Yeah, hard to argue this is not the greatest along with Heifetz, Ferras, Hirshorn and Neveu. Just listen to the endless opening B flat, it is pure magic, hypnotically beautiful and perfectly complemented by the LSO and Sir Charles. Bravo, Mr. Zukerman, truly the last of the giants still performing at an incredibly high level.

A long time idle! No one can top the Zukerman tone. A vibrato that shines consistent and superbly controlled in all of his performances. He seems to be the only Violinist who understands the true acoustics of sound, how sound and sound travel are related to speed and tone quality. A true Violin genius.!!

Really interesting recording! He really takes his time and care with the 1st movement, at times it has a lot the character of the second and the recording sizzle makes it sound all the more nostalgic! Yet it’s clear he is unafraid of changing gears when the momentum takes him there. I’ll be honest I initially didn’t like this recording all that much due to how much slower the lyrical sections are compared to other recordings, but now it might be favorite alongside Perlman’s, due to how much it made me pay attention to the beautiful melodies!

I have listened to a great number of recordings of this work, but I never heard a more musical and subtle performance. His range of expression goes from the most tender to wildly passionate, yet he remains always in best taste and idiomatic slavonic style. His performance shows real understanding. It reveals the work as the masterpiece it is, which many others fail in their interpretation to do. Out of the many famous Ilona Pheher's students, Ashkenasi is by far my favourite violinist!
