I have listened to a great number of recordings of this work, but I never heard a more musical and subtle performance. His range of expression goes from the most tender to wildly passionate, yet he remains always in best taste and idiomatic slavonic style. His performance shows real understanding. It reveals the work as the masterpiece it is, which many others fail in their interpretation to do. Out of the many famous Ilona Pheher's students, Ashkenasi is by far my favourite violinist!

No, Neil...the greatest recording of this piece is by HEIFETZ, of course. If this recording inspired you to become a violinist, listening to Heifetz should inspire you to become a better violinist! And be sure to listen carefully to the ending, where Heifetz gives a CLINIC on how many ways to play a repeating note! He was/is AMAZING.

Thanks so much for posting this. Phenomenal playing, though I'm curious to know what happens at around 11.25? It sounds like a string snaps? And he valiantly tries to continue until a suitable moment to swap instrument with the leader for the last few pages rather than stop the performance? Do you know who the conductor and orchestra are?

I wish I could have heard him live. This is a beautiful and expressive version of one of my favourite concertos. Although technically superb, the stars of today lack the romantic qualities of this generation of performers...... maybe it's the age of the recording and nostalgia .... there's a saying "distance lends enchantment".
