Hello, I worked on this unit as an electronics apprentice in the late 60's. Bear in mind that I was in a lowly position in the department, but I did work on it and remember it well. Don't quote me too much on this but it was an update of a previous model, and the idea was to make it more up to date rather than a significant improvement in terms of circuit design and specification. In part of the workshop there was a screened room which was basically an area about 8 ft by 12 ft made of a fine chicken mesh where test work was done. The guys doing the 'rf' and 'if' work were of the opinion that the receiver could have been better and one of them thought his homegrown unit had a better performance. Anyway my task was to look into the screening of the digital display which was absolutely cutting edge in late 60's. It was early days in the understanding of the amount of interference created by sharp edges of logic gates and so on. Obviously it was not an ideal place to have an 'rf' generator embedded in an extremely sensitive receiver!! Metal boxes and extensive decoupling on the supply wires seemed to do the trick. Perhaps you can tell me if it was a problem when they were sold and used in real situations. Raymond Peto

Hello and thanks for the videos. I've been lucky enough to be offered one of these magnificent receivers and should take delivery within a month. Unsure if it will arrive with manuals, so I have a question for you please. The Marconi Apollo is reported to be programable. It's too early to have on-board memory so is it programable with crystals, trimer capacitors or some other method?

So well presented. I remember training on this all those years ago in Southampton, before East Ham and then across the seas. G4CTG

Hello friend, very good your videos about Marconi Apollo, I have one also that works well in some bands and in others it is passable, after much investigating, dismantling everything and cleaning the wave switches I found that the ferrite cores of some input filter coils were loose and went out of adjustment with the vibration of transport, I have the REF 50/1, 2 and 4 manuals but none of them mention the alignment routine, I imagine there must be a number 3 where they have this information, for Can you tell me where I can get this? By the way, I have empirically aligned and the reception has already improved a lot. 73! PU3WWV.

What a beautiful set. I’ve got an Apollo myself, but it doesn’t work and I haven’t had the opportunity of going through it yet. I hope you will tell us in a future video the story of your 3 Apollos, as it has got to be an interesting one I’m sure! 73 de Fernando TL/EA4BB
