Polygons are very often rendered are multiple triangles internally.
Recording this video was a disaster. I made the same mistake as I did last week where I forgot to push “unpause.” Plus I tilted my head for some reason for the sculpture reveal. Don’t forget that I’m sculpting whatever you guys comment. And maybe next time I will record it properly. :)
GPUs can only deal with triangles. So no matter if you use n-gons, quads, or triangles, it all ends up being triangles fed to the GPU. Quads are simply an abstraction on top of triangles that makes modeling easier and that many tools require in order to work: subdivision, edge loop creation, etc. This abstraction isn't generally kept by game engines because by the time the model is in the game, it is not going to be manipulated by humans anymore and as a result it makes no sense to keep quad/n-gon information around. Imported models are either manually or automatically triangulated and the quad/n-gon information discarded.

It's realy suspicious that the word "coplanar" isn't mentioned in this video, not even once.
Triangulation ensures that a model is compatible with GPU rendering by converting quads into triangles. simple as.
because quads are a lie and only exist for ease of editing, easy next question
I've recently started to study old low poly game assets and they really use a lot of triangles purposefully. Those I've looked at came triangulated but you can usally deduce the geometry that was started with quad based topology and where it goes into triangle topology for optimization/poly count reasons. A typical pattern seems to be the 'W' where it goes from one edge to two via three triangles. I also love how crude some of the old textures are but still work just fine in context.

Yes, I only used references from Godzilla: Minus One. Tooooootally not because that's my favorite Godzilla movie and I have a bias. Why would you think that? ;) Anyway, don't forget that you can comment a character and I will sculpt it in the future. Anything your heart desires. Another giant monster perhaps?

GPU's are programmed to handle triangles. Any kind of graphics program physically can't render anything without triangles.

Hey Magic, this is one of your best VR sculpt-and-chats! Enjoyed it very much. Hands ARE hard to draw/sculpt. But you, you make it look so, well, easy... HANDS DOWN!
you can render half the head and program it to copy the other half. since eyes move together you only need 1 eye.
On google drive if you share the file to everyone who has the link as viewers they wont be able to see your email, it will show up as a pop up that you could ask the owner to invite people, and im not exactly sure but im pretty sure it doesnt show your email. If you still arent confident, you can create a new email you dont worry about getting leaked, or use stuff like dropbox or mediafire.
i was going to say quad based topology leads to better rigging and mesh deformation but if mario can bing bang wahoo with tris its good enough for me

Your video is spot on! 4:40 - The reason by math is done to triangles not quads is due to transformations in 3d space. If you had extensive math lessons is school, you might have remember "matrixes" and operations on them. They are very efficient and fast to do ( * / + - ) on them... AND THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING BY MATH when you moving in 3d space! "zooming" "panning" "rotating" -> behind the scene is "get me this verticle and multiply by this matrix"! Based on that HARDWARE was designed that way to be the most efficient on triangles (memory/access) and its gonna stay like that. There are other bits like points of collisions in 3d space, or calculating normals, etc.. Where math is very fast to do. so its performance in a nutshell. To make it in plain english.. for you HUMAN :) its easier to do: 123 + 123 then 123 * 123 ;) same for machine.. triangles are faster ;)
by the way... for GPU its actually faster to do MULTIPLY then ADD :), it requires assembler knowledge to understand processor commands but I'm sure you will find some videos / articles that explain that paradigm in details ;)

All the tips said here are genuinely good advice, drawing everyday actually goes a very long way. Sometime back in august I told myself that I'd draw everyday for a week and it actually made my art improve a lot, just from that one week! I don't really know what else to say in terms of art tips but maybee you could sculpt Spearmaster from Rain World? Love that game with all my heart lol
Nice Video short and to the point ! i think that your tips are great. my honest opinion is why most people dont improve is because they dont do it regurarly, dont have a strong reason to do it and dont chsllenge themselves. putting in some hours into your craft is the biggest thing you can do. if you put this to the extreme, for example 8 hours a day you already get 2920 hours in just one year. I guarantee you that you will drastically improve in that year. PS: start with something smaller like 30 minutes or 1 hour and slowly build up.
