      Hi Luttibelle, yes that’s correct. When you add the sodium silicate to the slip it congeals very quickly. But you can add more slip to get the consistency that you are looking for. Cheers 💕

      Hi, hopefully Google translate has done justice here. Your question is if there is a way to do this technique without an electric wheel. -- if you have a manual turntable, you could give that a go. But it would definitely be easier with an electric one! Hope this helps. Apologies for the delay in responding too!

    Do your cups get hot? The tea cups I throw get too hot if you pour hot water in them and you can't hold them... I'm wondering if there's a solution, but I can't seem to find anything.

    • @twistsoflifeceramics4295
      @twistsoflifeceramics4295 2 роки тому

      Hi Joshua, yes mine gets hot too but no more than the ones that you buy from the big homeware stores. If yours are hotter than the store ones, maybe try doing them slightly thicker and see how that goes. Else you could try a double walled cup, and see (never tried that one myself but would be curious to find out too 😃)!!!

      A good idea might be to get your hand on a good hand made tea cup and feel the thickness. I had not been taking into account the shrinking for my pieces.

    I do slip with Sodium silicate. Easy process. You just apply sodium silicate over the slip and Expand clay bowl (inside out) at same time apply heat. The slip will crack. Done.

    • @twistsoflifeceramics4295
      @twistsoflifeceramics4295 2 роки тому

      Hi Mia, indeed it’s an easy process 😃. You just end up with a different finish/look depending on the application. So I guess it comes down to the look that you are going for 😁

    Did I miss something? What slip? How do you make the black slip and silicate mixture? I watched this video three times and did not see how you achieved the black slip that you added to make the texture.???

    • @twistsoflifeceramics4295
      @twistsoflifeceramics4295 2 роки тому

      Hi there, I don’t think I showed how the mixture was made in this video. I only showed applying the mixture, shaping the pot and the resulting cracks that it creates. If you are interested in making the mixture, make a thickish slip (cake batter consistency) and add some silicate to it - add a little by little for your desired consistency. If it’s too thick you can just add some more slip to it. Hope this helps…😀

I threw in high school and everybody said that I was a natural at it I don't remember that I was that good but it came back to me really fast it took me about 2 hours to remember how to center and I was Off to the races. It's the love of my life I'm badly disabled so it's the only thing I really can do anymore. You have very beautiful hands they're made for pottery you are very good. Right now I'm concentrated on making lots of teapots I'm going to sell them I think although I never want to sell anything that I make because I enjoy looking at them so much

    Hi I am an artist and trying to make my own texture that can give me cracks. Can tile adhesive be mixed with sodium silicate in order to get cracks. Would be very grateful for all replies.

    • @twistsoflifeceramics4295
      @twistsoflifeceramics4295 2 роки тому

      Hi Vera, my apologies for the very late response! I’ve recently relocated to another country and haven’t spent much time on my channel. When you mix the sodium silicate to the clay, you have to stretch out the pot to form the cracks. If you will be able to stretch out the piece that you will put this on, I do not see why you would not be able to mix with tile adhesive to obtain similar results.

    What kind of clay did you use?

    • @twistsoflifeceramics4295
      @twistsoflifeceramics4295 3 роки тому

      Hi Tywanna, I’ve used a black clay for these (I can’t remember the same but it was from a company in The UK) but it’s high in manganese content which I didn’t know at the time I bought it, so it’s okay to use for decorative pieces but not good for functional ware.

    • @twistsoflifeceramics4295
      @twistsoflifeceramics4295 3 роки тому

      Thank you. Unfortunately I do not measure. Add a little bit at a time. You will see that the consistency of your slip will change straight away. So if you want the slip to be thicker add more sodium silicate and vice versa.

    Great video, I wish I had found it a couple of months ago, because I had just made a straight-sided bowl. However, I had trouble with it warping during the glaze firing. Any suggestions? Do you have another video where you bisque and glaze fire the bowl from this video? My bowl is 8 1/2" dia x 4 1/2" tall. I used 5 1/2 lbs. of clay (was that too much?).

    • @twistsoflifeceramics4295
      @twistsoflifeceramics4295 3 роки тому

      Hi Denise, My apologies for the late response - I just saw your message. Thank you - I'm glad you have found it helpful :) Which part of the bowl warped? This info would help as there are various causes for warping. I normally throw my bowls on a bat. I use the speedball bats and I do not wire the piece. I let it dry on the bat in a dry room/box. Once it has dried enough, the piece will pop off the bat on its own and I trim it as needed. Perhaps give that a go and see if that solves the problem for you :) Unfortunately, I do not have a video for the bisque and the glazing. However, on my Instagram/Facebook pages, I have a post on how this piece looked when it was completed. The post link for this particular bowl is in the comment pinned at the top or in the description box of this video. This bowl measured D: 19.5 cm, H: 4.9 cm after it was fired and I had used about 3.5 lbs of clay for it. Since you have used more clay, it sounds right that the size of your bowl would be bigger. Thicker pieces actually help in reducing warping so unless the walls were uneven, I don't think this would have caused the warping issue. I hope this helped in some way. If you have any other questions, just reach out :) Regards Kalia

      @msjonesd1977 3 роки тому

      @@twistsoflifeceramics4295 Thanks for responding. The warping seems to happen during the glaze firing. Everything was fine up until that point. I used coils to allow air to circulate. I have an old (1970s era) L&L kiln with manual kiln sitter. Could too much air be coming through the peep holes? I've looked around online, some help, but nothing really applies to my circumstance, yours was the closest, that was why I wanted to know a little about your firing process, bisque and glaze. Anything else that you could share would be appreciated.
