Effect of Our Actions
Teaching is, at its core, a mirror. When students are engaged, inspired, and thriving, it reflects positively on the teacher’s approach, preparation, and ability to connect. Conversely, when students are disengaged, disruptive, or struggling, this too often mirrors the teacher’s state-whether it’s a lack of preparation, a misstep in communication, or simply an off day. In my early career, student misbehaviour was often the result of a poorly executed lesson transition!
This reflective nature of teaching isn’t just a classroom principle-it’s a life principle, echoing through our relationships, parenting, and even how we engage with authority or navigate challenges.
During a conversation with Carolyn Mason-Parker, Head of KIS International School in Bangkok, we discuss this notion of teaching as a reflection of … which leads to the use of apologies!

Thank you so much! I cannot express how much I enjoyed listening to this chat. I ended up leaving classroom teaching, because common sense and the enthusiasm that it nurtures in a learning environment were constantly questioned because the choices and decisions made in the split second were not always in line with expectations set by those above me. Following the rules outweighed active, engaging learning where children were given ownership. Giving ownership sometimes means that children do not meet desired outcomes without a little rolercoater ride and fixing derailed projects, but it teaches them a little common sense too.

Granted invested viewers may engage with such a long, drawn out video and should their schedule allow for such an indulgence, more power to them. That said, the first 4'36" of this quashed any desire to listen further. With respect to the audience, we simply cannot waste time with waffle.

I really find this helpful, however in some schools you will find a lesson template and you are mandated to use it or else you will be signing warnings. The problem is that, after you are done completing the template, you have to go and search for notes, videos , set activities and this is very time consuming. In Africa specifically in Namibia, in a day I teach, Arts (grd. 5,7,9), Physical Education (grd.5 and 9), Natural science (grd.6-7) and English Second Language (grd.9). At the end of the you are stressed and you don't love what you do anymore.

Pray, allow me to express my thoughts on the matter at hand. It seems to me that if one were to pose a query that expects knowledge not previously imparted, then true education is not being imparted. The student-centered approach, whilst well-intentioned, may prove to be a hindrance for those without means to acquire further aid, such as private tutelage. It is a common occurrence to hear the young spoken to in a condescending manner. Furthermore, the reputation of institutions is severely damaged by such actions. Do not misunderstand me, I do not mean to suggest that there is something fundamentally flawed with the proposed approach. As a self-taught individual, I incorporate the student-centered approach into my daily life and can attest to being more resourceful in certain subjects, while acknowledging that others may have more opportunities. It is disheartening to acknowledge that many are not gaining any true education, but the decisions leading to this state of affairs are the result of a problem that cannot be rationally identified by a layman.

Explicit teaching is very important in giving right instructions to students at the right time. There is no question about that. That’s a sign of knowing your teaching subject area. But first we should try to get our students attention and focus to the work using different strategies. I think this is the part of student-centred teaching that requires recognising our students’ needs and wellbeing. Then explicit teaching should be followed by checking students’ understanding and giving students an individual feedback. Motivating them to take their own responsibility in learning is also part of student-centred teaching. So teaching is a mixture of using all main ingredients in a specific ratio. And as it was said, getting that engagement and vibe in the classroom are the most important aspects of teaching

HI Guys, I agree that there is wide variation in what is called explicit teaching. For me, it is where the students have an awareness (because it is made explicit) about what the nature is of their learning task, what is the aim of the learning task, and how they can demonstrate success or mastery of the aim. Some models interpret this as defaulting to rote or procedural learning and largely teacher modelled or directed. For me, I think that it can and should include explicit explanation like: "Today we are going to explore the need for conventions in the sketching of straight line graphs", Students can then engage in (directed) student-centred learning, to find characteristics of straight lines and coordinate geometry and set out on journeys which are quite open-ended. Again, as James says, the feedback for and from that learning (which includes collating and refining learnings) is an important part and is ideally explicit, i.e. students can explain what they have learned. James also gave me a significant idea, that of making explicit what is the new learning (because it is not all take-aways). I frequently like to identify information or methodology which is new and advise students that this might take time (and practice) to settle in their Mathematical world-view.

That's a helpful illumination Bill. Very helpful. That all makes sense. I still suspect, however, that many assume explicit teaching to imply teacher-centred, procedurally-based teaching. Cheers for your input Bill.

Good points Bill... I'm starting think some educational authorities like to use "explicit" as a euphemism for "good", because good is too general, then they can point to research that supports explicit teaching and issue directives to improve teacher performance in a pseudo-objective fashion. Unfortunately, as you say, this is often interpreted as a teacher-directed modelling of procedures.

@@jameskiely833 as we've suggested James, I do think many teachers and education 'experts' have insufficient experience with student-centred approaches that work ie the value of a highly-structured student-centred approach that also allows for true explicit teaching.

my workaround would be to type area(c) into the algebra view or circumference(c) into the algebra view and then you choose whichever variable it assigns for that. I haven't used this dynamic stuff before but once I knew where it was your problem in the video isn't difficult. You seem to have area, circumference and radius squared muddled in this video. I hate the saving system they have for geogebra. Back in version 4 the program worked so well, version 5 is OK version 6 I only use because my students will use it by default.
